Zack Snyder calls up a radio show to defend Aquaman

08.08.2014

Aquaman has long been the butt of many jokes, but from the sound of it, Zack Snyder and (most likely) Jason Momoa are planning to turn that around. This morning on CBS Detroit, the hosts decided to talk some smack about Aquaman possibly making an appearance in BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE. It seems as if a certain director had some time away from creating Batman v Superman/Star Wars mash-ups to clarify just how badass Aquaman can be.

Here's what Snyder had to say:

You guys were disparaging, a little bit, Aquaman. I don't want to give anything away about the movie or anything like that, but Aquaman has some cool abilities. People are like, "Oh what? Does he talk to animals? Because that seems like what he does. Or fish?" The cool thing with Aquaman is he has his trident. You have to realize that could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact. That's a thing that's in the canon. He's super strong because, of course, he can exist at these super deep depths. So when he comes up here, he's crazy strong. Anyway, not to say he's in my movie or anything like that, but he has the potential to be bad ass, that's all I’m saying.

I loved the fact Snyder called in to set the record straight. Obviously there's some things he can't talk about but this is as close as one can get it. You can check out today's broadcast here, which has been uploaded since. I certainly don't mind people poking fun at Aquaman but something tells me Khal Drogo will paint the character in a new light.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think Snyder & Momoa will create a badass Aquaman?

Pffft

"This isn't just some random plug for what I am obviously setting up for the franchise I'm working on. You gotta realize that."
Aquaman has always gotten a lot of shit, but I don't really have a problem with him in many iterations (some are lame). Then again, what I DON'T like is Snyder acting like he's just randomly defending Aquaman as if there isn't a hidden agenda. THAT is lame.

In Synder I Trust!

I have no worries that Aquaman is going to be the bad ass he is in these new DC Films. I knew once the casting came out that Jason Momoa would be playing the King of Atlantis, my worries were set aside. If nobody has read the recent incarnation of Aquaman in the New 52 please do, the guy is pure awesome! I can only imagine that one day we will see Atlantis on the big screen, how cool would that be?

You're absolutely right. Snyder has zero history of doing such a thing. This was viral marketing through and through. But you can't point something like that out to these talkbacks cause they are full of fanboys (and I stress the word boys) and astroturfers (which is something I used to do for a PR firm that worked directly with several major studios).

Warner Bros is as much to blame for Aquaman having the reputation of just being a silly character as anyone. Even in recent years the most high profile thing they've done is regularly mock the character on Big Bang Theory, so the millions who watch that show who might not have been overly aware of the character have been informed that he sucks. It's a cheap laugh but they're not really doing themselves any favours.
Thing is you can have a comedic portrayal of Aquaman that works - the way they

Thing is you can have a comedic portrayal of Aquaman that works - the way they used him in Batman: The Brave And The Bold was hilarious without simply mocking him.
But Snyder's correct in the respect that Aquaman can be a badass and insanely powerful. He's not generally accepted as being one of DC's top tier characters because he's never been as popular as 'the trinity' of Bats, Supes and Wonder Woman, but he's an integral part of the upper echelons of the DCU and should be treated as such.

Aquaman is not lame. There have been depictions of him that are lame, but there have also been depictions of Batman that are lame and there definitely have been depictions of Superman that are lame. Aquaman is the king of the seas, and 71% of the earth is covered by ocean. He doesn't just talk to fish; he has control over everything in the ocean - everything from orcas to flesh-eating bacteria. He cut off his own hand to save his baby. His wife is hot as all get-out. It's not the worst possible

It's not the worst possible casting decision there, or even the worst casting decision for this film, but Aquaman should have a swimmer's build. His GoT co-star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau was always my favourite for the role. Alexander Skarsgard and Josh Holloway have also been suggested; those work too. But if they style Momoa like angry pirate Viking Aquaman, it just might work.

"You have to realize that could cut the flesh of Superman if they came in contact." This is Snyder's films in a nut shell. He only cares about the most superficial aspects of these characters, and how much damage they can do. This is why we are getting a versus movie instead of a Wold's Finest movie. Snyder once said that "With Man of Steel I wanted to prove that Superman can be scary and dangerous if he gets mad".

He's like a 10 year old kid playing with toys. There is no real concept of

Steel, Batman & Robin, Catwoman, Jonah Hex, Green Lantern, & Man of Steel show that the DC/WB relationship doesn't exactly produce the best of films. Regardless of what DC signs off on.

I understand where your coming from, DC and WB have a bad past, but your second comment has nothing to do with Synder.

You can tell he is a comic fan (unlike Goyer). I think Aquaman is a great character who has been made campy by many things beyond the control of the writers. I would definitely like to see him get rid of that tag.

I went to watch Hercules the other day and my kid likes those superhero key rings you get out of the slot machines ...by paying a pound. There's pictures of the entire collection on the box ...and my kid goes ...I'd like...Robin ...no..may be Superman ....oh wait ...Batman.... Cyborg would be okay. So he puts the pound in...turns the dial. The sphere package comes out...I see the orange colour of the torso through the translucent half of the sphere...and my hearts sinks...but I remain

It's apparent that Snyder is obviously a huge fan of the character and understands the motivations that drive him. He has a real grasp of the character's place in the DC Universe and the role of power and dominance that he plays in this vast mythology. Allow me to quote the director: "The cool thing with Aquaman is he has his trident." Very eloquent.

I've got zero beef with Aquaman but this just sounds like a Mom trying to explain why their kid is special. Who cares Zack? Just make the movie, preferably fast since details about it are spilling out like a leaky water balloon.

Super Friends gave Aquaman a bad rap. Anyone who has watched the Justice League cartoon recognizes that this guy has a legit mythological background as a citizen of Atlantis, and that he's pretty badass. DC heroes all have long, long histories full of embarrassing, bad decisions. But in the right hands, it's possible for any one of them to be awesome. Even the god damn Wonder Twins.

Snyder and Momoa are going to make Aquaman badass. I don't think Momoa was anyone's first choice, but I like the fact that (hopefully) Momoa will bring a strong presence to the character. Which is something he desperately needs considering the general audience thinks he isn't as cool as Superman or Batman and/or isn't as strong as them as well.

Could it be possible that some characters don't need to be badass? Is that really all we're going for? A "badass" factor? Would you describe Superman as badass? I wouldn't. But in Snyder's attempt at making him badass by showing how cool Superman would look crashing and booming into crumbling spires or jumping over an oil tanker so that it could look "badass" when he's walking away from the engulfed building, he only succeeds in missing the point of what makes these characters everlasting and

Damn you, Soloist, you've done it again and gotten a rise out of me!

Heroes don't have to be badass. Gandhi wasn't badass. Martin Luthor King wasn't badass. But SUPERheroes DO have to be badass, unfortunately, even though this may reduce their value as role models. You aren't, unfortunately, going to defeat Zod by talking to him. In real life you are going to save more lives by talking instead of punching but that doesn't make for exciting movies.

I don't think Aquaman is a joke, but I don't think he'll work in a film. He might be able to do a cool cameo, but that's not really much. I don't see how any solo film could be done. It'll either be a remake of Thor where he's banished or whatever but he will be in earth even longer, or it will be ALL cgi.
