Your next comic book adaptation is...Afterlife with Archie! Betty! Veronica! Zombies!

06.06.2013

Well, it may not be the comic book adaptation you've been waiting for, but it's certainly the most unexpected. Warner Bros. has closed the deal to adapt the long-running comic Archie into a live-action movie. The catch? It's Archie vs. Zombies. Based on the series by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the comic follows Archie and the gang, while living in a zombie apocalypse of suburban New York. Director Jason Moore (PITCH PERFECT) has been hired to direct the pic, which seems rather fitting. There aren't many details in terms of the film adaptation other than that, but the comic series was born of the idea of "genre mixing," based on conversations Aguirre-Sacasa had with Archie creator/publisher John L. Goldwater.

"‘What if the Archie characters found themselves in a Stephen King novel like The Stand or a Sam Raimi movie like The Evil Dead? Could we pull that off, tonally? We’re really going for it. The first arc is called ‘Escape from Riverdale’. The second arc is called, brace yourself, ‘Betty RIP’.”

Aguirre-Sacasa says "the gore will be balanced with “elements that are quintessentially Archie." No word on a release date or casting, as this is still developing, but expect all those details to fill in quickly. It all sounds very SHAUN OF THE DEAD to me, but who knows, it could work. Along with this and the slowly moving adaptation of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE AND ZOMBIES, it seems like the genre is getting a little out of control.

What do you think? Is the world ready for Archie and Zombies?

Wadafuq?!

Lol... This. Is. Awesome! I am totally digging this. I read the comics, well the digests that you get at grocery stores, in elementary school, and practically got my whole class hooked on them. They are fun reads. This would be awesome if this is stylized like the olden days, something like the movie Pleasentville, but with a bit of modern touches. I really do see this working if done right.

I don't read Archie but I know from trips to my local comic shop the franchise still has plenty of loyal fans and this will likely tick them off. Why not just do a traditional Archie movie? This is for Archie fans what it would be like if a Marvel Zombies movie was made instead of The Avengers. This is a Warner Bros. production, which backs up theories that they don't know what the heck to do with comic book properties except for Superman and Batman.

I think this sounds awesome!

I used to read Archie comic books in the crapper because my dad had a huge collection. This could be really good if the right mix of horror, camp, and comedy are blended!

April 1st was over 2 months ago right?????

Did I somehow time travel? Its June 6th not April 1st right???? This is such a terrible idea, seems more like a direct to web series or something. I just don't see genre fans getting excited for this, zombies or not. I think the people that are fans of Archie would rather just have a good Archie movie.

Wuh - that was out of left field. While it sounds like fun, I think a proper attempt at a live-action Archie adaptation might have been the way to go first. This sounds like it could be alienating to a decent chunk of the audience (and prospective financiers) and the kind of thing that might get very easily stuck in development hell.
