Zack Snyder talks DCU rules for Justice League, "sidelined" Batman & more

Love it or hate it, Zack Snyder is playing an integral role in setting up DC's Extended Universe. Not only has he brought MAN OF STEEL and BATMAN V SUPERMAN to fruition, but he'll also be helming the JUSTICE LEAGE films. April's issue of WIRED magazine has an interview with director Zack Snyder, in which he talks about some of the controversial things of the DCEU, like killing off Zod, destroying Metropolis and setting up rules for the various heroes. Thanks to the Superman Home Page, you can check out some of the tidbits of that conversation below.

Zack Snyder regarding the destruction of Metropolis and the killing of Zod:

To me, the killing of Zod is not as big a deal as the destruction of Metropolis. It's important that these movies have consequences, that there is collateral damage. In Batman v Superman I wanted to show how Bruce Wayne feels when reduced to a sideline sitter. Batman is frightened by his impotence in the face of that.

On establishing rules for DC's heroes:

We've been strict with our rules. What they can do - Batman, Superman, Flash, Cyborg - we really are hard on ourselves because we want all those things to have a reality, a mythological grounding.

Regarding female representation in the DCEU:

Female empowerment is a thing I've gone after in all my films. They all have strong female representation. It's about time Wonder Woman was represented correctly.

I know that Zack Snyder hasn't exactly won everyone over, but there's no denying that the man has a real passion for bringing comic book stories to film. Even if BVS doesn't turn out as great as everyone hopes it will be, he's helping to lay the tracks for all the other DC films we'll see in the next decade. I don't know about you, but if that Affleck-directed Batman ever comes to fruition, then it'll be worth it!

BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE opens on March 25, 2016.

Here's waht bothers me about this thing.

While making Man Of Steel, Zack is quoted by saying something to the effect of not being interested in an expanded universe. So basally when he destroyed Metropolis he was just trying to cause mass destruction for the sake of entertainment and everyone went bat shit. When WB offered him the job of creating a DCCU he found a way to give all that destruction purpose but that wasn't his original intention even though he's trying to pass it off like it was his idea the whole time.

What the hell did he just say about female empowerment?!

"Female empowerment is a thing I've gone after in all my films. They all have strong female representation. It's about time Wonder Woman was represented correctly." - Zack Snyder. I choked on my lunch when I read this. Really Snyder? Would you like to explain why you cast a woman who clearly has an eating disorder as Wonder Woman? And Why you felt the need to make a movie about women who pretend to be prostitutes because they are consistently being raped (Sucker Punch)? If you're for some

If you're for some reason excited to watched BvS you have to admit this guy is delusional.

Gal Gadot is not a woman with an eating disorder. Amazing how you body shame.

She may not have an eating disorder, but I take his point. Wonder woman is an amazon and Gal Gadot is anything but. That is not to say I can't look past it and enjoy her performance but I too would have liked to have seen an actor in that role who is more representative of the character. Zack has walked the line of female empowerment. James Cameron on the other hand is a directer that has had a strong female in almost everyone of his films begin as a docile character and by the end they are the

Remember it was Rose who came to Jack's rescue.

First off, saying someone "clearly has an eating disorder" who other than being a slender young woman has absolutely zero signs of of such a disease is a really shitty thing to say. I get it if you didn't like MOS and aren't looking forward to BvS. It's a stylistic preference that doesn't meet you where you're at. Can't please everybody. But c'mon man, that's at best unreasonable and at worst just cruel.

Secondly, from Dawn of the Dead all the way up through MOS Snyder's films have some of the stronger and more competent female characters in movies today. From Sarah Polley as an instant widow struggling to survive in a world gone mad to Lena Headey holding her own like a champ in a world quite literally ruled by only men, I'd say he's made a strong effort not to conform to the Hollywood cookie cutter idea of female roles in film and television. I certainly don't think he's delusional, at least not on this point.

Yeah I'm cruel. Gal Gadot's life must be so hard looking like that. What's more cruel my comments about Gal Gadot's body, or casting her as one of the most iconic female role models ever, setting an unrealistic expectation of body image for girls. Go back to your PC bro dorm rooms.

Nothing PC about being kind, man. I honestly just don't understand the hate this girl has gotten since her casting. I have actually heard and read far worse than what you said. Nonetheless for some reason the fact that WB and Snyder didn't genetically engineer a cross between Brock Lesnar and Alexandra Daddario to play WW seems plenty excuse for many to tear Gadot to shreds. On a side note, she may be awful, or she may end up being a revelation, but I certainly don't think her physicality

On a side note, she may be awful, or she may end up being a revelation, but I certainly don't think her physicality is a deal breaker, particularly given the fact that WW doesn't exactly get her godlike strength from hitting up 24 hour Fitness and not forgetting to eat plenty of protein. Let's give her a fair shot. I'll be the first to admit I thought "pretty boy Heath Ledger" was gonna stink up the place as Joker. I was, uh... well I was reaalllly wrong.

As far as Sucker Punch goes, I've only seen pieces of it, mainly because I thought it wasn't very good, effects aside. What can I say, they can't all be gems I guess. I think the majority of Snyder's work supports his statements though.

Screwing up the batman character

The fact that batman would feel "impotent" because of superman is a Complete Misrepresentation of the character!! He has always taken precautions to make sure that in the event superman turned on humanity he would be able to take him out but that does come from him feeling impotent it comes from his intellect (batman's real superpower).

I think he means that as the city is torn apart by two titans fighting, Bruce/Batman is powerless at the time. He's clearly taken precautions since then.
It's possible he may know of the legends of some hero saving lives and doing some of the impossible but that doesn't mean he knows this is an alien with god-like power. Batman may be crazy smart but he's not psychic. The destruction showed him that something powerful was out there and he prepared for that after the fact. He was helpless in

you're telling me that at a meeting in metropolis Batman was 100% ready for an alien invasion that if Superman hadnt stopped that within 2 hours metropolis would have been brough to the ground.

Sorry not so, he was caught by surprise and it was unexpected and thats enough to feel impotent. All he could do was run towards the danger in a damn business suit. Get over youself looking for any excuse to discredit the movie.

Talentless One Note Hack

"Female empowerment is a thing I've gone after in all my films." Yeah, that is why in every one of his movies all the female characters are ditzy, or there for eye candy only. They never have any brains and are the catalyst for a lot of the fuck ups that happen in the movie. Wonder Woman being played by a toothpick who can't act is literally going against what he claims.

I loved Watchmen and i really think most fans trouble with it is that it tells the story well. But that story is dark a bleak and ultimately the main villain is right in his plan.
It's really the type of film that should have been made well AFTER the super hero genre had become well established.

You make good pints about Watchmen. I loved the comic, enjoyed the movie, but it was too much to cram into one movie as well. Scenes come and go so fast there's no time to fully digest and linger. Still, it was impressive and better than I expected anyone to make.

I think his views on women are fairly straightforward if you watch his films. Every one has a strong willed, fighter female as one (or all) of the main characters. His view of them comes from a 15 year old anime fans mindset, sure. But from Sarah Polley (DotD), Lena Headey (300), Malin Ackerman (Watchment), and everyone in Sucker Punch, its always tinier, skinny, sexy girls who kick ass more than Rhonda Rousey. Thats why its called fantasy, And when you're in the directors chair, you get

Anybody who shits on Watchmen, never read the graphic novel in my opinion. It's very true to the source material. The only Snyder film that I just couldn't watch was Sucker Punch. I just couldn't get into it. MOS was good. All the people who talked about the destruction as a negative clearly didn't understand that it was a jumping off point for BvS. And anyone who doesn't understand why Batman is fighting Superman, needs to read The Dark Knight Returns. Say what you will about Snyder, but

I agree - Watchmen really stays true to its original source, apart from the final climax. And yeah, Sucker Punch starts off great but gradually losing its steam along the way.

I think it's kind of funny that all the whining and complaining about MoS and the destruction never considered for a second that the destruction was the jumping off point for the entire DC film universe. Superman learned that winning wasn't enough, he had to protect people. Batman learned that working on his own wasn't enough....some things are too big for him. WW learned that she had to be involved to protect people from what can happen. My guess will be that Flash & Cyborg will be more

After Watchmen, Man of Steel, and how great Dawn of Justice looks, I have all the faith in the world that Snyder will more than deliver and then some. Absolutely can't wait to see how Dawn of Justice leads into the other solo films and especially the beginning of Justice League.
