Hot off his controversial role in ZERO DARK THIRTY, actor Jason Clarke has now signed on to star in director Matt Reeves' DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, joining the previous film's "star" Andy Serkis, who is returning as the Apes leader, Ceasar.  Very little is known about the plot details, but there are some tidbits to give you a picture into the direction they're going.

The story is set 15 years after the events of RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES, following two different aspects; a group of scientists (with Clarke likely to be one of them) trying to survive in post-ape-ocalyptic San Francisco and the continued struggle of Ceasar as the most intelligent of the apes.

Personally, i didn't fall head over heels in love with RISE, but it was an enjoyable enough film.  I think Matt Reeves has potential to do something cool and Clarke is inspired casting.  He's got great intensity, as demonstrated in ZERO DARK THIRTY, and having Serkis back in the "globe suit" is always a bonus to your film.

DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES is set for release on May 23, 2014.

Extra Tidbit: Do you think the absence of James Franco hurts the sequel? Or, do you think he'll reappear to some capacity?

James Franco is the most overrated piece of garbage ever to sully the silver screen. I don't understand the hype surrounding him. The guy is incapable of emoting. He's bland, his whiny voice puts me on life tilt, and he plays the same goddamn character in every movie. Jason Clarke, on the other hand, is a breath of fresh air. Guy is solid.

I'm excited for this! I guess James doesn't need to be in this, but it would be cool as an emotional story arc for ceaser and Francos character.

Nobody cares about James Franco not being in the sequel. He is no Charlton Heston & his character did not carry the story. I have always had mixed feeling about the Apes franchise. Rise was a good movie because it was about Caesar & the final 20 minutes were the most intense scenes put on film in awhile. Thats what made the movie memorable for me.

Jason Clarke is awesome and a very underrated actor. This is great casting and I guess he will be the human element of this film like Franco was in the first.

I like James Franco well enough but I didn't think he was all that great in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, so I think casting Jason Clarke for this one is a great idea. As you said inspired casting.
