Zombies for Christmas: World War Z gets a release date

Aug. 10, 2011by: Dave Davis

If you want to know exactly when the global zompocalypse will occur, here you go: December 21, 2012.

That's when the fictional outbreak known as WORLD WAR Z will hit theaters.

Based on Max Brooks' chilling book, the movie is directed Marc Forster (QUANTUM OF SOLACE) and stars Brad Pitt and the AMC trio of Bryan Cranston ("Breaking Bad"), Mirelle Enos ("The Killing") and James Badge Dale ("Rubicon", RIP), plus countless shambling undead.

The story is set in the aftermath of a war fought between humanity and a legion of flesh-eating zombies. The harrowing book was told anthology-style through a series of interviews with survivors, but the movie will feature Pitt's character as the conduit for audiences to experience the horrifying accounts.

UPDATE From Paramount's press release: "Produced by Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Colin Wilson, the screenplay is written by Matthew Michael Carnahan (State of Play) from Max Brooks best-selling novel World War Z: An Oral History of the Zombie War. Starring Pitt (Moneyball), Mireille Enos (AMCs The Killing), Daniella Kertesz in her feature film debut, James Badge Dale (The Departed) and Matthew Fox (Lost), the films Executive Producers are Forster, Brad Simpson, David Ellison, Paul Schwake, Dana Goldberg, Graham King and Tim Headington.

The story revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. Enos plays Gerrys wife Karen Lane; Kertesz is his comrade in arms, Segen."

Given the late-year release date, Paramount is perhaps hoping the material is moving and memorable enough to stick in the minds of Oscar and other award voters, or accessible enough to take full advantage of the holiday vacationing masses. Either is plausible considering the reported $125 million budget (although opening a week after part 1 of THE HOBBIT and just before Tarantino's DJANGO UNCHAINED could prove challenging).

Extra Tidbit: Would you be surprised and/or angered if WWZ ended up being PG-13? (Because it could happen...)

PG-13 zombies? That's mathematically impossible.

love the book, and yes it could be pg13 but not rated by the mpaa, say if it was on amc or FX ironically enough on tv it could get away with the gore and violence but when it is rated by that nazi controlled mpaa, pg13 is going to suck ass, and it pisses me off...

I wish I could be more stoked for this movie, I really do. I loved the shit out of the book and I've read it 4 times... but I can't see it being a great 2 and a half hour PG-13 movie. It would've worked wonderfully as an HBO mini-series... especially because of the episodic layout of some of the stories.

You know, I like the date even though I don't believe that Mayan stuff. Also, I'm praying for an R. I don't think the movie will do the book justice though.

Decent budget, but why bury it between one massive film and a fan boy darling's newest?
The book was cool, Pitt is cool, this should be a good film, just not the best release date.
And PG13 zombies? Could work, but obviously zombies and gore go together like cocaine and hookers.

The PG-13 rating...

Is supposedly the studio's intent, yes. But it was never "officially" announced to my knowledge, and could change in the year and a half before the movie is released (it's more likely that they are shooting something "harder" and will edit it down). And it's also possible the MPAA will dismiss the possibility of a PG-13 anyway, given the subject matter and the fact that they seem to make pretty arbitrary rating decisions.

They'll probably be going back-and-forth with edits until close to

They'll probably be going back-and-forth with edits until close to the release (which is why so many trailers and TV ads have the "This movie is not yet rated" stipulation even just weeks before it hits theaters), so we'll see how it goes. Still hoping for R, but accepting the possibility of PG-13.

No way this will be PG-13 it wont happen flat out. it will be "R". If hollywood can make the new dawn of the dead "R" than this should be no different. Im not worried.

It looks like they're mimicking "I Am Legend" - another PG-13 Zombie movie that came out around Christmas time. While that movie made money short term (it's pretty much forgotten now after only 4 years), movies like 28 Days/Weeks Later and Dawn of the Dead continue to bring in $$$ & get talked about after years upon years

I never said it was a bad movie, but when we're talking horror movies - specifically zombie - it doesn't even get brought up.

I Am Legend is a remake of a remake, robbg91 is absolutely correct, and the Omega Man could kick Will Smith's ass any day!

Like many of the posters below, I've already read reports that the only way the studio would allow this to get funded would be to make it PG-13, and Forster agreed to go shoot for the soft, pussy rating - much to the chagrin of Brad Pitt & Max Brooks, who both wanted an R-rating.

Not surprised by the release date, since that is supposed to be the last date on the Mayan calendar. As for the PG-13 rating....really? Do we really pay any attention to ratings in this country anymore (I mean those of us that don't have a religious axe to grind)?

Aren't there like 50 movies coming out on that Christmas?

I mean Christmas is the single biggest day for going to the movies, but still.

Just so everybody is crystal fucking clear - The Walking Dead is not PG-13. Were it released in cinemas, the level of gore would make it an instant R.
So, yeah, fuck this film.
EDIT re tidbit: Dave Davis, where have you been? It IS happening. PG-13 guarantee was the only way they received funding.

I'd be okay with PG-13

Because it would mean more exposure and more money for the franchise. It would be a challenge for the filmmakers to preserve the integrity of the plot without gore, but the plot is already kinda twisted with it being in real time instead of flashback interviews. It can still be good, I think the trick would be to make the blood/brain splatter a different color than human (if I remember from the book the 'blood' is more brown and viscous) so I think they could pull it off. I'm not worried about

I'm not worried about the rating, I'm worried about parts of the story not being told, and I doubt they'll cut out too much. I think the problem with the release date is the competition, going against The Hobbit and any movie with Johnny Depp is suicide without a good advertising campaign, make it good, Paramount!

Blu ray

Im OK with the PG13 as long as there is an unrated Blu Ray version. Which there probably will be.
