Zach Galifianakis isn't being funny in the It's Kind of a Funny Story trailer

07.14.2010

Zach Galifiankis has done his fair share of work in dramatic films. But that was before THE HANGOVER. Now that he's a big comedy star, his performance in IT'S KIND OF A FUNNY STORY is being used as a key part of the promotion of the film. Except despite its title, FUNNY STORY isn't much of a funny story. It's about a teen who's somewhat misdiagnosed and sent to the mental ward of a hospital. The juvenile area is being renovated so he's placed with the adult patients and coming-of-age ensues.

Galifianakis plays an adult patient who befriends our protagonist and helps him along his way to realizing maybe he's not crazy. The new trailer for the film is online and it certainly plays up the Zach-ness of the film but to what degree? Will audiences be disappointed they don't get a madcap comedy? Will they be surprisingly charmed? I wasn't necessarily won over by this trailer but I do have faith in directors Anna Boden, Ryan Fleck (HALF NELSON). Take a look at the trailer below and let me know what you think.

Extra Tidbit: The trailer for Galifiankis' latest comedy, DUE DATE, will be online later this week.

I think it looks kinda cool. It reminds me of Funny People in the sense that it was subtle and hilariously funny but yet serious at the same time because Sandler was a dying man who felt as if he had done nothing in his life. Off topic, Zach looks like he's going to be funny as hell in Dinner for Schmucks along with the lady talking to the lobster in the commercial.

I had no idea about this movie until now. I really want to see actually. The trailer didn't reveal everything and looks like it will be funny yet still have some heart

Anybody notice the girl in the trailer was Depp's little girl in "Blow"?

That looks awesome. I got a (500) Days of Summer vibe, which can never be a bad thing.

errr

has anyone else noticed Jeremy Davies seems to be wearing that hat all the time recently? He wore it in the purgatory scenes in Lost, i've seen him wearing it in real life at promotional functions and now [link]

film looks alright anyway.

Looks great! Also loved the bit of Broken Social Scene music in the trailer, who did the soundtrack for Fleck's Half Nelson.

Got to disagree

I really liked this trailer. This seems like a very likable movie, with Galafiniakis actually toning in a good performance. Though he is in a mental institution, ironically this might be his most stable character yet.

This looks like it could be good. I'm curious to see what kind of range Zack Galafiniakis has, and this looks like it could show a fairly good balance between his comedic and dramatic side. Not so convinced on the lead though. He doesn't entice me to see this much.

looks a little too

feel good and contrived. If you haven't seen enough of those, then another one won't hurt. I've had my share already. At least its not Patch Adams.

That was Aasif Mandvi I saw, right? I didn't even hear him say a word, and I can already tell this is a project better suited to him.

I find it odd that after his scene-stealing role in The Hangover he's been relatively absent from mainstream comedy.

Looks good.

I'll check it out. Good comedians can pull off dramatic roles and Zach needs it before he gets typecasts.

I think it's just that comedians are generally pretty good actors. It's hard to be funny on camera.

This looks like a real good movie, count me as intrigued. Good to see Daniel Faraday again, brotha.

This movie looks pretty good, but I hate when a Movie preview gives you the rope a dope. I got duked really hard by the Family Stone preview which featured Luke Wilson (not too long after Old School) and teh preview was funny and filled with slap stick. I went to see it and wanted to shoot myself in the face for how depressing it was.

Cool premise. I think I'll dig this. But you're absolutely right in that some people will be pissed because they're expecting a Hangover-esque movie. 20 minutes in they'll discover it's not what they thought, they'll tighten up and put up a mental block that "the movie sucks," and they'll leave grunting and ranting. Totally disregarding the film on any other terms.

I heard reactions like that in Juno because of Michael Cera and in Adventureland because of Greg Mottola, and the admittedly

I think it looks great. Some drama with enough comedy thrown in to keep it from being a drain.
