| "Sum
of all Fears" press release |
March
9, 2000 |
|
Source: Paramount
Those fine folks at Paramount sent out
a press release with a little information on the upcoming Jack Ryan
thriller THE SUM OF ALL FEARS. This clears up a lot of confusion that
has revolved around certain parts of the film, including the casting
of Ben Affleck. Here is the official synopsis of the movie from the
studio: "When the President of Russia suddenly dies and is
succeeded by a man about whom little is known, tension increases as
old fears ignite new paranoia. Director of Central Intelligence Bill
Cabot (Freeman) recruits a young analyst from the Russia desk, Jack
Ryan (Affleck), to supply insight and advice. Then the unthinkable
happens: The capital of Chechnya is leveled by a nuclear bomb. America
is quick to blame the Russians, and mistrust escalates despite Ryan's
certainty that other players are at work. He is right. Terrorists bent
on provoking open war between the two nations are moving behind the
scenes to manufacture and escalate a conflict. When they successfully
detonate a second bomb outside Baltimore during the Super Bowl, the
world is pushed inexorably towards war ... unless Ryan can supply the
needed proof to stem the tide of disaster in time." Mmmmm, sounds
interesting....

Coming Soon has posted a picture of

Ford's reps are also denying that he is making too much for too little
work saying Ford is involved with every facet of production and
although he may not be on screen for that long, he will be working a
solid four and a half months on the project. Check out the picture

Source: FilmForce
A preliminary version of the
computer-animated movie SHREK (reportedly about 85% done) was screened
at the ShoWest convention in Las Vegas. A review posted at Film Force
says the movie was introduced by Jeffrey Katzenberg and was preceded
by a short documentary on the making of the film. The film itself was
described as "absolutely amazing" by the reviewer who says
that this could very well be one of the greatest animated films of all
time. From what I saw, it was rather underwhelming, but maybe I need
to see the finished product. SHREK, starring the voices of Mike Myers,
Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, hits theaters near you this summer.

Source: Variety
Benjamin Bratt needed to know by 5pm on
Wednesday evening whether he was going to get the male lead in BASIC
INSTINCT 2 so he would be available to other projects if this fell
through. Well it fell through. Despite the fact that everyone else
involved with production loved Bratt, "star" Sharon Stone
did not. So there will be no Bratt in this film. The muddled
production now sets its sights on poor Pierce Brosnan.

Attractions
Andrew Niccol's upcoming SIMONE
starring Al Pacino and Catherine Keener has finished filming but may
not see release for some time. This is because they are still hard at
work using computer graphics to create the title
character. The film revolves around a film producer (Pacino) who uses
a CGI woman in his movie. The character will not be entirely CG but a
mix between a young woman and computer graphics. The producers are
keeping the name of the model for Simone under wraps but Coming
Attractions is reporting that it is a Canadian model whose initials
are A.G. Anyone who'd like to send in a picture of this mystery model
to scoops@joblo.com is welcome
to do so. In the meantime a scooper sent in a picture I haven't yet
seen anywhere else of Al Pacino from the film. Here it is:

Security on the set of Russell Crowe's

publicly stated that they became aware of a plot to kidnap the Aussie
star. The FBI has been privy to such a plot
for some time, with undercover agents escorting Crowe to the Golden

provided security for the actor during the London premiere of PROOF OF

stole his idea for JINGLE ALL THE WAY and turned it into a successful

writer credited with the script was actually a script reader working
for Fox, who simply re-wrote the script he had sent to Fox. Officials
from Fox said that they plan to appeal the decision.

Actor Matthew Broderick has squashed
any hopes of there ever being a sequel to his 1980s classic FERRIS
BEULLER'S DAY OFF. While talking with the New Yorker, Broderick said
that shortly after the movie was released, the studio wanted to do a
sequel and there were some discussions, but nothing serious. He goes
on to say that there are no plans to see a grown-up Ferris saying it
was a "one-time event." As much as I love the original, this

Director Steven Soderbergh has decided
against using a fictional Lennox Lewis/Mike Tyson fight as a backdrop
for the film OCEAN'S 11 because he was afraid of real turmoil between
the boxers on set. The two pugilists are planning a rematch in real
life and as a result there is still some bad blood between the two.
Soderbergh was quoted as saying, "My sense was that it would not
be a tension-free set, and I believe in a tension-free set." He
has instead opted for a bout between Lewis and WBO heavyweight
champion Vladmir Klitschko.

Adam Sandler is currently in Hawaii for
filming on his top-secret collaboration with PT Anderson, still known
only as X4 PROJECT. Despite the best attempts of the crew to keep the
plot secret, word has it that Sandler and Emily Watson vacation to
Hawaii to either get married, honeymoon or divorce (or maybe all
three). Filming will take place in the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel,
the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the Honolulu Airport. Another note
mentioned in the local Hawaiian paper is that the film will be 90
minutes long. Whew! Don't think I could take three hours of Adam
Sandler.

|
Source: Reel.com
There have been reports that executives
at Fox are trying to get Tim Burton to match the big "Statue of
Liberty" ending featured in the original PLANET OF THE APES in
his "re-imagining." There seem to be a few possibilities
(and the recent news that APES will film in Washington, DC may add
another possibility) and Jeffrey Wells has listed a few that he has
heard. These may be SPOILER material (then again, they may not)
so beware. He reports that possible endings include an ape-faced
Statue of Liberty or an ape-faced Mt. Rushmore. Neither of these have
the initial OOMPH that the original APES had but maybe there's
something I don't know. Keep in mind that the new PLANET OF THE APES
is supposed to take place on another planet and NOT Earth.

Rob Zombie's horror film, HOUSE OF 1000
CORPSES was dropped by Universal Pictures after a viewing of a final
cut of the film. Universal head Stacey Snider went on record saying
"it turned out far more intense than we could have possibly
imagined...It was clear that the best version of the movie would end
up getting an NC-17 rating, and we felt that would make the marketing
and distribution of the movie impossible." Zombie himself says he
wasn't surprised at the rating, noting that other shock-horror movies
like THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE were released by small independent
studios, not large corporations. Universal has announced that it will
allow Rob to shop the film to another distributor.

Director Gore Verbinski (THE MEXICAN)

promoting his current movie, Verbinski said that his next movie will
be "a psychological thriller, sort of in the vein of
GASLIGHT." Not much else is known about the plot of the
mysteriously named PROJECT, but GASLIGHT revolves around a woman who
goes insane and Verbinski does add that Julia will "start to
loser her sanity" in the movie.
Production is scheduled to start on April 1st after Ms. Roberts wraps
her work on OCEAN'S 11. In other Julia Roberts news, did anyone else
notice that mole on her chest on the cover of Entertainment Weekly?

Miramax's teenage version of Othello,
O, has hit another stumbling block on its way to theaters with
yesterday's school shooting in California. The film, starring Julia
Stiles, Josh Hartnett and Mekhi Phifer, was originally slated for
release in October of 1999, but was postponed because of the Columbine
shootings. Because of this and the recent crackdown on movie violence,
the film postponed indefinitely and finally was rescheduled for an
April 27, 2001 release. In lieu of recent events, this date seems
highly unlikely and representatives from Miramax and Dimension Films
have refused to comment.

Source: Hollywood

BABY'S IN BLACK looks to have finally
coaxed Dustin Hoffman to join its cast, as the actor is now in final
negotiations to star in the film. The film, to be directed by Brad
Silberling (CITY OF ANGELS), follows a young man, played by Jake
Gyllenhaal, whose fiancee dies while waiting tables. The young man,
who lives with his fiancee's parents (Hoffman and Susan Sarandon),
soon falls in love with a girl whose boyfriend is missing. The
film is said to be inspired by the death of My Sister Sam star Rebecca
Schaeffer who was engaged to director Silberling when she was shot.
Sounds like it could be a really sweet film, but let's hope it doesn't
get bogged down in overdone sap like ANGELS.

conniving stranger who wishes to exploit their secret. Jay
Russell (MY DOG SKIP) is directing the Disney film from the book by

Warner Brothers with WB big-man Lorenzo DiBonaventura producing it. 4FilmMakers.com

seems pretty unlikely at this point, and that BATMAN: YEAR TWO would
also be based on the BATMAN: YEAR ONE graphic novel. Uhhhh, got all
that?!? Well, basically what it "might" mean is that the two
films will be based on the same graphic novel, whose story-line will
be split across two films. Now, don't start placing bets on this one
