Youth in Revolt trailer

08.21.2009

Michael Cera's filmography is filled with fidgety characters and quests to get laid, and YOUTH IN REVOLT doesn't seem to be very different... and then it definitely does, as you'll see below.

In the movie, Cera plays trailer-park teen Nick Twisp trying to win the heart (and other biological components) of the lovely Sheeri Saunders, which leads to an escalating series of misadventures. The adaptation of C.D Payne's books is directed by Miguel Arteta (THE GOOD GIRL) and also features Steve Buscemi, Jean Smart, Ray Liotta, Justin Long, Fred Willard and the suddenly omnipresent Zack Galifianakis.

I don't know

As a huge fan of the book, this trailer makes me uncertain about how good the film will be. The trailer makes Nick look like a wuss in the movie, however in the book he was a confident and devious smartass.

Cera

Looks okay. However, it seems strange that Cera does not seem to be ageing. Anyone else notice that?

Fight Club: The Prequel? This seems like a teen comedy version of Fight Club, except without the underground fighting. I give it a "meh".

Are you suggesting that any movie where a person creates another opposite personality is somehow related to Fight Club? First of all, Fight Club was not the first book or movie to do this. Second, in that movie, the first person did not know about the second personality. In this, the lead character deliberately created the second personality. Third, there is no insomnia, no secret fight group, no terrorist organization, no support groups, none of Chuck Paluhniak's dark sense of humor. So,

So, what exactly makes either of these stories similar?

I repeat, multiple personalities is not an invention of Fight Club. The comparison really doesn't work at all (and we know from the beginning that another personality exists, as opposed to a later reveal in Fight Club).

I CAN'T WAIT

I've been waiting for this movie, based on the novel of the same name by C.D. Payne, for just about 10 years. I'm not happy that it's incredibly changed from the book, nor am I happy that it stars the worthless Michael Cera, but I can't help but be completely excited for this film.

Also - the trailer does not do the script justice. It does make it look a lot like Me, Myself, and Irene, but the plot of the movie/script is not focused on Nick Twisp becoming Francois, that's just an aside from

I wonder if Francois will get typecast...

All funnies aside, I'll give it a chance. Cera hasn't grated my nerves too much yet, and I have to watch all Galifianakis movies.

My biggest trouble here is he's not exactly succeeding with the alter-ego, but looks entertaining nonetheless. Gotta say, some of the monotone in this makes me appreciate even more his work in other movies.

And why isn't Buscemi in this trailer, used to be a contractual obligation to use him in marketing for every movie he had a cameo in.

I dunno about you guys...

...but I'm digging this. If Michael Cera's shtick is getting old, then I must be getting old with it, because I still find his awkward charm to be damn funny. That "thanks for breakfast" part was great.
