Zack Snyder's Man of Steel gets its official MPAA rating; Plus, new villains?

Jan. 23, 2013by: Paul Shirey

And it's a hard R!! For scenes of intense gore, decapitation, and apocalyptic destruction.

Okay, we all know that would never happen.  But, man, what if it did?  The expected rating for Zack Snyder's MAN OF STEEL is PG-13 "for intense sequences of sci-fi violence, action and destruction, and for some language."  This is consistent with most superhero movies, which is perfectly consistent with the general rating of the source material, at least in terms of how the material is presented.  The Comics Code Authority was dismantled years ago, leaving the industry to self-regulate and they've done well in keeping things consistent with which books are marketed to who.  PG-13 is the most suitable rating for mainstream books and I'm glad to see Supes stick with it (SUPERMAN RETURNS was also rated PG-13).

In other MAN OF STEEL news, it seems that news of two new villains in the film has leaked online, courtesy of...Lego sets?  Yep, those damn marketing tie-ins really know how to screw the secrecy pooch, don't they?  The folks at Warner Bros. have been pretty good about keeping things under wraps, so there's certainly the possibility that this isn't accurate, but it sure seems legit.

According to a source for comicbook.com, a Lego set at the London Toy Fair revealed a "Battle of Smallville" playset, which has a character of Tor-An, a "sleeper-agent" of Zod on Earth.  The source also states that another villain, Dev-Em, a Kryptonian juvenile deinquent sentenced to the Phantom Zone, will also be in the film.  Tor-An is reportedly played by Richard Cetrone and Dev-Em by Richard Dufresne, both of whom previously worked with Snyder on SUCKERPUNCH.

True? False? Rumor?  Who's to say?  Neither actor is listed on IMDB, but it seems fair to think that this could be accurate given the shroud of secrecy on the project thus far.  The sky's the limit, really.

MAN OF STEEL, starring Henry Cavill, Kevin Costner, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Michael Shannon, Amy Adams, and Laurence Fishburne takes flight on June 14, 2013.

Extra Tidbit: I'm all for Superman having a host of supervillains to fight. I'm tired of him fighting rocks and yachts.

It'd be weird if "General Zod" had only one minion to command, so hopefully this is 100% true.

If there's any slow-mo in it, it should be Rated R for Annoyance.

The movie is going to be amazing. I'm still assuming Lex Luthor is going to be in this? Or maybe foreshadow him in someway for the potential sequel(s)?

I like it

I like everything that I am hearing. If they do Lex, it should be further down the road in a sequel. I've had enough Lex Luthor. Bring on Brainiac, Bizarro and Mr. Mxyzptlk. He also shouldn't be lifting heavy things and putting them down again. Maybe a few times, but it shouldn't be the basis for the whole movie. I'm okay with Zod.

Of course he has super humor

Great news to hear.. it sounds like old Supes will be up for a bigger battle then we thought. In Nolan we trust, everything this guy is involved in turns to gold.

As long as it's not Lex Luthor (who bores me to death as a villain) plus if they are going with a darker approach then he certainly doesn't fit into the mold. Like I said before the more I see & hear about MOS, the more i look forward to seeing it.

If Lex exists in the form we all know him as...in this universe...I'll be completely gob smacked if he isn't mentioned in someway. They guy was essentially Mr Metropolis before Supes show up...you can't just ignore him and then plan to bring him in to a sequel. Personally, I'd bring him in as the one of the main villains in MoS 2...warning the government about the need to protect ourselves from these super powered beings...an angle of relevance given this movie and the pending JL

Heck, if I had my way, I'd copy a scene from the animated movie Doomsday where you see the back of Luther as Supes and Doomsday slug it out and his office building window cracks from the shockwaves of their punches. Perhaps a brief scene just before that shows the Lex Corp building...so we know for sure...it's him.

That image of Superman blasting up into the air should be a full-sized poster. No text, nothing. Just that image.

I'm not a Superman fan but if I was, I'd snatch that shit up.
