Zack Snyder on all things Man of Steel, including the possibility of directing Justice League

Apr. 24, 2013by: Paul Shirey

There is a wealth of information in the latest article from Empire on MAN OF STEEL, where director Zack Snyder addresses the mythology of Superman, his take on the comic-book genre, the lasting power of WATCHMEN, and a number of other interesting bits that have helped shape his vision for the emerging franchise. When Snyder was first announced there was a lot of pros/cons coming from the fanbase, but the marketing and buzz from the film have seemingly proven to show Snyder's interpretation of the Last Son of Krypton is spot on thus far.

In the article, it states that the expectation is for the studio to sign Snyder for JUSTICE LEAGUE if MAN OF STEEL is a success, saying:

"Warner Bros.’ long-term view has been revised to embrace this new vision, just as the Dark Knight films resisted the commodification of Marvel. Whether we get a Justice League, they say, depends on MAN OF STEEL. If we do, they say, Zack Snyder will be asked to direct."

Snyder's own perspective on the film and its potential success is modest, but hopeful:

“I have a hard time having perspective, but I have to say that it is everything that I could have hoped for. Touch wood that I am not insane, but it feels really good.”

Snyder on the comparison of MAN OF STEEL to THE DARK KNIGHT and Marvel films:

“When you talk about superhero action movies, there is Batman of course, and I think that Chris (Nolan) laid a lot of important groundwork. And there are the Marvel movies... I don’t mean it as an insult, Iron Man and Hulk are strong superheroes, but we’ve never had a superhero movie where everyone can go, ‘Yeah, I understand the why of the whole thing.’ Superman is a character who deciphers the why of superheroes.”

Snyder confirms that the film is his vision (which clocks in at a 2:28 runtime), saying: "The movie is the director’s cut."

The director also touches on the backlash after he was announced as the director of MAN OF STEEL, saying:

“For me it is like, ‘Whatever.’ I don’t know what they really want, so it is impossible to really take that with anything but a grain of salt. Otherwise you would do nothing. They want the underwear! ‘Do you really?’”

Snyder also says that there are subtle hints of "Universe building" in MAN OF STEEL as they pertain to DC:

“in a weird way it is also the DC world. I have been making references to the DC universe, just to let you know that world is out there.”

Snyder's take on Alan Moore's WATCHMEN was a flop at the box office, but it's been long thought of as a movie before its time, as general audiences didn't understand a movie about the deconstruction of superheroes as the genre was just taking off. However, Snyder is pleased with his progression in superhero cinema:

“I was really glad I could do it in that order.” Snyder means Watchmen first, Man Of Steel afterwards. “The irony of Superman is that it is not ironic. The irony of Watchmen is that the whole thing is ironic.”

Lastly, Snyder discussed the use of 3D and the set-up of MAN OF STEEL as a franchise:

“By the way, we like to think that the 3D is just another way of seeing the movie. It is not Superman 3D, it is Man Of Steel, available in 3D.” As for the potential sequel: "We didn’t design the movie like Batman, but I don’t think anybody would say that you design a Superman movie as a one-off.”

Whew! A lot of info and lots more in the article. I'm excited to hear Snyder being excited. He most certainly sounds fully invested in MAN OF STEEL, hardly stepping in as someone just to "get the job done." Judging by all we've seen thus far, MAN OF STEEL continues to be the movie to beat this summer.

MAN OF STEEL opens June 14, 2013.

Flop?

Watchmen was an R rated movie that made the same amount of money as the PG-13 The Incredible Hulk. I think a lot of people didn't see it because they didn't want to see a blue penis.

Running time?

Other sites claim that the Empire article states 2:10 as the running time, not 2:28 like this article says...
what's the deal?

I have complete faith that Snyder, Nolan, and Cavill have not only delivered us a hell of a Superman film, but a hell of a great film in general. Synder would be my first choice for the Justice League film, but if not then I would love to see DC make those Ben Affleck rumors true. He would do a great job.

I'm more excited for Iron Man 3, but I think Man of Steel will ultimately be THE FILM of the summer. I just get excited how Man of Steel could be the beginning of the road to the Justice

Watchmen was horrible

But certainly not due to Snyder's direction - it was a beautifully filmed movie. The story is just so boring and not for me. I enjoy intellectual films, but this story so beloved by many is just a major snooze fest. I didn't care for any of the characters other than the Comedian and Rorschach

I guess we didnt see the same Watchmen flick because it is definitely more intellectual than you seem to realize. Try watching it again without preconceived notions and I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

i would like to see him direct a X-men movie. I like all of his films ranging from Dawn of the dead to suckerpunch. But watchmen is one of my all time favorite movies. When jimi hendrix all along the watchtower comes on i get goosebumps everytime. i love that efing movie. its the fastest three hours in cinema history imo.

Lets just get Snyder thinking about MOS 2 and then worry about 3 and the Justice League. I tend to think he would knock a JLA movie out of the park.

Just saying

By the way, I haven't heard anyone talk about how great Kevin Costner looks as Jonathan Kent. Just showing some love.

Watchmen Should've been After The Avengers

I still believe that "The Watchmen" would've worked better as a film after "The Avengers". It would have meant more to audiences, and it probably would not have been a box office flop. Same movie, just different timing would have changed everything.

Suuuuuuuuuuuure, because the why of each of the origins of the heroes in the Marvel standalone movies are SO hard to understand... Why don't they just quit mentioning Marvel altogether and try to move forward with Justice League? It's embarrasing enough to know that they had

How about Man of Steel 2 and 3? Imagine what Snyder could do with Doomsday, Darkseid or Brainiac.

End credit scene for Justice League:

"My Lord, the humans have defeated Brainiac. To face them again would be to court death!"

Darkside smiles.

Meanwhile, end credit scene for Days of Future Past:

"My Lord, the mutants have defeated the Sentinels. To face them again would be to court death."

Apocalypse smiles.

I wouldn't want to see Snyder take on any Marvel properties. His style just fits DC so much better, rather him just be a DC guy.

I'm curious, why do you think his style fits more with the DC comics/universe than Marvel's? I don't understand what makes you think he's more compatible with DC than Marvel?

I get what dannyschmanny's gong for. The biggest difference from my perspective of DC and Marvel is that Marvel has always been slightly more accessibly epic while DC is a more surreal epic. Which is why people like Joss Whedon, Jon Favreau and Joe Johntson (directors typically more grounded in reality based absurdity) fit that universe to a tee. Where as someone like Synder and Nolan have a grander "God's among mortals" style directing. Does that make sense? Am I even close d-schmans?

Is it too much to ask for in hopIng we get a Snyder helmed Superman trilogy and Justice League? I just don't want the MoS series to be compromised by JL, but it would be nice if it somehow all happened.

Didn't you mean Nolan's Image?

It's funny the moment Nolan removes himself from the DC universe it becomes Snyder's vision. MOS is a freebie Zack. Don't fuck it up!

Nolan himself has said this very much Snyder's own vision & really didn't have much input.
