A Weekend at the Fangoria Con with JoBlo and Arrow

This past weekend JoBlo, Arrow and I converged on New York City and the New Yorker Hotel for the Fangoria Weekend of Horrors. It was a weekend of horrors alright but probably not in the way Fangoria had intended. Where shall I begin…

Getting up at the ass-crack of dawn is never easy. It’s even harder on a Saturday after a loooong week at work. Saturdays are traditionally the days where I can kick back and relax but not this Saturday, because I’m headed out to meet the guys in New York City. If you’ve never tried getting into New York City from New Jersey, good for you. Avoid this trip at all costs. My last column addressed this issue in depth so I won’t go into much detail here. Let’s just say, that I learned my lesson trying to drive into the city, so this time I took the train. Don’t you just love the train? Personally I’d rather hammer nails into my head than sit on the train, but it beats driving. After a long train ride, which was packed with hyperactive kids on their way to the circus, I actually felt refreshed to be in New York City (warning sign #1). I used to work in Manhattan, so it was a bit of a coming home. This must be thrilling for all of you reading this, so I’ll skip to the good stuff (I’m using the term good here lightly).

I woke up JoBlo and Arrow, who from the looks of things had an interesting Friday night without me. I paid the transsexual midget and helped the guys clean up after the donkey. The boys needed some nourishment so after a quick trip to McDonald’s we got in line for entrance into the convention. We were screwed out of press passes for the event (warning sign #2) by a woman named Marlene or Theresa or Betty but luckily we didn’t have to wait in the really really long line outside, just the really long line inside. I remember Arrow asking me if I saw any nice looking ladies on my way into the hotel. I won’t repeat what I told him, but if I dug up Eleanor Roosevelt’s corpse and propped her up against the wall, she would’ve looked pretty hot in this crowd. (NOTE TO ANGRY READERS: I am no prize myself, and if you took offense to that you’re probably not one either). We met some cool people on line and I tried to get a feel what everyone was looking forward to (not being a huge horror fan myself, I was curious to see what die hard fans were into). The response was almost always Bruce Campbell.

Once we were stamped and stickered accordingly, we three kings made our way into the convention. The first thing I noticed was not the booths of vendors, the horror memorabilia, or Gunnar Hansen (aka Leatherface) signing autographs, it was the awful stink that pervaded this room. I couldn’t help but think certainly no one in this room was Zest-fully clean. I walked around the vendor floor and soon saw something that piqued my interest.  The way out.

I made my way over to the large auditorium/conference room as the presentations were about to begin. First up was the guy behind the guy from Fangoria magazine (who reminds me a lot of the Byers from The Lone Gunman) who introduced some reels from different studios. Some of the things screened included stuff I’ve seen before (SOUL SURVIVORS, TOMB RAIDER, THE MUMMY RETURNS) and some cool behind the scenes footage of films like PLANET OF THE APES, KISS OF THE DRAGON (starring Jet Li) and FROM HELL. A lot of the APES footage seemed familiar because of the wealth of pictures all over the net. There was a cool sequence that featured Michael Clarke Duncan being fitted for his prosthetics as Attar and then having the prosthetics applied. The DRAGON footage was too short but it was still great to see Jet Li back in action and kicking some major ass. The crowd let out a collective "OOOF" when Li punched some guy with a hot iron. The FROM HELL footage was pretty kick ass and since I’ve seen relatively little from this project, it was good to see a nice behind-the-scenes piece about the film. I originally doubted the Hughes Brothers skill but after taking a look at what they’ve done, I’ve come around. I’m now officially looking forward to FROM HELL if for no other reason than to stare at Heather Graham’s heaving bosom.

Next up was a look at HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES, Rob Zombie’s directorial debut. Showing footage to this crowd was a great piece of marketing (by whoever is marketing this film now that Universal has dropped it) as the audience giggled in anticipation at every turn. This looks like a return to real horror filmmaking after the SCREAM-era of horror. Should be cool should it ever hit the big screen…

I knew the GHOSTS OF MARS trailer had been online for about a week or so before this weekend but I never got around to checking it out. Once I saw it, I wish I never had. It looked completely ridiculous and just waaay cheesy. Then again this is John Carpenter we’re talking about here so maybe cheesy is what they were aiming for. Oh well, I guess I was just expecting more from this one and I was just let down.

There were also trailers for the Australian film CUT (featuring Molly Ringwald), the LeeLee Sobieski comedy/thriller JOY RIDE (formerly SQUELCH) and some independent films most annoyingly the fourth installment in the TOXIC AVENGER series (to its credit it does feature a cameo from Howard Stern regular Hank the Angry Drunken Dwarf, which is something you don’t see too often).

The first speaker of the day was a girl whose name you probably wouldn’t recognize but whose face you definitely would. It wasn’t until saw her up close did I start to realize who Danielle Harris was, and by the time we were naked in bed together I was 100% sure she was the girl from HALLOWEEN 4 and 5 and Bruce Willis’ daughter from THE LAST BOY SCOUT (apologies to the sweet Ms. Harris who in no way shared a bed with me that evening…not in real life anyway…). I felt awfully bad for her cause the goons backstage literally just threw her up there with a microphone and expected this 23-year old to entertain a room full of movie geeks (me included). At first, there were a lot of awkward silences as she asked if anyone had questions; anyone?, anyone?….Bueller??, but the crowd eventually warmed up to her and things went a little bit better from there.

Next up was the cast of the upcoming vampire flick (what a novel concept), THE FORSAKEN. There were some people like Kerr Smith and Brandon Fehr that some people in the crowd seemed to recognize, but I wouldn’t know them if my life depended on it. Watching them mumble answers to the wicked retarded questions posed by the Fangoria guy was insanely boring and made me want to run up on stage and slap some life into these people. Finally a guy sitting about two rows up from us stood up and asked the most notoriously wanna-be James Dean of the bunch, Brandon Fehr, "Why do you think you’re so special?" It was pretty damn funny and I was so embarrassed for this punk that I couldn’t even look up.

Towards the end of that panel, I was wondering why there were so many people jammed into the auditorium. Then I checked the schedule and saw who was coming up next: Bruce Campbell. They showed a brief retrospective of his career before he came up on stage, which highlighted some of his best lines. He came out to uproarious applause and a standing ovation. He went on to make everyone there raise their right hand and swear to buy his new book, If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B-Movie Actor. He was a really personable and charismatic guy and you could tell by the way he handled the crowd that he’d definitely done this before. He mentioned some of his new movie roles (THE MAJESTIC, SERVICING SARA and BUBBA HO-TEP) and even treated the crowd to his line from the upcoming SPIDER-MAN, "Ladies and gentlemen, the Amaaaaaaazinggg Spider-Man!!!!" It was a pretty cool moment.

After Mr. Campbell was done speaking, I made my way backstage to interview the star about his illustrious career. Oh wait, no I didn’t. I sat in my seat like every other dude in the crowd and waited for the screenwriter of PSYCHO, Joseph Stefano, to come up on stage. Now here was a guy who wrote one of the most memorable horror films of all time and worked with the always enigmatic Alfred Hitchcock. Surely this is a man who’s got some really interesting stories! Unfortunately, he did not tell any of these stories.

I woke up just in time for Kane Hodder, the man behind the mask of Jason Voorhees, who was there to screen the never-before-seen trailer for the upcoming JASON X. Finally some decent scoopage! Hodder went on to mention that he didn’t bring the JASON X trailer with him and that just about did it for me. I wanted to be mad at Fangoria or Creation Entertainment who put together this cluster-fuck but in their defense, they did advertise it as a "Weekend of Horrors" and this certainly was a horrific experience.

Thankfully, our night was spared by the cast of SLEEPAWAY CAMP and the awful nice Felissa Rose (who played Angela) who hung with us at the bar, and the continual night of drinking thereafter. So all in all, maybe not all that bad... :)

BTW, if you want more DETAILED information about every single panel and pictures of me, JoBlo, the Arrow and pretty much everyone who went up on stage at the event, follow the link below:

Steve Buscemi stabbed in bar brawl...

April 13, 2001

Source: E! Online

Known primarily for his infectious characterizations in indie films, actor Steve Buscemi was stabbed Thursday morning, after he and fellow actor Vince Vaughn, were involved in a Wilmington, North Carolina bar brawl. Buscemi, Vaughn and screenwriter Scott Rosenberg were hanging out in a local bar called the Firebelly Lounge, during their off-time filming DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE, a movie starring John Travolta, when they got involved in this melee. Both Vaughn and Rosenberg were arrested and thankfully Buscemi's injuries were only minor and he's expected back on the set Monday. Wilmington resident Timothy Fogerty, 21, was arrested and charged Thursday with assault with a deadly weapon after he allegedly stabbed Buscemi several times in the head, throat and arm. Witnesses say that Buscemi, Vaughn and Rosenberg were leaving the spot when the fight broke out. Vaughn and Rosenberg were arrested and held on $600 bail.

BMW Films goes live!

April 13, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney

Our BMW Films scooper 'Big Daddy Don Bodine' (who has been kind enough to provide some sweet pics in the past) has alerted us that the official site for BMW Films has gone live. If you're a bit sketchy on the details, this is the site that will feature a short film series entitled THE HIRE, that will be produced by David Fincher and featuring the following directors:

  • AMBUSH by John Frankenheimer (RONIN, THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE)
  • CHOSEN by Ang Lee (CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON)
  • THE FOLLOW by Wong Kar-Wai
  • STAR by Guy Ritchie (SNATCH) and starring Madonna
  • POWDER KEG by Alejandro González Iñárritu (AMORES PERROS)
  • UNTITLED by Ben Younger (BOILER ROOM)

The site features all kinds of cool information on the films, their directors and duh, the cars.  You can also download the trailer for AMBUSH, which will premiere on April 26th.  If you're curious what these films will be about, here's the official synopsis for AMBUSH:

"On a dark freeway, a van swerves close and the door slides open. From inside, masked gunmen threaten to fire unless The Driver stops and surrenders his passenger, a seemingly harmless man they accuse of smuggling diamonds. It’s a simple choice: do or die. Legendary director John Frankenheimer and star Clive Owen combine talents to create a dramatic chase with some unexpected twists."

American Psycho 2

April 13, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Lions Gate has given the go-ahead to AMERICAN PSYCHO 2 despite the fact that they will tarnish the good AMERICAN PSYCHO name. The film will star Mila Kunis (THAT 70s SHOW, GET OVER IT) as a survivor of a Pat Bateman attack (I thought it was all just a delusional fantasy?) who goes a little wacky herself.  The college co-ed has an obsession in becoming a certain teacher's assistant and is willing and able to kill anyone who gets in her way.  The film will be directed by Morgan J. Freeman (not THE Morgan Freeman) who seems to have no problem directing this shite.  At the very least, I can take solace in the fact that this film is most likely going to be direct-to-video.

Willis to star in Cross Check

April 13, 2001

Source: Variety

Warner Bros. will pay screenwriter Gary Scott Thompson (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS) a high six figure salary to pen the script CROSS CHECK, based on his own pitch to studio heads.  The studio will develop the film as a vehicle for Bruce Willis to star in and produce. So far the only details on the plot come in this vague sentence from Variety:  "Willis will play a sleuth who gets in way over his head in Canada."  Maybe Willis is a detective who goes undercover as a hockey player?  Maybe not....

Weird "A.I." internet marketing

April 12, 2001

Source: Ain't It Cool News

Harry and Moriarty at AICN reported on an interesting development in the marketing of Spielberg's latest, AI.  The newest AI trailer, released Monday, featured a mysterious credit to "Sentient Machine Therapist - Jeanine Salla."  More than a few people decided to type this name into search engines and they came up with a whole slew of sites related to AI.  The web (no pun intended) of sites and information is waaaay too lengthy and complicated to get into here, but try it for yourself.  Type the woman's name into a search engine and follow the links that come up.  If you're even more curious, check and see who registered some of these sites. If you're still curious, call some of the phone numbers on these sites......

Palahniuk movie news

April 12, 2001

Source: Variety

Author Chuck Palahniuk (FIGHT CLUB) has sold his latest novel, CHOKE (which hasn't even been released yet), to Bandeira Entertainment (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM) in a six-figure deal.  CHOKE will be published this spring and "is a story of sexual compulsion and Alzheimer's disease that turns on a med school dropout's get-rich-quick scheme, in which he pretends to be choking in restaurants." Fox 2000 is still developing Pahalniuk's SURVIVOR with Jake Paltrow, who wrote the script, but it still remains in development hell.  Get Ed Norton and Kate Hudson in SURVIVOR and I will cream my jeans. Until then, I'll wait for CHOKE which sounds just as delightfully bizarre.

Lions Gate acquires "O"

April 12, 2001

Source: Variety

Variety reports that Lions Gate Entertainment has picked up the long-troubled remake of Othello, O, from turnaround at Dimension/Miramax Films. Because of scenes that include four gruesome high school murders, Miramax was reluctant to release the film in the wake of real life school shootings. Lions Gate stepped in and saved the film from a straight-to-video release and plans to distribute the film, which stars Josh Hartnett, Julia Stiles and Mekhi Phifer in August.

April 12, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Susan Sarandon is in talks to star in an upcoming Disney live-action/animated film entitled ENCHANTED.  Actor David Hyde Pierce (FRASIER) has also been approached to join the production.  The film is a fairy tale romance that revolves around a girl who is banished from the animated world to the real world (i.e. New York City) by your typical Disney evil queen (Sarandon).  Barry Sonnenfeld (MEN IN BLACK) will produce the film and Disney veteran and Academy Award winner Alan Menken (BEAUTY AND THE BEAST) will compose the score.

Marlon Brando in "Scary Movie 2"?

April 11, 2001

Source: Variety

Variety is reporting that Marlon Brando has been offered a plum $1 million big ones for a cameo appearance in the upcoming Wayans' brothers sequel, SCARY MOVIE 2. The trade reports that Brando is looking to broaden his acting chops and as such is keen on jumping aboard a high profile comedy.  This wouldn't be the first time Brando was offered big bucks for a small role.  The burly star received a whopping $4 million for just ten minutes of screentime in 1978's SUPERMAN.

Has Chow Yun-Fat lost his mind?!

April 11, 2001

Source: Variety

Chow Yun-Fat, star of CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON and the John Woo classic, HARD BOILED, has chosen his next role.  The voice of Terl the Psychlo in the BATTLEFIELD EARTH animated series. I don't know what's worse, that someone decided to make a cartoon out of this crapfest or that an actor such as Chow Yun-Fat would reduce himself to providing voice-over work for it. Twenty half-hour episodes are in production of the series. In a related story, an unnamed JoBlo staffer is looking for a rafter to hang himself from.

Red Dragon update

April 11, 2001

Source: Dark Horizons

Ted Tally, writer of SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, spoke with Cinescape magazine and cleared the air regarding the HANNIBAL prequel and sequel talk that's been floating about.  He says it will be both a prequel and a sequel, with the film taking place after the events in HANNIBAL with a heavily reliance on flashbacks to the events that took place in the RED DRAGON book by Thomas Harris.  I really wish they would let this one go, but I guess when a movie makes as much money as HANNIBAL, you're going to get a sequel, like it or not.

Cook goes Invisible

April 11, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Rachael Leigh Cook, soon to be seen on the big screen screwing up JOSIE AND THE PUSSYCATS (in her defense, it's not really her fault), will produce and star in the upcoming film INVISIBLE GIRL. GIRL, a low-budget comedy, revolves around a girl seemingly invisible (hence, the title) to the rest of society, until she decides to use herself as bait to catch a notorious serial killer.  The film, which begins shooting in early May, will be directed by first timer Max Hoffman.

Petersen, Zaillian join Endurance

April 11, 2001

Source: Variety

Director Wolfgang Peterson (THE PERFECT STORM) and screenwriter Steve Zaillian (SCHINDLER'S LIST) are set to take over the troubled production of ENDURANCE, a film based on Ernest Shackelton's tragic South Pole mission, which left most of the crew dead. The project has been with Columbia for sometime but the studio has never been 100% happy with the script, which has seen at least five different writers. Zaillian will pen the final rewrite and Peterson will produce and direct the project which sounds awfully familiar to that other based-on-a-true-story, man vs. nature film directed by Wolfgang Peterson.

De Niro and Lopez to team

April 10, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Robert De Niro and Jennifer Lopez are set to team up to remake the 1955 film LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME. The new film, which will be scripted by Howard Gould, will only be loosely based on the original film and will follow a love triangle set in the music industry (please, please, please spare me of any Jennifer Lopez related musical numbers…). The original film starred Doris Day and James Cagney and was a full-fledged musical, while this version will not be. Both stars have projects lined up before this one, so don’t expect to see this until 2002 (maybe even early 2003) sometime.

Teenage Fatal Attraction

April 10, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Erika Christensen (TRAFFIC) has signed to star in a "’Fatal Attraction’ but set in high school" film entitled SWIMFAN85. The film, which will also star teen up-and-comers (I think "Teen Up-and-Cummers" was the name of a porno I once rented….) Jesse Bradford and Shiri Appleby, revolves around a girl (Christensen) who falls for the star swimmer in high school (Bradford) and begins to obsess about him. The title, I assume, refers to a screen name the young girl uses to harass the swimmer.

This will be Fugit’s first role since starring in FAMOUS and Lohman’s second after playing a part in DRAGONFLY, opposite Kevin Costner. The movie, based on the book by Janet Fitch, revolves around a young girl (Lohman) who travels from one foster home to another after being abandoned by her imprisoned mother. Fugit plays a fellow foster child. The film will begin filming later this month.
