Zack Snyder lines up post-Superman directing job, while Man of Steel gets its Perry White

Aug. 2, 2011by: Dave Davis

When SUCKER PUNCH plunged into Fiasco Chasm like an expensive computer-rendered dirigible weighed down by a leaden script, perhaps it was fortunate for director Zack Snyder that he had already lined up his next movie, the Superman relaunch MAN OF STEEL.

Now he's apparently not waiting to see how the Kryptonian flies before setting up his next gig. Twitch says that Snyder will direct the Sean Penn/Christian Bale Afghanistan action-thriller THE LAST PHOTOGRAPH (which the filmmaker was already producing) when he's done with the big red 'S'.

The project stars Penn as "an ex-special ops soldier who arrives in Afghanistan to seek vengeance for the murder of his brother's family. He enlists a war photographer (Bale), the sole survivor of the attack that killed his brother, who captured the event in a photo."

Niels Arden Oplev, who directed THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO in its native country, was originally attached but departed for unspecified reasons. Snyder co-wrote the script with Kurt Johnstad (300).

Meanwhile, Snyder's SUPERMAN is getting ready to take off, and is still filling in the final human roles. And now EW says that former Keanu trainer and CSI regular Laurence Fishburne will play Clark Kent and Lois Lane's superior, Daily Planet's resolute honcho Perry White.

MAN OF STEEL stars Henry Cavill as Supes, Amy Adams as Lois, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora, Kevin Costner as Jonathan Kent, and Diane Lane as Martha Kent. Russell Crowe was in talks to play Superman's dad Jor-El. The movie is scheduled for release June 14, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: Fishburne is married to Gina Torres, best known as "Firefly" warrior woman Zoe, but who has also voiced DC characters Vixen and Wonder Woman in animated form.

Terrible

Love Larry Fishburne (see King of New York) but this is just Hollywood trying to be PC again. BS! I want Denzel Washington to play JFK in a movie.

I'm interested but does anyone else

think synopsis sounds odd for a Zack Snyder film? I'm all for him trying a different, more laid back approach but I don't see that movie working any other way... what gets me even more is he and the 300 guy wrote it? This sounds like a true exercise for them, which is really really cool. Hope he still has time to direct a segment in the new Heavy Metal though

Say what you will about Snyder...

he can put a HELL of an ensemble cast together.
People have always been polarised on his abilities as a filmmaker, but WOW does this guy know who to put in what role.

Holy Shit

What a awesome choice for Perry White. Fishburne is a great actor & will own every scene he is in! The cast for Superman just gets better & better. Russell Crowe as Jor-El would be fantastic. Everything is lining up to make this be a great film! Hopefully Snyder won't cock it up.

+1 for Fishburne, -1 for Crowe. Personal opinion, of course.

For many of the same reasons I thought Kevin Costner would make a fantastic Perry White, so too will Lawrence Fishburne. Really inspired casting right there. Perry White has to be a bit like what Jim Gordon is to Batman. Tough, sincere, pragmatic. Really looking forward to seeing Fishburne go back-and-forth with Amy Adams' Lois Lane over spelling and journalistic ethics.

Hell Yeah! Sell Them paper's Morpheus!

First, I gotta say a VERY BIG LOL to DarkElfa's reply to Huttjos' comment. I do not think I've laughed THAT hard @ something in a long ass time.

..Oh, and yeah, I'm not even gonna comment on the change of race for a comic book character. If the change suits the character & if it's a kick-ass actor (which Laurence Fishburne obviously is) then it's cool w/ me.

@Huttjos

Neither was any other supporting character in the 1930s.
Let's not have this turn into another embarassing Idris Elba/Heimdall episode.

Oh, there were black supporting characters back then, it's just they were all horrendously racist caricatures, lol.

I'm not one to complain about changing the race of characters in a movie (like Kingpin from Daredevil or Felix from the Bond movies) as long as a good actor is cast. Fishburne should do good in the part, although White never seems to be a major character anyway.

Don't understand you getting down-voted. I agree, and those are perfect examples. But yeah, Perry's always gonna be a minor character, but without him it just wouldn't be the Daily Planet.

I've always found Perry White to be a very dull character in the films, despite being portrayed by good actors. Jackie Cooper's Perry was one-dimensional, and Frank Langella's Perry was basically a replica of that. Hopefully Fishburne will be allowed to make it a more relevant and interesting supporting character.

There's probably quite a few black people with the last name White. There's the NFL player, Reggie White.
