"Sum of all Fears" press release

March 9, 2000

Source: Paramount

Those fine folks at Paramount sent out a press release with a little information on the upcoming Jack Ryan thriller THE SUM OF ALL FEARS. This clears up a lot of confusion that has revolved around certain parts of the film, including the casting of Ben Affleck. Here is the official synopsis of the movie from the studio: "When the President of Russia suddenly dies and is succeeded by a man about whom little is known, tension increases as old fears ignite new paranoia. Director of Central Intelligence Bill Cabot (Freeman) recruits a young analyst from the Russia desk, Jack Ryan (Affleck), to supply insight and advice. Then the unthinkable happens: The capital of Chechnya is leveled by a nuclear bomb. America is quick to blame the Russians, and mistrust escalates despite Ryan's certainty that other players are at work. He is right. Terrorists bent on provoking open war between the two nations are moving behind the scenes to manufacture and escalate a conflict. When they successfully detonate a second bomb outside Baltimore during the Super Bowl, the world is pushed inexorably towards war ... unless Ryan can supply the needed proof to stem the tide of disaster in time." Mmmmm, sounds interesting....

New Harrison Ford movie pic

March 9, 2000

Source: Coming Soon! and Cinescape

Coming Soon has posted a picture of Harrison Ford in costume from K-19: THE WIDOWMAKER. The picture was taken from a local Canadian newspaper where the movie is being filmed. Ford's reps are also denying that he is making too much for too little work saying Ford is involved with every facet of production and although he may not be on screen for that long, he will be working a solid four and a half months on the project. Check out the picture below:

"Shrek" screened at ShoWest

March 9, 2000

Source: FilmForce

A preliminary version of the computer-animated movie SHREK (reportedly about 85% done) was screened at the ShoWest convention in Las Vegas. A review posted at Film Force says the movie was introduced by Jeffrey Katzenberg and was preceded by a short documentary on the making of the film. The film itself was described as "absolutely amazing" by the reviewer who says that this could very well be one of the greatest animated films of all time. From what I saw, it was rather underwhelming, but maybe I need to see the finished product. SHREK, starring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy and Cameron Diaz, hits theaters near you this summer.

Bratt out of "Basic Instinct 2"

March 9, 2000

Source: Variety

Benjamin Bratt needed to know by 5pm on Wednesday evening whether he was going to get the male lead in BASIC INSTINCT 2 so he would be available to other projects if this fell through. Well it fell through. Despite the fact that everyone else involved with production loved Bratt, "star" Sharon Stone did not. So there will be no Bratt in this film.  The muddled production now sets its sights on poor Pierce Brosnan.

Bruckheimer gets Sports Illustrated..

March 9, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Jerry Bruckheimer and his production company Bruckheimer Films bought the rights to the Sports Illustrated article 'Higher Education' which is the story of a black basketball coach at an all-white Amish high school. The article, written by Gary Smith, appeared in the March 5th issue of the magazine. The article will be turned into a script by writer Gregory Allen Howard who wrote the similarly themed REMEMBER THE TITANS for Bruckheimer.

New movie titles

March 9, 2000

Source: Joey Baloney

Adam Sandler's upcoming animated flick, previously entitled WHITEY & DAVEY, is now known as ADAM SANDLER'S 8 CRAZY NIGHTS. I think that's a line from the now infamous "Hannukah Song." Meanwhile the spoof TEEN MOVIE has changed over to NOT ANOTHER TEEN MOVIE. Usually you tend to make titles shorter, not longer.

Source: Joey Baloney

Jennifer Love-Hewitt will be playing the Devil in the film version of the Stephen Vincent Benet story THE DEVIL AND DANIEL WEBSTER. She will join Alec Baldwin, who's also directing (yikes!), and Anthony Hopkins in the film. The film revolves around a writer (Baldwin) who sells his soul to the Devil in return for fame and fortune. Thanks to 'Anonymous B.' for the pics. Check out some exclusive pictures of Ms. Hewitt as the Devil below:

Al Pacino's new movie news & pic

March 8, 2000

Source: Coming Attractions

Andrew Niccol's upcoming SIMONE starring Al Pacino and Catherine Keener has finished filming but may not see release for some time. This is because they are still hard at work using computer graphics to create the title
character. The film revolves around a film producer (Pacino) who uses a CGI woman in his movie. The character will not be entirely CG but a mix between a young woman and computer graphics. The producers are keeping the name of the model for Simone under wraps but Coming Attractions is reporting that it is a Canadian model whose initials are A.G. Anyone who'd like to send in a picture of this mystery model to scoops@joblo.com is welcome to do so. In the meantime a scooper sent in a picture I haven't yet seen anywhere else of Al Pacino from the film. Here it is:

Kidnapped Russell Crowe?

March 8, 2000

Source: Associated Press

Security on the set of Russell Crowe's latest film, A BEAUTIFUL MIND, has been taken up a notch since the FBI publicly stated that they became aware of a plot to kidnap the Aussie star. The FBI has been privy to such a plot
for some time, with undercover agents escorting Crowe to the Golden Globes in January. The FBI also sent a head's up to Scotland Yard who provided security for the actor during the London premiere of PROOF OF LIFE. There have been no other details released and Crowe's publicist has yet to comment.

The studio stole my script and now I'm getting paid!!

March 8, 2000

Source: IMDb

Brian Webster was awarded $19 million by a jury of his peers on Tuesday, who found that 20th Century Fox stole his idea for JINGLE ALL THE WAY and turned it into a successful 1996 movie starring Arnold Schwarzenegger. His suit claimed that the writer credited with the script was actually a script reader working for Fox, who simply re-wrote the script he had sent to Fox. Officials from Fox said that they plan to appeal the decision.

No "Ferris Bueller" sequel

March 8, 2000

Source: IMDb

Actor Matthew Broderick has squashed any hopes of there ever being a sequel to his 1980s classic FERRIS BEULLER'S DAY OFF. While talking with the New Yorker, Broderick said that shortly after the movie was released, the studio wanted to do a sequel and there were some discussions, but nothing serious. He goes on to say that there are no plans to see a grown-up Ferris saying it was a "one-time event." As much as I love the original, this is probably a good thing.

No "Ocean's 11" for Iron Mike

March 8, 2000

Source: Cinescape

Director Steven Soderbergh has decided against using a fictional Lennox Lewis/Mike Tyson fight as a backdrop for the film OCEAN'S 11 because he was afraid of real turmoil between the boxers on set. The two pugilists are planning a rematch in real life and as a result there is still some bad blood between the two. Soderbergh was quoted as saying, "My sense was that it would not be a tension-free set, and I believe in a tension-free set." He has instead opted for a bout between Lewis and WBO heavyweight champion Vladmir Klitschko.

Sandler filming in Hawaii

March 8, 2000

Source: PTAnderson.com

Adam Sandler is currently in Hawaii for filming on his top-secret collaboration with PT Anderson, still known only as X4 PROJECT. Despite the best attempts of the crew to keep the plot secret, word has it that Sandler and Emily Watson vacation to Hawaii to either get married, honeymoon or divorce (or maybe all three). Filming will take place in the Kahala Mandarin Oriental Hotel, the Royal Hawaiian Hotel and the Honolulu Airport. Another note mentioned in the local Hawaiian paper is that the film will be 90 minutes long. Whew!  Don't think I could take three hours of Adam
Sandler.

"Planet of Apes" big ending...

March 8, 2000

Source: Reel.com

There have been reports that executives at Fox are trying to get Tim Burton to match the big "Statue of Liberty" ending featured in the original PLANET OF THE APES in his "re-imagining." There seem to be a few possibilities (and the recent news that APES will film in Washington, DC may add another possibility) and Jeffrey Wells has listed a few that he has heard. These may be SPOILER material (then again, they may not) so beware. He reports that possible endings include an ape-faced Statue of Liberty or an ape-faced Mt. Rushmore. Neither of these have the initial OOMPH that the original APES had but maybe there's something I don't know. Keep in mind that the new PLANET OF THE APES is supposed to take place on another planet and NOT Earth.

Spidey tragedy update

March 8, 2000

Source: Spider-Man Hype!

The man who died on the set of SPIDER-MAN on Tuesday was a 45-year old welder by the name of Tim Holcombe.  Mr. Holcombe was struck in the head by the arm of a crane which had toppled over. He was killed instantly. Production has been halted and the set has been closed for at least the next few days.

"1000 Corpses" dropped by Universal

March 7, 2000

Source: Cinescape

Rob Zombie's horror film, HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES was dropped by Universal Pictures after a viewing of a final cut of the film. Universal head Stacey Snider went on record saying "it turned out far more intense than we could have possibly imagined...It was clear that the best version of the movie would end up getting an NC-17 rating, and we felt that would make the marketing and distribution of the movie impossible." Zombie himself says he wasn't surprised at the rating, noting that other shock-horror movies like THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE were released by small independent studios, not large corporations. Universal has announced that it will allow Rob to shop the film to another distributor.

Julia Roberts' next movie is...

March 7, 2000

Source: Coming Soon! and Entertainment Weekly

Director Gore Verbinski (THE MEXICAN) is speaking out on his next project with star Julia Roberts. While promoting his current movie, Verbinski said that his next movie will be "a psychological thriller, sort of in the vein of GASLIGHT." Not much else is known about the plot of the mysteriously named PROJECT, but GASLIGHT revolves around a woman who goes insane and Verbinski does add that Julia will "start to loser her sanity" in the movie.
Production is scheduled to start on April 1st after Ms. Roberts wraps her work on OCEAN'S 11. In other Julia Roberts news, did anyone else notice that mole on her chest on the cover of Entertainment Weekly? Much like the
Mona Lisa, her mole seemed to be looking at me from every angle. Just wondering why they wouldn't airbrush that thing...

The accident happened at the former Rockwell site in Downey, CA where preparation was underway to film the "World Unity Festival" scene. No word on how this will affect the casting call for extras in this scene. More details as they arrive.

"O" No!

March 7, 2000

Source: Variety

Miramax's teenage version of Othello, O, has hit another stumbling block on its way to theaters with yesterday's school shooting in California. The film, starring Julia Stiles, Josh Hartnett and Mekhi Phifer, was originally slated for release in October of 1999, but was postponed because of the Columbine shootings. Because of this and the recent crackdown on movie violence, the film postponed indefinitely and finally was rescheduled for an April 27, 2001 release. In lieu of recent events, this date seems highly unlikely and representatives from Miramax and Dimension Films have refused to comment.

Unfortunately for him, the wolf at his door is none other than his new stepdad, Vince Vaughn. The boy claims to have witnessed a murder, but only his real dad, Travolta believes him. Teri Polo, Matthew O'Leary and Steve Buscemi also co-star in this film being shot in North Carolina right now.

Dirty Harry sequels?

March 6, 2000

Source: Dark Horizons

"So how many do you think I have left....punk?" Well, apparently DIRTY HARRY star Clint Eastwood believes that he may just have a few more left in him. Eastwood told "Film Review" magazine that: "I've liked all of my characters I've played in different ways but Dirty Harry was fun. I'd like to play him again if someone came up with a brilliant script that started with an older guy fly-fishing in a stream - the camera goes in close and you say, "Oh my god, it's Dirty Harry and he's retired!".

Clooney finds new role

March 6, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

The implosion of CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND forced George Clooney to search for another project and he has found that role. Clooney will join WELCOME TO COLLINWOOD in a supporting role, playing the part of an experienced safecracker. The film revolves around a group of blue-collar Cleveland men who band together to rob a pawn shop. The film also stars Sam Rockwell, Isaiah Washington, Luis Guzman and Jennifer Esposito and will be
produced by Clooney and Steven Soderbergh.

Dustin Hoffman joins "Baby's in Black"

March 6, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

BABY'S IN BLACK looks to have finally coaxed Dustin Hoffman to join its cast, as the actor is now in final negotiations to star in the film. The film, to be directed by Brad Silberling (CITY OF ANGELS), follows a young man, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, whose fiancee dies while waiting tables. The young man, who lives with his fiancee's parents (Hoffman and Susan Sarandon), soon falls in love with a girl whose boyfriend is missing.  The film is said to be inspired by the death of My Sister Sam star Rebecca Schaeffer who was engaged to director Silberling when she was shot.  Sounds like it could be a really sweet film, but let's hope it doesn't get bogged down in overdone sap like ANGELS.

"Tuck Everlasting" cast

March 6, 2000

Source: Cinescape

When I first heard news they were making this book into a film, I think it was the first time I had heard of it since I read it many eons ago.  I had totally forgot about TUCK EVERLASTING, but I was excited to learn about a
film project.  So far we have Alexis Bledel (from that WB show Gilmore Girls) in talks to play 10 year old Winnie, while William Hurt will play Mr. Tuck and Ben Kingsley will take on the role of the conniving stranger who wishes to exploit their secret.  Jay Russell (MY DOG SKIP) is directing the Disney film from the book by Natalie Babbit.  Now they just need to set their sites on "Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing" by Judy Blume.  Classic.

"Taxi Driver 2"? Say it ain't so...

March 5, 2000

Source: AICN

Wow. I guess if you live long enough, pretty much every classic movie in the history of cinema is going to have a mention of a sequel at some point or another, and now here it is, everybody's favorite psycho, Travis Bickle himself, with details about how he wouldn't mind "revisiting" the character after all these years. A scoopster over at AICN has said that a recent Empire Magazine interview with Robert DeNiro mentioned his interest in returning to the character after all these years, but also said that it's nothing that he's discussed with anyone yet. I really don't know what to say about this rumor other than.......wow.

Early "Pear Harbor" reviews...

March 5, 2000

Source: AICN

Early reviews for the much-anticipated Jerry Bruckheimer/Michael Bay reunion came pouring into Harry Knowles' infamous site, and the early word has been nothing but positive! The screening apparently took place in Denver, Colorado, with both big men in the crowd, and pretty much everyone agreeing that the movie kicked ass, although most had some small reservations (which is why they have these test screenings in the first place-- so they could fix 'em before the actual release date). If you want specific info from the viewers themselves, check it out below:

Let's talk about "Batman 6" now!

March 5, 2000

Source: Film Force and 4FilmMakers.com

Before production on BATMAN 5 (aka BATMAN: YEAR ONE) has even started, with director Darren Aronofsky at the reigns, word is now making its way about BATMAN 6 (aka BATMAN: YEAR TWO) as already being "in development" at Warner Brothers with WB big-man Lorenzo DiBonaventura producing it. 4FilmMakers.com is reporting that BATMAN: YEAR ONE will be released in 2002, which seems pretty unlikely at this point, and that BATMAN: YEAR TWO would also be based on the BATMAN: YEAR ONE graphic novel. Uhhhh, got all that?!? Well, basically what it "might" mean is that the two films will be based on the same graphic novel, whose story-line will be split across two films. Now, don't start placing bets on this one just yet, people...it's still early in the rumor game.

Script Review: "Planet of the Apes"

"Three Stooges": The Movie

March 5, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

And this one isn't a miniseries produced by Mel Gibson. In fact, it will the next picture (after SHALLOW HAL) to be written and directed by those wacky Farrelly brothers. Word has it that the film won't be a biopic story or
behind-the-scenes type thing, just an extended version of a new "Stooge-like" story.  Hopefully Curly Joe Besser won't be making an appearance.

Here's a little tidbit that won't interest anyone but the true movie geeks, but apparently word is out that directors Cameron Crowe and Steven Spielberg have agreed to make cameos in each other's respective movies. Crowe would theoretically show up in MINORITY REPORT starring Tom Cruise, and Spielberg would make an appearance in VANILLA SKY starring Tom Cruise. So there you go!
