Zach Galifianakis on The Hangover movies: "I wished we had just done one"

01.28.2016

The Hangover Part II Todd Phillips Zach Galifianakis Bradley Cooper Ed Helms Banner

THE HANGOVER was a big hit both critically and financially, however the sequels definitely failed to recapture the magic of the first installment. The second movie may have performed well at the box office, earning over $550 million worldwide, but most critics and moviegoers were unimpressed with the follow-up, while the third film ended up being the lowest grossing and rated entry in the comedy trilogy.

Zach Galifianakis has always seemed a little uneasy about THE HANGOVER franchise, and during an appearance on Marc Maron’s WTF podcast, said there probably should have only been one movie.

Look, that was a good chunk of my life that I do not regret at all but I wished we had just done one. I think leave well enough alone sometimes.

Galifianakis went on to jokingly say that, "We’re contracted up to 12. I feel a real appetite out there for more. I mean, in 10 years when all this dries up I’m sure I’ll be knocking on people’s doors, ‘Hey, I got this idea… look, I’m still weird!'"

Personally, I've never been a fan of the Todd Phillips-directed comedies. Although I've enjoyed Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms in other films, THE HANGOVER movies really didn't do much for me, including the first one. As a whole the series has grossed almost $1.5 billion worldwide, so don't be surprised if in a few years Warner Bros. announces that a sequel/spinoff/reboot is in the works.

Zach Galifianakis can be seen next on the big screen in Greg Mottola's KEEPING UP WITH THE JONESES on April 1, 2016, and he also stars in Jared Hess' MASTERMINDS, which is due out on September 30, 2016.

The first one was pretty good. It somewhat ruined for me by this big dude in the theater who, after laughing, would rock back and forth in his chair and give a loud clap after every vaguely sexual joke. The second one was depressing and I didn't see the third.

i still wished they did my idea for a third movie...

The guys go to Moscow for Alan's wedding. It turns out he's getting a mail order bride of some sort. They end up loosing Jeffery Tambor at the bachelor party and have to navigate Moscow looking for him.

He's right, they definitely should have just done one. But since they decided to do the sequels, they just dropped the ball on making them any good. Part 2 was just a rehash of the first movie and Part 3 was just taking everything that was ridiculous about the first two movies and taking it even further.

I always felt that Part 2 should have been a year after the wedding and Doug and his wife decided to take the entire wedding party for a weekend getaway. The boys end up getting drunk the

I always felt that Part 2 should have been a year after the wedding and Doug and his wife decided to take the entire wedding party for a weekend getaway. The boys end up getting drunk the night before they need to leave, wake up with "hangovers" and need to catch up with their wives, etc. Turning the movie into a drunken road trip movie - but without all of the memory loss shenanigans. I guess technically he made that movie with Due Date, so there ya go.

The Hangover franchise and the Taken franchise are the poster children for "should have just done one."

The first one is a classic and I enjoyed the sequels for what they were. I do think part three was better than part two.

Yeah, the first one was comedy gold and the other two were lackluster, to say the least
