| More MIB:2 cast |
March 16, 2000 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter Is it me, or are they casting Rosario Dawson in just about every movie?
The young actress who is gearing up for the release of JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS, has
been cast as the female love interest for Will Smith in the upcoming MEN IN BLACK 2.
Dawson also has the Eddie Murphy space-comedy PLUTO NASH on the way, as well as a
role in Ed Burns' ASH WEDNESDAY. Busy girl.

| Crowe vs. Spielberg |
March 16, 2000 |
| Source: Coming Attractions It looks like Steven
Spielberg is hopping mad that he may have to push back the start of MINORITY REPORT
because Tom Cruise is tied up with the overdue VANILLA SKY. Cameron Crowe's film
"has a far way to go" before it's finished and Spielberg is anxious to wrap
production on REPORT before the potential strikes in July. But reports from the set
of SKY say that this isn't Crowe's fault, but that Cruise has been reclusive, at best,
since his divorce from wife Nicole Kidman. Spielberg may also be upset that Crowe
took VANILLA SKY to Paramount instead of sticking with ALMOST FAMOUS' distributor
DreamWorks.

| Apes shocking ending revealed!! |
March 15, 2000 |
| Source: About Well, not quite. But star Michael Clarke Duncan chatted up possible
PLANET OF THE APES endings with About.com and revealed director Tim Burton's plans for a
major shocker. The burly actor said that Burton has shot about four or five
different endings (one of them most likely has to do with that mysterious APES filming in
Washington, DC) and picked the best one.
Duncan said he does know what the final ending will be but did add "I wish I could tell you, but it is so good. Take my word
for it. You will not believe it." Hopefully they'll add the unseen endings to
the DVD.

| L.A.
Confidential 2? |
March 15, 2000 |
| Source: Coming Soon James Ellroy , who wrote the novels LA CONFIDENTIAL and THE BLACK DAHLIA among
others, is set to begin writing his first ever work directly for the screen. The
original screenplay, entitled 77, is described as a complementary piece to LA
CONFIDENTIAL. The plot will follow "two events from May 1974 -- the unsolved
murder of Los Angeles police officer Mike Edwards and the nationally televised shootout in
South Central Los Angeles between the LAPD and the Symbionese Liberation Army, as they
exchanged more than 50,000 rounds of gunfire. The story will unfold through the eyes of a
pair of police partners, one black and one white." There is no word, as of yet,
if there are any directors or actors attached to the project.

| Hogan's Heroes movie? |
March 15, 2000 |
| Source: Reel Not a movie
based on the TV show but one based on the life of one of its more interesting cast
members. Jeffrey Wells is reporting that a biopic based on the life of HOGAN'S
HEROES star Bob Crane is in the works with Greg Kinnear close to signing a deal to play
the late star. The movie, tentatively titled AUTO-FOCUS, will be produced by Larry
Karaszewski and Scott Alexander (of ED WOOD and THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT fame) and will
be written and directed by Paul Schrader. The plot will focus on Crane and his
off-set homosexual relationship with a man named John Carpenter (not THE John
Carpenter!)
which ultimately ended in his mysterious death for which Carpenter was suspected but never
convicted.

| The Schmoes' Top 39 Movie Moments! |
March 14, 2000 |
Here, for your reading pleasure are the Movie Moments voted by
you as #s 39-30 (check out #49-40 lower on this page).
39) The Stonehenge debacle (THIS IS SPINAL
TAP) This scene, reportedly based on a 1984 Black Sabbath tour where the
stones were so large they couldnt fit into the arenas, and its hilariously
underwhelming 18-inch recreation of Stonehenge is easily one of the most memorable scenes
in this groundbreaking mockumentary from director Rob Reiner. The film didnt manage
to make much noise at the box office, but wound up on almost every critics top ten
list at the end of the year making a cult classic that has stood the test of time.
38) Clifford Worley goes out with style (TRUE
ROMANCE) This is really a battle
of the badasses. Youve got Dennis Hopper facing off against Christopher Walken and
in the end Walken wins, but cmon, youve got to give it to Hopper for going out
in style. How many people would have the balls to tell a racist Mafioso that his relatives
were raped by black people? I wouldve folded like a cheap suit and sold Clarence and
Alabama out after that one quick punch to the nose. Great actors, great dialogue and a
great scene.
37) Yippee-ki-yea Mutherfucker! (DIE
HARD) An action film that changed that way
action films were made. Ever since DIE HARD, every action film was described as DIE HARD
on a boat, on a plane, on a sub, or wherever the action took place. This film was also one
of the first to feature a really popular catchphrase (along with "Ill be
back") that resulted in producers forcing one-liners in their movies in the hopes of
creating another memorable "Yippee-ki-yea". Didnt work, but it sure made
Bruce Willis a star.
36) "ET, phone home
" (ET) When ET first popped out of the
cornfield at the beginning of the movie, I almost crapped my pants. I was a tender five
years of age and I remember my mother feeding me Hersheys Kisses trying to get me to
shut up. But somewhere along the way, I turned around again in my seat and by the time ET
uttered his trademark line "ET, phone home" I was crying a different kind of
tears. ET still kinda scares me, though.
35) Lloyd Dobbler holds up a boombox to Diane Courts window
(SAY ANYTHING)
So memorable they put it on the cover of the video (still no DVD
bastards!). This
scene works because its something weve all done. As a teenager (and often as
an adult) youre not always adept at saying exactly what you feel. But through music,
you can say everything youve always wanted to say but never had the courage or
wherewithal to say on your own. So when he cant quite get through to his love, Lloyd
takes his boombox and holds it as high above his head as he can and blasts Peter
Gabriels "In Your Eyes." I dont really even like that song but it
was just magic in the context of the scene.
34) The Cruise/Nicholson showdown (A FEW GOOD
MEN) Daniel Kaffee knows that if
he goes directly for Col. Jessup, hell crack. The question is whether or not
hes got the balls enough to do it. He could risk his career and potentially wind up
in jail. But theres no way Jessup is going down without a fight, especially to some
Navy boy in his "faggoty white uniform." Nicholson lost the Oscar to Gene
Hackman (UNFORGIVEN) but this is the performance that no one can forget.
33) Commodus confronts Maximus at the Coliseum (GLADIATOR) "My name is
Maximus Decimus Meridius, Commander of the Armies of the North, General of the Felix
Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor, Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son,
husband to a murdered wife. And I will have my vengeance, in this life or the next."
Hell, yeah!! You could just feel the adrenaline pumping throughout your body during this
scene (and many others) as you began to realize this wasnt your average action
movie. Honestly, how often do "action" movies get nominated for 12 Academy
Awards? Not often.
32) Roy Nearys playing with his food (CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD
KIND)
After a mysterious experience in his truck, Roy Neary, played to a tee by Richard
Dreyfuss, starts having weird visions and hearing five musical notes over and over again.
His obsession begins to take a turn for the worse during dinner one night, when he begins
to sculpt his mashed potatoes into an odd looking object. The look on Dreyfuss face
is priceless, with the tongue half sticking out and all.
31) The Chief suffocates McMurphy and escapes (ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S
NEST)
He doesnt say much the entire movie, just kinda standing around. But the sight of an
electro-shocked Jack Nicholson is too much for this Indian Chief to bear. Grabbing a
pillow and smothering the life out of a vegetable of a man just seems like exactly what
McMurphy wouldve wanted. Then he finally rips that water fountain out, puts it
through a window and hes gone. Powerful stuff.
30) Ted Stroehmann gets his manhood caught in a
zipper (THERES SOMETHING ABOUT MARY) I wish the first time I had seen this
movie I was able to hear the dialogue in this scene. But the laughter in the theater was
so loud you couldnt hear a damn thing. A hilarious scene that spawned a whole bunch
of rip-offs and took the careers of Ben Stiller, Cameron Diaz and the Farrelly Brothers to
a whole new level. Just the thought of Marys father asking, "Is it the frank or
the beans?" still cracks me up.
Stay tuned for numbers 29-20!

| Hayek,
Norton, Rush, Judd and more... |
March 14, 2000 |
| Source: Coming Attractions Oscar-nominated actor Geoffrey Rush has joined the cast of the
Frida Kahlo biopic, FRIDA, as good ole Leon Trotsky. He joins Salma Hayek who plays the
title role, her dude Edward Norton, Antonio Banderas, Ashley Judd and Alfred Molina in the
story of Kahlo, a Mexican painter and her relationship with Diego Rivera (Banderas). The
film will be directed by Julie Taymor who previously directed the Broadway version of THE
LION KING. Word on the street is that this may include some more lesbian scenes for
Salma

| Williams
joins Pacino |
March 14, 2000 |
| Source: Variety Maybe it's because hes still thinking about BICENTENNIAL MAN. Robin Williams
is set to join Al Pacino and Hilary Swank in the thriller INSOMNIA. The film will be
directed by Christopher Nolan, hot off his expected success with MEMENTO (I still
havent seen this yet
hint, hint
*cough*sendmeapromocopy*cough*) and should
start filming in April. Williams will play a killer trying to blackmail Pacino into
pinning his crimes on a poor innocent soul. Ive got to give Robin credit for at
least trying to dig his way out of those terrible films hes been stuck in
lately. Did you hear that Arnold? Mel? Anyone??

| Clint's Mystic River |
March 14, 2000 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter Mr. Clint Eastwood has signed on to direct the movie MYSTIC RIVER based on the
book with the same name by Dennis Lehane. Heres a little write-up on the plot; it
revolves around "three childhood friends called Sean, Jimmy and Dave. Their
relationship ends when one of the boys is kidnapped. Twenty-five years later, the men are
reunited and become linked by a murder investigation after Jimmy's oldest daughter is
killed." Currently there are no stars yet attached to the project.

| Puddy joins MIB:2 |
March 13, 2000 |
| Source: About.com In a interview with About.com, Patrick
Warburton, from the
upcoming live-action TICK TV show and probably best known as Puddy from
SEINFELD, revealed
he has been offered the role as Will Smiths sidekick in MEN IN BLACK 2. The actor
says that director Barry Sonnenfeld (who is producing THE TICK) approached him about
taking on the role of "Will Smiths first partner since Tommy Lee Jones"
while filming their television show. Warburton will start filming the role this summer and
producers are eyeing a July 3rd, 2002 release date.

| Gwyneth's getting fat |
March 13, 2000 |
| Source: Empire Online I know this sounds more like a headline youd expect to read on the
National Enquirer but its probably not what you think. Gwyneth has joined the cast
of the Farrelly Brothers next directorial effort SHALLOW HAL (also starring Jack
Black and Garry Shandling) and will play a not-so-slim love interest. Bobby Farrelly spoke
of the film in a recent interview: "Hal (Black) is this incredibly shallow
guy
later he meets a hypnotist who puts a spell on him and he begins to see the inner
beauty of people. He meets this girl who everyone else sees as rather unattractive. But he
sees Gwyneth Paltrow, because she's such a wonderful person on the inside, and he falls
madly in love with her. Then the spell gets lifted, and what we do here is put Gwyneth in
a big prosthetic suit like Eddie Murphy in The Nutty Professor. She's this big fat girl
and he has to decide whether he still loves her for who she is." Farrelly also
revealed that theyre shooting for a PG-13, unlike their usual raunchy fare. In other
Gwyneth news, did anyone catch Inside the Actors Studio on Sunday? Is she cute or
what??

| Bratt skips "Instinct" for "Abandon" |
March 13, 2000 |
| Source: Cinescape Mr.
Julia Roberts, Benjamin Bratt, has moved on rather quickly after being unceremoniously
dropped for consideration to co-star in BASIC INSTINCT 2. The actor has signed on to star
in ABANDON with Katie Holmes for first-time director Stephen Gaghan, who wrote TRAFFIC.
ABANDON revolves around a student (Holmes) with recurring visions of a late boyfriend
leading her to believe she may have had something to do with his mysterious disappearance.
Bratt will take on the role of a detective working on the case. Filming is scheduled to
begin in April in Montreal. No word on whether Katie Holmes will whip out those beautiful
cans again, but heres to hoping.

| Planet of the Abes |
March 13, 2000 |
| Source: Movie Headlines Pulitzer Prize winner Doris Kearns Goodwins biography on Abraham
Lincoln hasnt even been published yet, and DreamWorks has already snatched up the
film rights. The film version of the book (which looks like it wont be published
until late 2002) may be directed by the Beard himself, Steven Spielberg. DreamWorks paid
an "undisclosed sum" for the rights to the book which will focus on Honest
Abes years as President (161-1865).

| The
"Knight Rider" movie |
March
12, 2000 |
|
Source: Cinescape
David Hasselhoff participated in an
online chat a few days back, where he revealed that there was a
feature film based on his hit television show, KNIGHT RIDER, in the
works. Here's the word on the plot from the man himself;
"Michael will be brought "out of retirement after being
frozen, because he was injected with a fatal poison. Devon, who is now
the great-great-grandniece of Devon, Michael's boss and mentor, is now
running the Foundation for Law and Government, which is called FLAG.
She, with her new partner (a very young Michael Knight type), will
team up with the original Michael Knight and the new K.I.T.T. to carry
on what will be the Knight Rider 3000 in the future."

| THE
TOP 49 MOVIE MOMENTS! |
March
12, 2000 |
|
Source: Joey
Baloney
Well, the votes are in and the tallying
is done. If you're asking why there are only 49 Movie Moments, it's
because at the end of the counting about a hundred films were tied
with two votes. And to try to pick one out of all of them was just
gonna be too difficult. So we left it at that. But here are moments
number 49-40 with installments of ten coming through the rest
of the coming week or so. All ties were broken by JoBlo staffers but
remember folks...these are your picks! So if you don't like them, take
it up with your fellow man on
the boards. And keep in mind, I don't necessarily agree with all
these choices and in some rare cases, haven't even seen the movie. So
be nice to me.
49) Hanks and Co. storm the beach (SAVING
PRIVATE RYAN) - One of the greatest war scenes ever filmed.
And it didn't even win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. I still
have visions of that guy searching (and finding) his
missing arm and the poor sap who thinks his helmet saved his life.
Dark, dank, gritty with wonderful cinematography, you could feel the
wet sand from the beach on your skin just as you sat in the theater.
It is a scene that will stay with you long after the end credits begin
to roll.
48) Chariot racing gets down and dirty (BEN-HUR)
- About one year ago I stood at the site in Rome where they filmed the
chariot racing sequences at Circus Maximus and it looked so
unimpressive. It made me realize that the effort laid forth by the
filmmakers was one not to be taken lightly. A scene way ahead of its
time that still influences the way chase scenes are shot to this day
(not to mention GLADIATOR).
47) A horse's head in bed (THE
GODFATHER) - I am about to make a startling revelation to
thousands of strangers. I have never seen THE GODFATHER. Wait,
wait!!! Before you all call for my head, hear me out. I haven't
seen
this movie and even I know this is one of the greatest movie moments.
Just think of the effort it would take to cut a horse's head off and
place it in someone's bed. It says so much more than just killing the
horse.
46) The Scots moon their enemy (BRAVEHEART)
- You're expecting the beginning of a giant battle with the English
facing off against the Scots. Instead, the spearmen of William Wallace
lift their kilts and bare their pale white
asses to Lord Talmadge and the English. Before you're done laughing
there's some good old fashioned battlin', as William Wallace said
"For Scotland!" I particularly wouldn't have voted for this
one (at all) but hey, this is your list.
45) Ash cuts his own evil hand off (EVIL
DEAD 2) - The idea of making a sequel to a horror movie and
playing it for laughs is a pretty damn good one. Especially when
you've got Bruce Campbell on your side. A natural comic actor (and a
damn fine dramatic one, too), Campbell pulls off a scene where he
fights his possessed hand masterfully. The best part for me, is
while he's chainsawing his own hand off and says, "Who's laughing
now? Who's laughing now?!"
44) Bohemian Rhapsody (WAYNE'S WORLD)
- This movie took one of the most peculiar rock songs of all time and
sent it to Number One on the Billboard charts a good 17 years after it
was first released. It hinted at the genius of Mike Myers in an often
copied sequence and became the inspiration for many commercials
including the Volkswagen "Mr. Roboto" sing-a-long.
43) An empty plastic bag, twirls
around and around...(AMERICAN BEAUTY)
- A strange young boy captures the image of an empty plastic bag stuck
in a mini-tornado twirling around and around in the autumn wind. What
a beautiful image and a powerful metaphor for Lester Burnham and the
doomed life he was leading. Just think of this playing back on that
grainy videotape and picture Ricky Fitts saying "sometimes
there's so much beauty in the world I feel like I can't take it, like
my heart's going to cave in." Now that's beautiful.
42) Carrie's hand reaches of the
ground (CARRIE) - I was wearing my
popcorn at the end of this one. I had figured the movie was all but
over and I thought, "OK, that was pretty cool." And then the
hand of a dead Carrie White thrust from the ground and grabbed Amy
Irving and I jumped about twenty feet in the air. Regardless of the
fact that it was only a dream, it remains a creepy end to a really
creepy movie.
41) I'm having chestpains... (ALIEN)
- Every one is sitting around enjoying a meal while poor Kane is
trying to recuperate from having some sort of alien parasite stuck to
his face. Then he begins to cringe. And scream. And the rest of the
crew is looking on with the same face that the audience wears as a
small alien breaks through the poor man's chest and scampers away.
After watching this, I thought long and hard every time I had a
stomach ache.
40) Howard Beale breaks down on
air (NETWORK) - Just one line sums
this scene up. A wet, deranged news anchor is looking into a camera to
all the viewers watching stunned at home, pleading with them to join
him screaming "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take this
anymore!" A classic line from a classic movie and a moment
that anyone who has ever scene cannot forget.
Stay tuned for numbers 39-30!

| Kevin
Smith's "Green Arrow" movie? |
March
12, 2000 |
|
Source: FilmForce
Whether writer/director Kevin Smith
will be involved in the film version is one thing, but producers in
Hollywood are taking notice of Smith's sellout run writing GREEN ARROW
and are already in negotiations to bring his version to the screen.
Warner Bros. owns DC Comics so one would imagine that the WB would be
involved in one way or another with any version of the comic book.
Unfortunately, Kevin Smith doesn't have a whole lot of luck getting
comics made into movies (i.e., SUPERMAN LIVES, PREACHER).
