Aronofsky and Pitt to team

April 5, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Darren Aronofsky is hard at work writing a science fiction epic that he plans to direct with Brad Pitt "in serious negotiations to star" in the project. Aronofsky is working on this film with Warner Bros. with whom he is also prepping BATMAN: YEAR ONE with Frank Miller.  The plot of the film was not released as Pitt and Aronofsky are both looking to keep details on a need-to-know basis, and frankly we don't need to know. The director and the star have had several meetings about the project and are both looking forward to working together.

Walken stars in Country Bears

April 5, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Christopher Walken has joined the cast of Disney's THE COUNTRY BEARS, which also stars a bunch of animatronic bears. Walken will play the film's villain (well, duh...how about we get Chris a role where he's not an evil villain?  I personally want to see the Christopher Walken romantic-comedy), Reid Thimple, a banker looking to demolish the Country Bear Hall,  presumably the place where the Country Bear Jamborees take place.  Haley Joel Osment and Charles Dutton are among the stars lending their voices to the aforementioned animatronic bears. The film began production last March and is gunning for a spring 2002 release date.

Star Wars 2 title rumors.........again.....

April 5, 2001

Source: The Force and Ain't It Cool News

Sigggghhhhhhh. I really wish George Lucas would post the official title of EPISODE 2 on the STAR WARS website already and get all of this speculation over with! The latest reports come from the UK, where George Lucas was interviewed by the Movie Chart Show (interesting title ...) and didn't mention one thing about the title.  BUT, the host of the show said in his introduction to the taped interview that EPISODE 2 was "tentatively dubbed THE SHADOW FALLS." Harry at AICN was quick to hop on this story, reminding us all that he called this months ago.  Problem is that Harry's scoop was most likely the source of the host's information.  Another problem is that theshadowfalls.com and all related domain names are all available for purchase.

Miramax to make "Chicago" movie

April 5, 2001

Source: Variety

Miramax is finally ready, after years of delays, to begin work on a big-screen version of the Broadway hit, CHICAGO.  The Weinsteins have a brand new script from Oscar winner Bill Condon and a deal with Rob Marshall (ANNIE) to direct.  Producers are looking at stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Nicole Kidman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz and Madonna (is it me or does every producer look at these actresses to star in their movies?). CHICAGO takes place in the 1920s and revolves around Velma and Roxie, a vaudevillian and a chorus girl, who also happen to be murderers.

Rock to play Duke Nukem?

April 4, 2001

Source: Coming Attractions

Coming Attractions reported a rumor a few days ago that WWF wrestler, The Rock (aka Dwayne Johnson), was being considered for the title role in the upcoming DUKE NUKEM movie.  They received conformation on Tuesday that not only was the rumor true, but that Rock was offered the part and he was currently mulling over the deal. I can't imagine he'd pass this role up, unless schedules conflict with his first starring role in the MUMMY prequel, THE SCORPION KING.

ET re-release

April 4, 2001

Source: Movie Headlines

Steven Spielberg spoke with Fox News about the re-release of his classic film, ET: THE EXTRA TERRESTRIAL, and said that the film would be seen in theaters once again on the twentieth anniversary of its release, in April, 2002.  Plans for the film include a restored print and previously deleted scenes.  And don't worry about the re-release not coming to a theater near you.  Spielberg insists that it will be as wide a release as a brand new movie would get.

Jay and Silent Bob wraps

April 4, 2001

Source: News Askew

A whole bunch of folks turned out in Leonardo, New Jersey, early Tuesday morning to watch the last scene of JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK being filmed at the Quick Stop. Fans turned out in droves to watch the cameras roll for the very last time on Dante, Randal, Jay and Silent Bob, since Kevin Smith is retiring the so-called "Askewniverse" he created.  There are numerous on-set reports (although curiously enough, not one from Joey Baloney, despite the fact I live about a half an hour away from Leonardo, sniff, sniff...) and pictures from the scene on the internet, most notably at News Askew and AICN.

Ritchie to direct Madonna..

April 3, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney

Our scooper 'Big Daddy Don Bodine' who sent along a batch of pictures from the short film series THE HIRE (with directors like Ang Lee and John Frankenheimer and produced by David Fincher), is back with more pics and an interesting news tidbit.  Here is a list of the four films in the series and their directors:

Film 1: AMBUSH by John Frankenheimer
Film 2: CHOSEN by Ang Lee
Film 3: THE FOLLOW by Wong Kar-Wai
Film 4: STAR by Guy Ritchie

STAR is the big news out of that bunch as the last I heard, there were only three films in the series. Our scooper says Guy Ritchie has just been signed to direct the final film and it will star none other than.....you guessed it.   Madonna.  The films will premiere later this month on the website www.bmwfilms.com.  Check out pics from the set of THE FOLLOW below:

Ocean's 11 set report

April 3, 2001

Source: Dark Horizons

A report from the set of OCEAN'S ELEVEN turned up on Dark Horizons on Monday giving readers a more detailed look at the production and overall feel of the movie. The scooper says the film has a MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and CHARLIE'S ANGELS feel to it with "lots of very high tech toys."  Check out this scene description and prepare to get excited about this film: "Matt Damon who is the pick pocket, has to steal the code key from the one guy who has it, and get into the vault before an hour because the codes change every hour, then pass a retina scan when only a real eye will do, then get in a vault that is filled with moving laser beams, that will trip an alarm. Guards everywhere, and video monitors as well. And seizmic monitors that pick up a car going over a speed bump 100 feet up."  Sweeeeet.

"Daredevil" and "Iron Man" reviewed...

April 3, 2001

Source: Ain't It Cool News

Harry has gotten his nubby fingers on three hot scripts based on Marvel comics; DAREDEVIL, IRON MAN and THE INCREDIBLE HULK.  Mr. Knowles reviewed two of the scripts, DAREDEVIL and IRON MAN, and posted them here and here, respectively.  Also interesting to note is that Harry says his scooper is deep within the offices of Marvel and could get their hands on any Marvel script in production.  Looking forward to what X-MEN 2 has to offer....

Ashley Judd is "Catwoman"!!

April 2, 2001

Source: Variety

Yes, that's right boyz & girls, the puuurfect woman to slip into the CATWOMAN outfit, according to Warner Bros, is none other than the sexy lady better known as Ms. Ashley Judd. I'm sure many of you remember how delectable Michelle Pfeiffer looked in that black, leather outfit back when the BATMAN movies were good (BATMAN RETURNS), and now here comes news from Variety that the WB is hoping for more franchise power, as Ashley Judd has officially signed on to star in the "rapidly developing" CATWOMAN movie. No word on who the director will be, her co-stars or any starting date.

"Matrix 2" pics and set report

April 2, 2001

Source: Ain't It Cool News

Harry has scored a pretty neat and awfully detailed scoop from the set of the MATRIX sequels. Forget those last pics you saw that showed a phone booth and a license plate. This group has shots of cars cut plain in half, new silver, dreadlocked villains (described as manifestations of computer viruses) and stunt doubles for Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence Fishburne. In addition to all that there is a set report that details all the stuff the scooper couldn't get pictures of. It makes for a pretty interesting read, even from a guy who isn't in love with all things MATRIX.

Rodriguez discusses "Spy Kids 2"

April 2, 2001

Source: Coming Soon

You might not know it, but even before its grand weekend box-office opening of $27 million, the sequel to SPY KIDS had already been greenlit by the Weinstein brothers of Miramax. Writer/director Robert Rodriguez said of the film:

"I wrote the sequel by accident," says Rodriguez. "The truth is I wrote a real long first movie where the kids had a robot dog. It was even more about the kids becoming spies. I had to take half the ideas out for this first movie, so I was left with the sequel. It has been green lit, and I want to go before the strike. I just promise you one thing. It won't be 'Spy Kids Go to Vegas.' It's got imagination. It will be a hybrid world. Sort of like James Bond meets Willy Wonka."

He also mentions how he wanted to direct ZORRO, but things just didn't gel, and that he actually turned down directing SUPERMAN LIVES, X-MEN and PLANET OF THE APES (although he admits that he would have taken SPIDER-MAN, had he been offered).

Dre back in films

April 2, 2001

Source: Variety

Rapper Dr. Dre is heading back into film with a role in TRAINING DAY, opposite Denzel Washington and Ethan Hawke. Dre will play a cop working under a veteran detective, Washington, in DAY, which will be directed by Antoine Fuqua (THE REPLACEMENT KILLERS). The film will also have cameos by Dre’s pal Snoop Dogg and Macy Gray. At one point, Eminem was considered for a role in this film, but eventually passed on the part.

Spidey updates

April 2, 2001

Source: Spider-Man Hype

Spider-Man Hype scored several scoops over the weekend, some of which are pretty neat and some of which are questionable. On the cool side, they have a clear, close picture of the back of Spider-Man's costume and Willem Dafoe in his Green Goblin costume with the mask off. On the questionable side, is a purported teaser poster for SPIDER-MAN that has been in theaters. Now I was in the theaters this weekend (saw BLOW by the way and it was about a 7 out of 10) and I certainly didn't see it. What also raises my suspicions is that it looks like the same image released by Sony of Tobey Maguire in costume at the top of the building. You may want to check it out and make up your own mind.

See Willem Dafoe in Green Goblin costume here

Hudson/Sonnenfeld for Last Call

April 2, 2001

Source: Variety

Almost Academy Award winning actress Kate Hudson and director Barry Sonnenfeld will team up for the romantic comedy, LAST CALL. The film was pitched by BOSTON PUBLIC writers Daniel Cohn, Jeremy Miller and Alicia Martin and follows the tale of two angels sent to pick up a shock jock whose time has come. The two accidentally save the man’s life and now must concoct a way to kill him. The angels (on a 70s actress, the other a 40s con man) begin to fall in love and instead of killing the man, wind up changing his life for the better. Talk about a complicated story, sheesh!
