Steve Martin! And...

Alec Baldwin!

That's right -- in the best "two for the price of one" deal since the last sale at RealDoll, the Acadamy Awards will bring both wry actors together for a big plate of comic chops at the 82nd ceremony in March.

Martin returns for his third time handing out snark and statues, while his IT'S COMPLICATED co-star jumps up there for the first time (except for presenting). It also marks the first hosting duet in over 50 years (Jerry Lewis and Celeste Holm were the last pairing, in 1957).

While we already knew last year's host Hugh Jackman wouldn't be back (which is a shame, the guy's a hell of an entertaininer), the creative team is also getting swapped out. The show will now be produced by Bill Mechanic (former Fox honcho) and filmmaker Adam Shankman, who directed Martin in BRINGING DOWN THE HOUSE and CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN 2. Let's hope that's not indicative of the show's entertainment value.

Looks to me like an early promotion for IT'S COMPLICATED. As for Shankman, he's an acclaimed former choreographer who also directed 2007's HAIRSPRAY, the man should do a more than satisfactory job producing the Oscars.

I've heard some people say they think this is to help promote their movie, It's Complicated. Except there is a major flaw with this theory. The movie opens in December while the oscars themselves won't be until late February, two whole months later. The movie will be gone by for sure by then.

DANG
I was hoping the host would be Chris Rock.

Billy Crystal would've been the top of my list too, still nice to see Martin back in the game.

Wow, was not expecting that. It's an interesting twist, let's hope it plays out well.

Also, agreed with the better writers comment earlier. I couldn't stand last year's "and now we come to *insert award here*, where at this stage in production, the magic happens because *insert job here* does this, come on, we'll hold your hand and explain it to you!"

I may be in the minority, but while Martin is a helluva comedic talent, I never warmed to his hosting gigs. Sharing the stage with Baldwin oughta temper some of his more annoying antics. And speaking of Baldwin, what a comeback this guy has made lately.
