Pinhead setting bad example for kids

February 9, 2000

Source: Joey Baloney

Not sure if anybody still cares, but the HELLRAISER series is apparently still going on, with the recent launch of HELLRAISER: INFERNO on video (Read our own Arrow's positive review of that film here). But here's a very funny video of the man who plays "Pinhead" himself, hanging out on the probable set of their next adventure entitled HELLRAISER: HELLSEEKER (c'mon guys, you could come up with something more original than that, can't cha?), smoking a butt with some colleagues outside in a bathrobe. Just very weird to see. Thanks to Chris.

The "A-Team" movie

February 9, 2000

Source: Variety

Kevin Brodbin, who hates to be reminded that he wrote THE GLIMMER MAN, has been tapped to write a new script for the planned A-TEAM movie. Top Cow will produce the picture which is being described as "an action-comedy with a contemporary feel." That sounds exactly like what they said about CHARLIE'S ANGELS when that was initially announced.

Vanity Fair "Apes" pictures

February 9, 2000

Source: Movie Headlines

The latest issue of "Vanity Fair" magazine features four pictures from PLANET OF THE APES that offer more than just the usual test or promo shots we've been seeing lately. First up, is a picture of Tim Burton and a Chihuahua
bookended by two burly gorillas. Next is a picture of Mark Wahlberg as Leo getting comfortable with Helena Bonham Carter's ape princess. Next is Tim Roth not looking as cool as some other shots we've seen of his villainous Thade, but still pretty cool none-the-less (check out those teeth!). Then we see a picture of Estella Warren as Daena lounging and looking beautiful and finally a picture of Kris Kristofferson, who plays Daenna's father.

Ridley Scott's "Captain Kidd"

February 9, 2000

Source: IMDb

Director Ridley Scott (HANNIBAL) and Mega-Producer Jerry Bruckheimer (PEARL HARBOR) are planning a movie based on the story of CAPTAIN KIDD. The studio wants a cast to rival that of OCEAN'S ELEVEN and Scott and Bruckheimer are already looking at Jude Law, Alan Rickman, James Coburn and Miranda Richardson. Hmm...that cast just doesn't have the same ring-a-ding as George Clooney, Julia Roberts, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, but maybe I'm wrong.

Robbins joins Wahlberg

February 9, 2000

Source: Variety

Tim Robbins has signed on to join Mark Wahlberg and Thandie Newton in THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE, a remake of the 1963 movie CHARADE. Robbins will play Mr. Bartholomew in the thriller, which is to be directed by Jonathan Demme (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS). The original film starred Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn in the roles that Wahlberg and Newton will play.

"Almost Famous" DVD...bad news

February 8, 2000

Source: Reel.com

If you already pre-ordered your copy of ALMOST FAMOUS on DVD, you may be a little pissed by the following news. The DVD that is due on March 13th was expected to be a special edition that carried the two hour and forty minute version of the film that was trimmed down for the theaters as well as a director commentary and other goodies. But Cameron Crowe has been so preoccupied with filming VANILLA SKY with Tom Cruise that he hasn't had the time to oversee the DVD and has decided to scrap the special edition. The March 13th release will have a limited amount of special features including only a featurette and a trailer. But wait, there's more!!  Don't despair just yet, Crowe himself promised a "special edition" is in the works for release before the end of the year. He said that as soon as VANILLA SKY is finished (this summer sometime), work will commence on a director's edition.

More Jack Ryan casting...

February 8, 2000

Source: Variety

In addition to Liev Schrieber, THE SUM OF ALL FEARS may be adding Morgan Freeman and Bridget Moynahan (COYOTE UGLY) to its cast list (which also includes Ben Affleck, James Cromwell and Ron Rifkin). Freeman is in talks to play CIA agent Jack Ryan's mentor while Moynahan would play his girlfriend. Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't Jack Ryan married with a kid?

Stephen King's "Asylum"

February 8, 2000

Source: Variety

If you're scratching your head wondering when Stephen King wrote a piece called ASYLUM, give up. He didn't. For the first time, King will be adapting another writer's work into a screenplay. King has completed work on the movie adaptation for Patrick McGrath's ASYLUM, which tells the tale of a woman's doomed love affair with an inmate who murdered his wife. Director Jonathan Demme (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) is expected to direct this project after tackling the Mark Wahlberg/Thandie Newton suspense-thriller THE TRUTH ABOUT CHARLIE.

"A Knight's Tale" name change?

February 8, 2000

Source: Reel.com

In his column at Reel, Jeffrey Wells mentioned that A KNIGHT'S TALE has changed its title to IN SHINING ARMOUR. I thought this sounded suspicious (considering Sony just dropped a cool $2.5mil on a Super Bowl ad), so I did some research and it just served to confuse me more. There was official word in October from Sony that the title had in fact changed to ARMOUR, but then a mid-January statement revealed it was changed back to TALE. So where is it now? My guess is with A KNIGHT'S TALE. The pretty expensive looking website is already up and it would just be a colossal waste of money to change it at this stage of the game (although there is still a poster in my
room that reads REVENGE OF THE JEDI, so who knows). But A KNIGHT'S GAME clearly conveys the type of film we're going for here, a la GLADIATOR. The name says it all.

"Scooby" begins filming

February 8, 2000

Source: Dark Horizons

Just three more horsemen after this and it's all over. Shooting begins February 8th for the live action SCOOBY-DOO movie in Queensland, Australia, where photography has been taking place for the past week. If you'll remember Freddie Prinze Jr. showed up at the Golden Globes with a newly dyed blonde mop. Yup, that's for his role as Mysteries, Inc. ringleader Fred. I guess there's no stopping it now. Sigh.

Release date changes

February 8, 2000

Source: Joey Baloney

Here's a quick word about some changes in summer release dates. The 20th Century Fox musical MOULIN ROUGE has been moved up to May 4th from June 1st to avoid a conflict with Fox's other release planned for that day, the
thriller SQUELCH (Steve Zahn, Leelee Sobieski). The Warner Bros. western AMERICAN OUTLAWS (Colin Farrell) has been moved up to a Wednesday release of April 11th instead of the original May 18th date. Mark your calendars.

Star Wars busts!

February 7, 2000

Source: Coming Attractions

The official STAR WARS website has posted pictures of some awfully detailed busts that will be used to create Episode II action figures next year. Included are Anakin, Obi-Wan, Padme (I'd like to see Padme's bust, if you know what I mean...), Mace Windu, Count Dooku (still referred to as a "charismatic separatist", and Jango Fett (simply referred to as "Temuera Morrison's bounty hunter"). I like how Lucasfilm sneaks in these little tidbits with no announcement. Keeps us all on our toes.

"Catwoman" movie

February 7, 2000

Source: Smilin' Jack Ruby

Smilin' Jack Ruby has posted a script review of the live-action CATWOMAN movie, which he claims is in "active development" at Warner Bros. In his review, he says the script has been changed from the Selina Kyle character in BATMAN RETURNS to a teeny-bopper like character named Patience. The plot of this movie and the Catwoman story from RETURNS seem awfully similar except this character is less villian-esque. Ruby goes on to compare this
to a live action POWERPUFF GIRLS movie and mentioned it reminded him of the SCOOBY-DOO script more than a BATMAN comic. Yikes.

Schrieber joins Affleck

February 7, 2000

Source: Variety

Liev Schrieber (the SCREAM trilogy) has joined Ben Affleck in the movie adaptation of Tom Clancy's THE SUM OF ALL FEARS. Schrieber will play a CIA operative opposite Affleck's version of CIA analyst Jack Ryan, a role previously played by Harrison Ford. FEARS will be directed by Phil Alden Robinson (FIELD OF DREAMS) and shooting will begin in Montreal next month. Schrieber has also recently joined the cast of the Meg Ryan/Hugh Jackman time travel romance, KATE AND LEOPOLD.

"Alien 5" ain't happening...

February 7, 2000

Source: Variety and Coming Soon

First WILLY WONKA, now this. The mainstream press makes a mess and leaves us poor saps in the lowly internet news community to clean it up. Well, allow me to oblige. ALIEN 5 just ain't happening kids (whew!). Coming Soon
contacted Fox (something Reuters should have done in the first place) and got them to comment on the report and they said that there is no ALIEN project what-so-ever in development. Michael Fleming's column in Variety also reported that Sigourney Weaver's spokesperson has denied the rumors and claimed the quotes came from an old press junket (as we and CA told you a few days ago). So there you have it.

Stallone goes mob

February 6, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Sylvester Stallone is set to star opposite Kevin Bacon (still in negotiations) in a thriller entitled DOLAN'S CADILLAC, based on a Stephen king novelette. Stallone will play a local mob boss who gives the order to murder an innocent woman, after she witnesses a mob hit. Unfortunately for Stallone and his gang of goombahs, the husband (likely to be played by Bacon) of the dead woman ain't too happy about the situation, and is out for revenge. The film is slated to begin production in May, with writer-director Stacy Title (THE LAST SUPPER) directing from her own adaptation.

Indiana Jones 4

February 6, 2000

Source: Movie Headlines

Maybe M. Night Shyamalan made his decision after all and we just didn't hear about it. The New York Times is reporting that TRAFFIC screenwriter, Stephen Gaghan was approached to write the screenplay for INDIANA JONES 4. No word on when he was asked, but more than likely it was after he won the Golden Globe for TRAFFIC, which just may mean Shyamalan has passed. Or it may mean, that this is all just hearsay.

Final Fantasy featurette

February 6, 2000

Source: Coming Attractions

The official FINAL FANTASY website has posted a 90-second behind the scenes clip entitled THE SPIRITS WITHIN (which is also the sub-heading of the movie). It's pretty cool stuff and my anticipation for this one builds every day.

Green Goblin costume coming soon...

February 6, 2000

Source: Cinescape

No, we don't have an exclusive picture of Willem Dafoe in his Green Goblin costume for SPIDER-MAN (ahem, Sony) and we won't expect to get one any time soon. In an interview with Comics Continuum, Marvel Studios' Kevin Feige said that all involved are being ultra-secretive about the costume and its details and we shouldn't see a picture for quite some time. He also revealed that the reason we aren't seeing it, is because it isn't finished yet, saying, "They're being secretive about it until the final, final costume." C'mon JoBlo scoopers, get to work on this one and make ole' Joey Baloney proud!

Tom Cruise & Nicole Kidman split!

February 5, 2000

Source: Reuters

As a precursor to this story, I will try to refrain from any "Tom Cruise is gay" jokes.  Now, on with the story....

Are there any couples left in Hollywood?  I think it's just Chris Robinson and Kate Hudson (I still don't understand this one).  On Monday, it was announced that Tom Cruise and the woman whom he used to cover up his gay lifestyle (damn!), Nicole Kidman, had decided to separate. A statement released by their publicist said the following, "Citing the difficulties inherent in divergent careers which constantly keep them apart, they concluded that an amicable separation seem best."  They were married in 1990 and have two adopted children.

Alien 5 hubbub

February 5, 2000

Source: Reuters and Coming Attractions

Yahoo and Reuters are reporting that Sigourney Weaver has signed on to reprise her role as Ripley in a Joss Whedon (BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER) scripted fifth installment of the ALIEN saga. Problem is that these reports sound a little less than credible. Coming Attractions reports that the origin of the story came from a London tabloid, whom are historically pretty bogus when it comes to this kind of stuff. Second, it is being reported that Weaver is being paid $15 million pounds for this project. Now that works out to about $22 million dollars, which is just a bit unrealistic considering the box-office returns of the past two ALIEN movies. Finally, quotes in the tabloid are quotes that CA has from Weaver dating back to December of 1999, which really makes this sound like BS. It certainly sounds like crap to me, but I guess only time will tell.

Jodie Foster in Fincher's next

February 5, 2000

Source: Coming Attractions

Jodie Foster has left her seat high atop the Cannes Jury Panel to fill the shoes vacated by Nicole Kidman in David Fincher's THE PANIC ROOM. Reports state that Foster was rehearsing last week, while filming will begin this
week and last approximately 100 days. Kidman was forced to leave the production when a knee injury left her unable to perform the physical role. Foster reportedly beat out Angelina Jolie and Robin Wright Penn for the role. If you'll remember, Foster was originally cast in Fincher's THE GAME (and eventually sued the production company for $14.5 million) in the role that Sean Penn played.

New "Jason X" photos!

February 5, 2000

Source: Friday the 13th

The movie's been postponed a couple of times, but that's not gonna stop the Net-patrol from gathering up some cool pics of Jason in the latest installment of the series entitled JASON X. If you're interested in knowing what this one is all about, check out The Arrow's own script review below as well.

Depp and Gilliam go for a ride...

February 5, 2000

Source: The Observer

The article is entitled "My latest is a disaster movie" and it's all about director Terry Gilliam's (BRAZIL, FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS) major problems while trying to get his latest flick THE MAN WHO KILLED DON QUIXOTE starring Johnny Depp, off the ground. For anyone who still thought that movie-making was all fun and games, read the article below and be happy that we're just the schmucks who watch the films... :)

Carrey's "Majestic" girl

February 5, 2000

Source: Variety

The female role opposite Jim Carrey in Frank Darabont's THE MAJESTIC has been cast and the name may be a bit of a surprise to you. It's not Julia Roberts or Sandra Bullock or any other of the usual suspects...it's Laurie Holden?  Yup, the relatively unknown actress (except to X-Files fans who know her as the shady Marita Covarrubias) scored the lead role and beat out other name actresses vying for the part and director Darabont expects her to "blow people away." I figure in about three months we'll hear how Jim Carrey has fallen head over heals in love with Ms. Holden.  Mark my words.

More Kevin Smith news...

February 5, 2000

Source: News Askew

Kevin Smith updated his official site, View Askew, this weekend with some pretty solid info. First up were five exclusive pictures including your first picture of the monkey ("Suzanne" if you'll remember from the end of
MALLRATS) and Willem the Idiot Man-Child who appeared in pretty much all of the View Askew flicks so far (minus DOGMA). Second were some words from the man Smith himself who offered up this much on some new cast members including filming with: "Adam Corrolla (he of 'Love Lines' and 'Man Show' fame), and the ever-brilliant Jon Stewart. Really, really funny stuff. Wish I could elaborate, but I don't want to spoil anything. Next week is what
we're calling 'Chick Week' around here, as we spend the five days shooting Shannon, Eliza, Jen, and Ali Larter.
"  \Jon Stewart is filming all kinds of movies in his break from The Daily Show including this one, DEATH TO SMOOCHY and PT Anderson's X-4 Project. Pretty neat stuff shaping up here.
