| Streep
and Cruise hook up... |
March 23, 2000 |
Source: VarietyNow that production has finally
begun on MINORITY REPORT, we can get down to the nitty-gritty. And that includes a
just announced cameo from Academy Award winner Meryl Streep. The star will play a small
role in the film, which started production on March 22nd. She joins Tom Cruise,
Colin Farrell, Samantha Morton, Peter Stormare and others in the film based on the novel
by the same name and directed by Steven Spielberg.

| Is Whitney Houston really in talks for Bond? |
March 23, 2000 |
| Source: USA Today Reports came out on
Wednesday from a London tabloid (and we all know how reliable they are!) that claimed
Whitney Houston was in talks to be the next Bond girl. I immediately blew this story off,
filing it in the same mental drawer as the Sigourney Weaver/ALIEN 5 story from a while
back. But now, it turns out that there is some truth to this report as producers are
meeting with Houston to discuss numerous projects, one of which is the next Bond film. The
report was confirmed by both MGMs and Houstons spokespeople but they stress
that they are in very preliminary discussions. I wonder if Bobby Brown will play the
villain in this one...as well...

| The
Schmoes' Top 49 Movie Moments! |
March 23, 2000 |
We're almost there!...The top ten moments are only a few days away but to wet your
appetite for more movie moments, I present to you the moments you voted to be #'s 19-11.
Enjoy!!19) The bank robbery (HEAT) - One of the most realistic gun fight scenes
every put to film. The sound of the bullets being fired off round after
round, is just
deafening, and the mere sight of all these great actors in snazzy suits, sky masks and
extreme fire-power, is invigorating, to say the least. If you ever want to feel like
you're caught in the middle of an actual gun skirmish, rent this movie, shut the lights,
wear a ski mask and turn the volume to "KICK MY ASS", and enjoy the thunder that
follows.
18) The opening sequence (SCREAM) One of the most influential movies of the
1990s that managed to reinvent the "masked killer" genre of movies; one which
was ironically close to its own grisly death. This scene so perfectly set the tone for the
rest of the movie, combining suspense, gore and humor along with a performance from Drew
Barrymore that gave her career a well-needed boost from the Amy Fisher TV movies she was
relegated to.
17) Alex gets brainwashed to Beethoven (A CLOCKWORK
ORANGE) Talk about cruel and
unusual punishment. When the sounds of Beethoven (one of the only other things besides
violence our humble narrator enjoys) are combined with graphic scenes of violence and extreme
physical agony to condition Alex against committing violent acts, there are some
unfortunate side effects. Most notably a run-in with a former victim who uses Beethoven as
a tool of revenge, driving Alex to attempt to commit suicide. Then of course theres
the stunning visual of Alex with his eyes pried open and a look of sheer terror on his
face. But then what else besides "stunning visuals" would you expect from
Stanley Kubrick?
16) Ripley fights back with the power loader (ALIENS) Girl Power! I
wouldnt be able to walk in one of those power loaders, let alone kill a mother alien
with one. Director James Cameron gives us one of the very few sequels superior to its
predecessor and, in what has become a trademark of his, a strong female figure (Ripley,
Sara Connor, Dark Angel, Leonardo DiCaprio). Go rent the DVD and behold truly one of the
greatest catfights ever put to film (plus the truly classic "Bitch!" line).
15) Capt. Willards head rises out of the water (APOCALYPSE
NOW) I swear to
you (and keep in mind I was barely a teenager and no nuclear scientist) the first time I
saw this movie, I thought it was a documentary for at least a good hour or so. Thats
how realistic it seemed to me. But still now, watching Martin Sheen arise from the murky
depths of the water with The Doors "The End" in the background, I
can't help but remember it as one of my
favorite movie going experiences. Some called this movie pretentious but I just think
its a pretty damn good movie!
14) The Deathstar explodes (STAR WARS) Good old Red 5 (with a little help from
Han) manages to put a little dent in the side of the Deathstar, much to the chagrin of
papa-to-be Darth Vader. I love this scene, cause its just one of those get up and
cheer type moments that you just dont see a lot of these days (with the exception of
GLADIATOR). Unfortunately, George Lucas didnt create as memorable a moment with his
subsequent racing sequence in THE PHANTOM MENACE. Theres always next time
13) The 8 rules of Fight Club (FIGHT CLUB) This movie didnt do much at the
box office and its not surprising. It takes at least three viewings before it
starts to sink in that this is a modern classic. FIGHT CLUB is not a movie for everyone,
and I can admit that the first time I saw it, I didnt care much for it. But
subsequent viewings revealed layers upon layers of genius which I had totally missed the first time
around. Like Pitt and Norton say on the DVDs commentary track, this is the best film
that either of them have ever done and will ever do.
12) Darth Vader tells Luke his fathers identity (THE EMPIRE STRIKES
BACK)
If you spoke German you probably couldve figured this out before EMPIRE, but I would
say that most people were surprised when they found out the news (especially Luke). In a
related story, my wifes pregnant and I have given serious consideration to the name
Luke, just so I could say "Luuuke, I am your father
" That joke would never
get old.
11) "Heeeeeres Johnny!" (THE
SHINING) Legend has it that Jack
Nicholson improvised this classic line and thats just so Jack. The first time I saw
this movie (I was 10, mind you) I didnt sleep for about a week. And when I did
finally sleep, I had nightmares of Jack axing my door down and me not being able to fit
out the window. I must not forget to mention the terror in Shelley Duvalls eyes.
Scary stuff.

| Spielberg,
King and Barker take on SciFi |
March 22, 2000 |
| Source: Variety The SciFi channel has managed to seal deals
with Steven Spielberg, Stephen King and Clive Barker to bring three new telefilms to the
cable network. Spielberg will be working on an epic alien abduction mini-series called
TAKEN, which will, all told, run 20 hours in length. King will work on a sequel to his
FIRESTARTER (which previously starred Drew Barrymore) to air as miniseries, that will
chronicle events that took place 20 years after the first film/book. Barker will prep his
SAINT SINNER (once a Marvel comic) which revolves around a 19th century monk
who must track down demons who he brought to modern day Los Angeles.

| All's well with Cruise, Crowe and Spielberg |
March 22, 2000 |
| Source: NY Post The New York Post has gracefully retracted
their report of the tension growing between the production of VANILLA SKY and the
subsequently delayed production of MINORITY REPORT. They received a statement from
Paramount representative Rob Friedman dismissing these claims saying that SKY
"wrapped Saturday" and that "everybody is happy." Both camps are
insisting that the minor delays that Cruise and Crowe incurred while filming VANILLA SKY
were of no consequence to Spielberg and MINORITY REPORT, which will begin production now
that Cruise is available.

Hollywood Pictures release JUST VISITING I thought Id pass along. The film, starring
Christina Applegate, Jean Reno and Tara Reid, is a remake of the 1993 French comedy
"Les Visiteurs". It basically revolves around some knights from the 12th
century who accidentally travel back in time to Chicago where they meet a descendant who

yes, back to the future. Check out some exclusive pics below from

| Fincher,
Lee and Frankenheimer team for "Hire" |
March 21, 2000 |
| Source: Variety Coming this April to theaters, DVDs and the
website BMWfilms.com, are a series of short films collectively titled THE HIRE and
directed by Ang Lee, John Frankenheimer and Hong Kongs Wong Kar-Wai and produced by
David Fincher. The films, which are financed by BMW and produced by Finchers
Anonymous Content production company, will actually be advertisements but more cinematic
in nature than your traditional commercial (think the Tarsem directed Nike soccer ads).
The films will revolve around a recurring character played by Clive Owen (CROUPIER, THE
BOURNE IDENTITY) who you can currently see on the teaser page posted on BMWfilms.com.
Frankenheimers film will be the first to be released and will be followed by
Lees and Kar-Wais.
Frankenheimer spoke with Variety about the project and said, "This film has huge
action elements as well as a clever personal story." Lee also spoke about the project
saying that, "all those fast cars are definitely making me look cooler in front of my
kids," while his writing partner James Schamus adds that the reason for making the
films was "basically, we havent been paid in two years." That should all
change for Lee as he prepares to film THE HULK and is the odds-on leader to win an Academy
Award on Sunday. Here are some exclusive pictures from the set of THE HIRE to tide you
over until April. Thanks to 'Big Daddy Don Bodine' for the pics:

| Tarantino
& "The Vega Brothers" |
March 21, 2000 |
| Source:
CHUD According to the funky dudes over at CHUD,
"New York Magazine is reporting that John Travolta and Michael Madsen
have signed on to star in a project to be written and directed by Quentin
Tarantino titled THE VEGA BROTHERS." As you psycho Tarantino fans
already know, this project has been talked about for years, as John
Travolta's character from PULP FICTION, named Vincent Vega, and Michael
Madsen's character from RESERVOIR DOGS, Mr. White aka Vic Vega, were in
fact brothers. The film will obviously be a prequel and shot after
Tarantino finishes his current production of KILL BILL, starring Uma
Thurman.

| Jackman talks X-Men sequel |
March 21, 2000 |
| Source: Coming Soon Hugh Jackman, who just finished SOMEONE LIKE YOU (formerly ANIMAL
HUSBANDRY) with Ashley Judd, took some time to speak with The Chicago Sun-Times
Cindy Pearlman on the status of X-MEN 2. The star revealed a script is being turned in to
Fox executives this week and that a tentative shooting date is set for January, 2002. When
confronted about Wolverines possible "romance" with Jean Grey, Jackman
said "I think Old Wolfie gets a few romantic possibilities in the sequel
He
doesn't want to narrow it down to one X-Woman. He's a little afraid of commitment."

| John Woo/Harrison Ford project? |
March 21, 2000 |
| Source: Variety Warner Bros. will pay screenwriter Andrew
Marlowe (who would like you to forget he wrote END OF DAYS) $750,000 to write a script for
an as-yet-untitled project, to star Harrison Ford, directed by John Woo, and featuring a
bunch of flying doves. Marlowe pitched the idea to Ford who loved the idea and was able to
convince Woo to direct, pending approval of the script. Ford is currently sleeping on a
bed of $100 bills in Canada while filming K-19 and Woo is finishing up post-production on
WINDTALKERS.

| More Deeds casting |
March 21, 2000 |
| Source: Variety Joining Adam Sandler and Winona Ryder in the upcoming comedy
DEEDS will be veteran actor Peter Gallagher and Jared Harris (I SHOT ANDY
WARHOL). The
film will begin shooting next week, mere days after Sandler wraps filming on PT
Andersons JUST DESSERTS. The film, written by Steven Brill (who will also direct)
and Tim Herlihy (the man behind the hilarious "Herlihy Boy" sketches on
SNL,
featuring Sandler and Chris Farley) will be loosely based on the Frank Capra movie, MR.
DEEDS GOES TO TOWN. The plot revolves around a country boy named Deeds (Sandler) who
inherits a multi-billion dollar company from his deceased uncle. When Deeds packs up and
leaves for the big city, he runs into trouble, but eventually finds love with a tabloid TV
reporter (Ryder) out to paint him as a deranged lunatic. This looks like more of a return
to the usual Sandler fare after that bizarre, bizarre sounding Anderson feature.

| Sandler/PTA
movie plot |
March 20, 2000 |
| Source: Variety Variety has posted a plot summary for the upcoming Adam Sandler/PT Anderson
collaboration. I must admit it was nothing like what I thought it was going to be.
Here's the word: " Sandler
plays the owner of a phone-sex business that is slowly failing; as a result, three thugs
are sent out to get him. Meanwhile, his sister tries to set him up on a blind date with a
character played by Academy Award nominee Emily Watson. Sandler is uninterested, but ends
up meeting her by chance. Later, Sandler's character grows obsessed with saving
coupons from a pudding company that's offering frequent flyer miles with every purchase,
and eventually he earns enough miles to take a trip around the world. But he can't forget
the mysterious woman who, he learns, has left for a vacation in Hawaii. With his life in
turmoil, Barry uses his coupons for a trip to Hawaii to find her." Still no
word on a title, but don't believe anyone who tells you this project is the old KNUCKLE
SANDWICH script that Moriarty at AICN reviewed a while back. T'aint.

| Stan Winston interview |
March 20, 2000 |
| Source: Cinescape Cinescape has posted some bits from an interview with FX legend Stan Winston,
in which he drops some nuggets about the upcoming JURASSIC PARK 3. Stan discusses
how Alan Grant (Sam Neill reprising his role from the original) returns to the island and
is attacked by the new Spinosaurus (described as "bigger and meaner and badder"
than the T-Rex), the flying Pteranodons and of course...the Raptors. Winston says
that the Pteranodons will be more complex than any other previous dino "because of
the combination of animatronics, men in suits
[and] wings that are beyond what we've done." Expect the JURASSIC PARK 3
trailer to be hitting the net and your local multiplex any day now....

| Roach still directing Hitchhiker's |
March 20, 2000 |
| Source: Inside FilmForce reported last week that director Jay Roach (AUSTIN POWERS, MEET THE
PARENTS) was out as the director of the acclaimed novel THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE
GALAXY and in was director Michel Gondry (HUMAN NATURE). Well Roach himself spoke
with Inside and debunked those rumors saying "It's not true...unless there's an
elaborate conspiracy I'm not aware of!" He added that he's currently working
with author Douglas Adams on developing the movie while staying faithful to the original
work.

| The
Schmoes' Top 49 Movie Moments |
March 20, 2000 |
Because you're all so wonderful and because I've been threatened
with physical violence, here are Movie Moments #'s 29-20 on the Top 50 list.29) The whole movie (ARMY OF DARKNESS) Unfortunately it was impossible
to pick a scene from this movie to include, because everyone who voted for it, voted for a
different moment. But the movie in general got so many votes, that it was
simply impossible to
ignore. So we will honor this classic as one giant great movie moment.
28) "You talkin to me?" (TAXI DRIVER)
De Niro at his finest. Yet another case of a memorable moment being improvised on
set. This is just a testament to what a great acting/directing team youve got with
De Niro and Scorcese. And really, who hasnt stood in front of their mirror and said
the lines at least once? Not that I have, but I hear lots of other people
dabbled
27) Private Pyle finally loses it (FULL
METAL JACKET) I hate to say it, but I could totally relate to Pyle
in this movie. I felt so bad for him and you know things are going to go badly when
Vincent DOnofrio just starts staring insanely into space. This was the first time I
had ever seen brains on screen and it creeped me out for a long time. Stanley "The
Master" Kubrick does his thing once again, in probably his most under-appreciated
movie.
26) The Knights Who Say "Ni" (MONTY PYTHON AND THE HOLY GRAIL) Funny
stuff here, kids and thats saying a lot, cause not many comedies made the list, this
go round. If there had to be a comedy to make any "best of" list, it would
always be this one. The quintessential comedy that stoners and intellectuals could both
enjoy. The film is just packed with hilarious moments, but this was the one you guys chose
as the best (and a damn fine choice at that).
25) Hannibal relates his meeting with a census worker (SILENCE OF THE LAMBS) Another revelation for the
readers of JoBlo
I didnt like this movie. I am probably the only person on the
face of the Earth, but I just didnt care much for it. But, despite not liking the
movie as a whole, I did enjoy Hannibal slowly tearing into Clarice, calling her "poor
white trash" and responding to her requests to fill out a questionnaire by telling
her (in a ultra-classic line) that "a census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans
and a nice chianti... Fly back to school, little Starling." Hannibal 1,
Clarice 0.
24) Quints USS Indianapolis speech (JAWS)
- Quint's monologue recounting the tragedy surrounding the U.S.S. Indianapolis, which was
sunk by Japanese torpedoes, and how its crew was left to fend off scores of hungry
sharks, was Steven Spielbergs favorite scene in this movie. Robert Shaw was not
Spielbergs original choice for Quint but its hard to see any other actor
playing this role, especially considering Shaw wrote the dialogue for this scene himself,
after screenwriters Peter Bentley and Carl Gottlieb couldnt get it right.
23) The T-1000 chases John and The Terminator through LA (TERMINATOR
2) Now this is the stuff that Jim Cameron needs to get back
to!
Nothings cooler than watching Robert Patrick crash through concrete in a Mack truck
chasing Arnie and Eddie Furlong on a motorcycle. I still get a kick out of Ah-nuld pulling
out that shotgun and twirling it all around with one hand. I just hope they dont
piss on this series by making an inferior TERMINATOR 3.
22) One Last Thing (Long Way Down) (BOOGIE NIGHTS)
Youve seen Dirk Diggler make his way from busboy to Adult Film Superstar and
now this. Like the title card says, it sure is a loooong way down. Alfred Molinas
Rahad is one of the most memorable characters from the movie, despite his minimal
screentime (will you ever think of "Sister Christian" the same way again?) and
the use of firecrackers to heighten the suspense during this scene was genius (although
admittedly stolen from another movie) and makes you as nervous as you know Dirk, Reed and
Todd are
.well, maybe not Todd. If you havent seen the BOOGIE NIGHTS DVD, get
to your nearest video store and take a listen to the Directors Commentary for this
scene. Fantastic.
21) "Funny how?" (GOODFELLAS)
This scene pretty much won the Oscar for Joe Pesci. Not that the rest of
his performance wasnt fantastic, but its a case where one line
more or less transcends an
entire performance. Overlooked in this scene is how great Ray Liottas fumbling and
bumbling is, trying to talk himself out of quite a hole he dug...<"You
think I never dug a hole before!"- 'nother great line>
20) The T-Rex makes its first appearance (JURASSIC PARK)
Every once in a while, Ill put on my JURASSIC PARK DVD, skip right to this
scene, crank up the volume and enjoy the carnage. Especially the T-Rex roar
man, I
love that! Spielberg does a fantastic job introducing one of the most ferocious animals in
history and he sure doesnt disappoint. Every time I see the cup of water with the
vibration ripples, I still get giddy with anticipation. But then again, I was never
trapped underneath a car by a dinosaur foot.
Stay tuned for numbers 19-11!

| "X-Men
2" characters? |
March 19,
2000 |
| Source:
Guerilla Film
It looks like fan-favorite Gambit, may not be included in the X-MEN sequel after all. The trench coat wearing, New Orleans mystery man was widely considered a front-runner for the sequel but reports say that the character’s overall resemblance to Wolverine preclude any appearance in X-MEN sequels. Beast seems to be a lock, considering he almost made the first film, while
Nightcrawler, Angel and Colossus have also been discussed. The report, which originally appeared at Guerilla Film, also notes that Magneto will again be the main villain with The Sentinels taking a major supporting role. Interestingly enough, their source said that, "There is so little activity going on with X-MEN 2 right now, everything's in a holding pattern."

| "Spawn" Sequel Pitch |
March 19,
2000 |
| Source:
Ain't It Cool News
AICN is reporting that the official site for SPAWN has revealed the direction for the sequel that they have pitched to Sony. They report
says that SPAWN will be a character like JAWS, where the action happens around that character not necessarily always including that character. Detectives Sam and Twitch will be more of the traditional main characters, as we follow them in their attempts to clean up the streets in the city they live.
Another cool thing is that they mention how we will never see a full shot of SPAWN but rather that he will be kept in the shadows as a mysterious figure haunting so many criminals. Could be a really interesting take on the comic if it’s treated right...

| Del
Toro, Binoche, Rush... |
March 19,
2000 |
| Source: Jam!
Showbiz What do you get when you slap three of this year's
"Best Actor/Actress" nominees, Benicio Del Toro, Juliette
Binoche and Geoffrey Rush, into a film written by Anthony Minghella,
director of the Oscar-fave THE ENGLISH PATIENT? Uuuuuuhmmmm, let me guess
here....another Oscar movie?! With Chloe Sevigny, another past Oscar
nonimee for BOYS DON'T CRY, also in final negotiations to star in the
film, the as-yet-untitled film based on the novel "The Assumption Of
The Virgin," is definitely starting to look like a winner. The film
is to be directed by and will CENTRAL STATION's Walter Salles and tells
the story of the relationship between the painter Fra Lippa (Del Toro) and
the torrid romance he shared with his model, a nun (Binoche).
