Zach Braff joins the Kickstarter movement to fund his feature Wish I Was Here

Apr. 24, 2013by: Paul Shirey

I've got a love/hate feeling toward crowdfunding, which stems from the recent VERONICA MARS movie being funded when the studio easily could've footed the bill. I feel that places like Kickstarter are best served to the independent filmmakers who want to make a film outside of the studio system and don't have the Hollywood resources to do so. Now, my views are being challenged, as Zach Braff of Scrubs and GARDEN STATE fame, has taken to the venue to fund his sophomore effort, I WISH I WAS HERE.

I am a Zach Braff fan. Plain and simple. I've seen every episode of Scrubs and I love the quirky, offbeat GARDEN STATE to this day. In short, Braff is a talented guy and the one major thing that makes me feel differently about his Kickstarter effort is that it's not backed, mandated, or in any way studio controlled. This is Braff trying to make his second feature off the Hollywood leash and I respect the hell out of that.

I WISH I WAS HERE is written by Braff and his brother, Adam, and sounds like a fun, imaginitive indie flick that fits squarely within the actor/director's sensibilities.

Here's Zach (and friends):

Here's the story:

"Wish I Was Here" is the story of Aidan Bloom (played by me), a struggling actor, father and husband, who at 35 is still trying to find his identity; a purpose for his life. He and his wife are barely getting by financially and Aidan passes his time by fantasizing about being the great futuristic Space-Knight he'd always dreamed he'd be as a little kid.

When his ailing father can no longer afford to pay for private school for his two kids (ages 5 and 12) and the only available public school is on its last legs, Aidan reluctantly agrees to attempt to home-school them.

The result is some funny chaos, until Aidan decides to scrap the traditional academic curriculum and come up with his own. Through teaching them about life his way, Aidan gradually discovers some of the parts of himself he couldn't find.

So, if you're a fan of Braff's, a fan of the premise, or want to support a more expensive indie pic, then check out his Kickstarter page and pledge a few bucks. Just like VERONICA MARS, the beauty of it all is that it's up to you, like it or not. Now, for some jiggly ball...

Extra Tidbit: The Last Kiss is one of my favorite indie dramas, which starred Braff, Rachel Bilson, and Casey Affleck. Good show, all around. Give it a watch if you've never seen it.

On the one hand, I'm sure as Hell not coughing up money to somebody who is worth me x 20 million. But if other people want to give him money to make a movie, that's their decision. Nobody is forcing anybody to drop the dough. You have to pull that trigger yourself. That's my two cents... which will be staying in my wallet.

It's not like people aren't getting anything out of it. There are rewards being offered in exchange for a contribution. It's a great way to get a movie funded, and it's a marketing move. You get people excited and invested in a film that doesn't even exist. It's brilliant! People can hate this all they want, but I don't see a problem with it.

Why the hate for a legitimate Indie?

When Veronica Mars gets lauded, and that one was actually backed by a corporation?
Go fuck yourselves.
What about David Fincher's Kickstarter for The Goon?
Or Ralph Bakshi's Kickstarter?
Seriously - yourself, go fuck it.

I don't get all the hate crowdfunding gets from some people. After all, it's not like they're asking for your money and give you nothing in return. You're basically paying for what you're getting, and helping a movie get made in the process. I really see nothing wrong with that.

I paid $40 and got a t-shirt, the pdf screenplay, an online screening of the movie, and a link for the soundtrack.
Outside of Kickstarter, just the t-shirt of a studio movie costs $40.

I loved Garden State and The Last Kiss was pretty good. I hope this works but I would never spend my money on it. But that being said I don't know why people get so angry about it, some people have the money to spend and want to support and feel like they're a part of something that could be great.

Yeah, because middle-class "fans" should really be the folks who finance movies for rich millionaire stars and billionaire corporations. This is disgusting...

from the Garden State

Without sounding like too much a that fanboy Braff parodied on SNL, Garden State is one of the most influential movies i've ever seen. Its changed how i look at movies and life. Granted it came at a time when i was still young and searching for myself. But it came at the right time and still holds up.

Scrubs is also so good i can watch it over and over. I'm don't care too much for the kickstarter thing, but i may help on this one because i would love to see another Garden State and maybe a

Oh my fucking god, I am tired of fucking millionaires asking for fucking money! You want to be a filmmaker? Then follow in Robert Rodriguez's footsteps and use your own damn money.

Zach Braff's net worth is $22 million dollars [1]... On top of that, he showed it to 2 producers who financed Pulp Fiction and Django, who wanted final say. It makes me wonder the quality of the script if he's going around them on final cut.

I hate this man

Damnet, there always has to be some bad with the good. I love the concept for wish I was here, it sounds like a really interesting film.

However, I hate Zach Braff, ever since scrubs anwhen he played that awful, retarded, piece of shit character John Dorian. I hated his quirkiness, I hated his jokes, I hated how he was the main character, I hated his narration, I hated his dumb cut scenes, but to his credit I did tune into the show, hoping and praying that Dr. Cox, The Janitor, Elliot, or

As for rich people using kickstarter to fund their passion projects, couldn't have said it better ICEMAN1607. Guess everyone even the rich are looking for handouts now a days.
