Yup, Valentine's Day gets sequel

Feb. 8, 2010by: Mike Sampson

VALENTINE'S DAY doesn't even hit theaters until this Friday but Warner Bros. based New Line is already moving ahead on a sequel. Yes, a sequel. YES. A SEQUEL. Director Garry Marshall will return to direct NEW YEAR'S EVE, a spinoff-type sequel that will feature many of the same characters from VALENTINE'S DAY as they spend the night celebrating New Year's Eve in New York City.

Feel free to take as much time as you need to get your bearings together and I'll be waiting for you in the third paragraph.

Better? Good. So the current plan is to begin filming on NEW YEAR'S EVE later this year with a November/December release in 2011 planned. It's unclear which of the actors will be available/interested in returning for this new film but that any of them could should be a giant spoiler alert (hey, I was holding out hope they all died at the end of the first film).

If this film is a big success (and I have no reason to believe it won't be), what other holidays could be turned into movies? THE FOURTH OF JULY? ST. PATRICK'S DAY?

Extra Tidbit: Citing the lack of any kind of human dimension in VALENTINE'S DAY, New Line has decided to shoot NEW YEAR'S EVE in 0-D.

Barf...

I have no reason to believe this movie will be any good... it's a great idea, but Ashton Kutcher is a major presence here so I question the filmmakers judgement (unless they want to show us how douche-bags celebrate Valentine's Day... I guess we'll see). Anyway... I wasted 5 seconds typing this.

Why? Who is in charge of greenlighting these ideas? In a bad economy, I feel like anybody can qualify for this job now. When will they stop? The twist should be they all get drugged at their respective parties and wake up either pregnant, with AIDS, or just dead. Nobody will see it coming especially with Black Eyed Peas in the trailer again.

The only film with 'Valentine' in the title that I want to see a sequel to is 'My Bloody Valentine'. Come on, you Hollywood asshats, give Harry Warden his own series at long last, dammit.

Seriously, though, how much did it cost to simply pay all the talent in this movie? There's so many "A-list" actors in this that their salaries alone had to have put this film's budget close to 80 million.

Movies with ensemble casts like these have it in their contracts that the actors have to take significantly less than normal.

Most of these actors probably had only 2 or 3 week shooting schedules. I don't think any studio would stand for someone like Jeniffer Garner getting her usual pay for 15 days of work.

I just hope it is not one of those "we had a great cast but the movie itself sucked." Sometimes too much A-list cast can be a bad thing. We'll see.

And lets call it Mother's Day

...Natural consequence after all the unprotected humping on V-Day. When you have so huge an ensemble cast, one cannot expect any kind of character development. Its just a way to make a quick buck on the first week, before word of mouth catches up...

Valentine's Day is getting trashy reviews as it is already, why bother making another bad attempt? Garry Marshall your days have been over since Pretty Woman.

Remember when you first saw the sinister six in spiderman as a kid, and you were like "wow, if 1 villian is cool 6 must be beyond awesome!" And then you realize that it was just cluster#*%4 with no real coherent story. That is what this movie reminds me of.

Wait. I understand the brains behind this operation now... Warner Bros. will dominate the Valentine's Day weekend EVERY year just like Saw dominates every Halloween weekend.
