Your mother wants you to look at these shots of Viggo Mortensen as Sigmund Freud

Jul. 6, 2010by: Paul Tassi

David Cronenberg's great cinematic love affair with Viggo Mortensen continues in the upcoming A DANGEROUS METHOD. When you first hear that title, you might think he’s returning Viggo to a world of ultraviolence as in A HISTORY OF VIOLENCE and EASTERN PROMISES, where he was a gangster killing gangsters left and right in the most brutal ways possible.

But not so, METHOD is the story of the relationship between Carl Jung and Sigmund Freued, and how it spawned the practice psychoanalysis. Mortensen is Freud and Michael Fassbender is Jung, with Keira Knightley thrown into the mix for good measure,

These are the first shots from the set below, and they show the two leads in costume. The strip above shows you just how much they look like the actual historical figures they're portraying, and as this is Cronenberg, who seldom does wrong, this should be a film we’re all eagerly anticipating.

Click on the pictures below to see more from the set over at Kinogallery.

Extra Tidbit: I'm still not sure if this is called A DANGEROUS METHOD or THE TALKING CURE these days, but I'm going with IMDB.

Mortensen and Cronenberg make nothing but awesome movies together, I'll be seeing A Dangerous Method in theaters.

Damn, Fassbender looks a lot like Jung when he's done up like that. And Viggo is definitely a solid character actor for a role like this. I can't just read about a movie like this and think about how Cronenberg is going to add his own bit of flair to the project.

While I still wish I could see Christoph Waltz as Freud, I'm pretty impressed here. Though, I must admit Fassbender is the closer comparison.

Viggo can do no wrong as far as I'm concerned, so this one's definitely on my radar.

Looks freakin' good!

I like Mortensen, Fassbender and Cronenberg, so I'm all over this film like a fat man on a sandwich. And yes, I thought both A History of Violence and Eastern Promises were fucking amazing.

I smell an Oscar.

Funny how everyone in Hollywood covets such a phallic trophy, hmmm.

Wow.

They both look excellent, especially Fassbender. Still a bit bitter that Christoph Waltz left the project, but Mortensen is a more than capable replacement.

I actually agree with u. When it came out, it got all this praise and the trailer was cool so I checked it out and it was a terrible film.. Boring and stupid, with no point to it..

Good Lord . . .

... save money on contacts and prosthetics and cast Billy Bob Thornton. Just kidding. Cronenberg and Viggo get my money any day.

They do certainly look the part. I'm over my distaste for History of Violence now, so I can get with the Viggo/Cronenberg mix again.

Funny article title, if you've studied Psych/Freud lol.

Looks like we're led to believe they've done a great job on the appearances/costumes so far.

Gum and cigarettes -- Wonder what Freud would say about Jung's apparent oral fixation?

Freud always had a cigar in his mouth, wonder what he would think about his own oral fixation.

I'll see this, I enjoy Mortensen a lot and he could pull in a good performance as Freud. I've always been fascinated with Jung and Freud.
