Zack And Miri NC-17

07.24.2008

Ladies and gentlemen, the MPAA does it again. Kevin Smith's latest ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO has received the ratings kiss of death. NC-17. The reason? "Some graphic sexuality." So let me get this straight. In the last year onscreen I have seen women raped, heads blown to bits, limbs removed from bodies and Ryan Reynolds attempt to act. Yet somehow, a low-budget comedy that I will assume deals with sex comically and realistically is forbidden to those with an untrained eye. Now the overwhleming task lies on the shoulders of one Kevin Smith to chop this film all the way to an R rating and make it commercially viable. Goddamn I love Hollywood.

Extra Tidbit: GRINDHOUSE was orginally rated NC-17 but was chopped up to obtain an R rating. We all know how that turned out.

dvd makes ratings kinda pointless anyway

Every movie gets "Unrated" editions these days, so it's not as big a deal to have movies cut for theatrical release like 10 years ago when VHS was still dominant, and there weren't as many "Director's Cuts" or one of the 1000 other alternate versions easily available.

Why is it okay for stores to sell "Unrated" DVD's, but movies in theaters have to be rated? All unrated really means is they haven't been submitted to the MPAA, so why can't a movie going to theaters do that? Either way, the system is bogus.

Lame

Hey hey hey, I like Ryan Reynolds!

I think it is a bit ridiculous that this is getting an NC-17, when these dime-a-dozen horror movies can have graphic violence, nudity, and much more, and they gets R's. I mean you can even have mass violence in PG-13 movie now-a-days. I just think the MPAA as a whole is pretty bogus.

The MPAA, ever since I can remember, has always been much more strict when rating low budget and/or independent films, but much more lenient on big budget studio films that need a certain rating to make their money back.

Basically, if the MPAA applied the same standards to EVERY film, could not be bought, and if all theaters would show movies of any rating (other than porn), there would be far less reason to complain about the MPAA.

I heard Grindhouse didn't have problems, which surprised the hell out of the filmmakers. Then again, maybe they pre-emptively cut the film.

Personally, I think since Smith is not stranger to the MPAA, and this thing is a comedy about porn, they oughta just keep the NC-17(or unrated) and make a huge viral campaign so people still turn out to see it.

And this coming from a guy living in the so-called Bible Belt.

Kevin Smith should pull a Michael Bay and get Stephen Speilberg to use his awesome powers to protest the rating and get it changed to R without anything major changing. I swear I think they dont like Kevin and its probably the fact porno is in the title

If this remains NC-17, I won't be able to see it till DVD. No theater around here will touch it, Bible Belt and all and I am deep in it.

Ryan Reynolds can act better than most

Doesn't matter what the rating is, it's not like Kevin Smith movies are commercially viable

And the "fans" come out of the wood work! Gotta love it when people like scottistops come out to shake a wagging finger in our faces and remind us Smith isn't Scorsese.

yawn.

this isn't like it's the first time smith has had to cut a film down from an nc-17... if i'm correct, the only film to get by on first review with an R was clerks 2 (other than jersey girl, of course). if i'm wrong... eh, there are worse things to be wrong about.

i'm sure that, regardless of the cuts, smith's legion of internet sycophants will love every frame that remains intact in theaters, regardless of the actual quality of the film. and c'mon, it's not like he's going to forgo for the

by the way, are you proposing that "grindhouse" failed because it had to have cuts made and, therefore, WASN'T longer? i thought the 3 hour running time was the primary deterrent for people going to see it... other than it having an extremely niche audience, of course. still, what a blast of a film!

Yeah it matters DarkElfa because theatre chains won't carry films with an NC-17 rating so essentially this is the death knell for the film. 12 minutes of cuts is one hell of a lot.

Not so fast

The appeal screening isn't until August 4th, and Kevin has already said that whether through winning the appeal or through cuts this film will be rated R. He stated in Smodcast that he has cut 12 minutes for the appeal screening, but if they should lose the appeal then more cuts will have to be made sadly.

Does it really matter? Aren't most of his fans in their 20's and 30's anyways and we aren't about to care now, nor have we ever cared about a film's rating, so whats the big deal?

MPAA vs. Kevin Smith

I'm pretty sure the MPAA just hates Kevin Smith. He claimed that Clerks was originally rated NC-17, and, without cutting anything, all it took to get it to an R was a phone call from Harvey Weinstein. Ever since then, the MPAA have been total assholes, giving Smith no leeway at all and being strict as shit.

If Hollywood wants to submit to a ratings system, they should at least have a board that monitors the group's ratings. They are unchecked and have an alarming amount of power without

Just remember what the MPAA says. . .

Horrific, deplorable violence is okay, as long as people don't say any naughty words!

Or in this case, images.

Such crap

I'm now going to be worried when this movie gets cut down to R rated because of how much shit had to be taken out. A part of me just wants smith to say FUCK IT and go to DVD so he doesn't have to slash the film but I doubt that would happen.

I still don't understand why filmmakers submit to the ratings system. They should boycott it until a more transparent institution is in place.

Dumb.

I swear, they need to get their shit together and come up with a consistent rating system.

But then again, this might be good. Let' see...Elizabeth Banks in a movie that's rated NC-17? That makes my loins hum just a little.

yeah the standards are all f*cked up.

I'd much rather see a full on gang bang than a child being raped and murdered.

I think that's a tad more offensive.

He should re-cut back up

Yeah, I heard the SModcast comment that this is as far as he'd cut it down, since this is the 3rd cut. I think that now that he's getting an NC-17 anyway, he should put back all the shit he's been editing out over the last few weeks.

???

So raping a young girl in a trailer while shooting her mother in the stomach from "The Hills Have Eyes" is better than some sexual comedy in a low-budget film? Wow....

Not cutting it

Smith said in the latest SMODCAST that he won't be cutting it any further and will accept the NC-17.
