Double Down
Directed by: Neil Jordan
Starring: Nick Nolte, Tcheky Karyo, Ralph Fiennes
Plot: A payoff of 800
million francs and 24 priceless paintings are more than enough to lure
down-on-his-luck Bob Montana to clean up his heroin habit and take the
gamble of a lifetime. Masterminding two audacious robberies, one real, one
fake, Bob enlists a team of ex-cons to knock over the Casino Riviera in
Monte Carlo. Ironically, the gambler turned criminal finds a lucky streak in
the most extraordinary manner.

The 51st State
Directed by: Ronny Yu
Starring: Samuel L. Jackson, Robert Carlyle, Rhys Ifans
Plot: Master chemist
Elmoy McElroy just blew up the world's top five drug dealers leaving him to
profit from his latest creation- the ultimate party drug POS-51. Unaware
that the boss he double-crossed is alive and hot on his trail, the savvy
McElroy heads to England to close a $20-million deal with Liverpool's
biggest drug baron. Forming an unlikely partnership with the local hood sent
to collect him from the airport, the two get caught up in a web of double
dealing and must out-con the con men just to stay alive.

29 Palms
Directed by: Leonardo Ricagni
Starring: Rachael Leigh Cook, Chris O'Donnell, Bill Pullman, Jeremy
Davies, Michael Rapaport
Plot: A frantic chase for
a bag of stolen money brings out the viciousness of a desperate group of
characters so ruthless and greedy, that they become comical. A drifter's
seemingly simple act of stealing a bag of cash thrown him in the path of a
violent cop, a casino security guard, a hit man and a double-dealing judge
all with their own reasons for wanting the bag for themselves. Forming an
uneasy alliance with a waitress, the drifter tries to outsmart his pursuers
and find out why the godfather-like owner of a reservation casino wants him
dead.

Slackers
Directed by: Dewey Nicks
Starring: Dewon Sava, Jason Schwartzman
Plot: Dave, Sam and Jeff
are a winning trio - through a combination of arrogance, wit and sheer
audacity, they successfully con their way through college without even
studying. Even with finals looking, they couldn't be more relaxed and
confident. Then, super-nerd Ethan, catches Dave in an exam scam and
threatens to expose the slackers unless they help him score with Angela, the
college beauty. Dave views this as an easy scam until he falls for Angela
exposing himself and his buddies to Ethan. Now the friends must our-maneuver
the scheming Ethan if Dave is to get the girl and the three are to graduate
as planned.

Owning Mahowny
Directed by: Richard Kwietniowski
Starring: Philip Seymour Hoffman, Minnie Driver, John Hurt
Plot: Polite,
mild-mannered Dan Mahowny is an assistant bank manager with a head for
numbers, a knack for making decisions, and a devastating appetite for
gambling. He doesn't gamble for material wealth. He isn't interested in the
glamorous perks casinos offer big spenders. It never occurs to him to save
any of his winnings. He lives for the thrill of the bet. And that thrill
drives him to incredible lengths of ingenuity and stamina. Dan Mahowny is
the unlikely hero who takes on two of the financial institutions everyone
loves to hate- the bank and the casino. And for a brief while, he winds.
Based on Gary Ross' best-selling true account, STUNG.

World Traveler
Directed by: Bart Freundlich

spiritual and emotional breakdown, Cal disappears from his home, leaving his
wife, his three-year old son and a seemingly comfortable New York City life.

adventure of self-discovery forcing him to reconcile the past and embrace
the certainties of his future.

French-Canadian woman is thrown into an extraordinary set of circumstances

| Eminem: the movie... |
June 1, 2001 |
| Source: Variety Curtis Hanson
has taken a huge step backwards from critical faves like WONDER BOYS and LA CONFIDENTIAL to direct
FIGHT SONG, a movie starring Eminem and loosely based on the rapper's life. One has
got to wonder why a director of Hanson's caliber would take this project (which reminds me
of Vanilla Ice's feature
film debut COOL AS ICE) and he defends his choice by saying, "I
saw here an opportunity to make a serious movie about the emotional struggles of
contemporary adolescents in this country." Oooooookay...whatever you say
buddy. To make things worse, the script was written by Scott Silver who previously
wrote the unwatchable MOD SQUAD movie.
I had heard a rumor that this was all going to happen and I came damn close to
reporting it about two weeks ago. But I thought there's no way it could be true....

| "Boat Trip" script review |
June 1, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney 'Honest
Abe' checked back in today, this time with his review of the BOAT TRIP script.
TRIP co-stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Horatio Sanz (TOMCATS) as two eligible bachelors
accidentally booked on a gay cruise ship. Let's take a look and see what Abe has to
say:
Cuba Gooding Jr. and Horatio Sanz team up for a
comedy about two single guys who sign up for one of those singles weekend cruises to meet
some lovely ladies....until a mix up occurs and they wind up on a boat for men seeking
men. Now, I admit that I was hesitant just because it sound so basic. I mean,
you know at least one of them will find love. But I like Cuba and when I found out
that Roger Moore was involved as well, I dived in. As I suspected, it is quite basic
but it's not flat out stupid. It was funny to read and Moore does quite well as an
older gay male dispensing advice. The two leads basically walk in unaware of their
situation and once they realize it, after a few attempts to leave the vessel, decide there
ain't much choice but to at least enjoy the cruise. Then a female steward enters the
picture. Then the Swedish Bikini Team's helicopter goes down and the ladies seek
refuge on boat. Then Cuba's ex comes back into the picture. If memory serves,
this film is not slated to be released until later next year.
My final word? Well, I probably won't shell
out 8 bucks but I'd definitely go see a matinee (5 bucks) unless the trailer totally sucks
assimus maximus.

| "Shanghai Knights" a go |
June 1, 2001 |
| Source: Variety The long
rumored sequel to SHANGHAI NOON was
made official yesterday as Disney announced they reached deals with Jackie Chan (does this
guy ever take a break?!) and Owen Wilson to re-team for SHANGHAI KNIGHTS. In this
installment, Chan and Wilson travel to London in an attempt to foil a plot to overthrow
the Chinese and British government. NOON director Tom Dye (who's directing the
upcoming Martin Lawrence comedy BLACK KNIGHT) is expected to return although that deal is
not official.

| Travolta back for "Be Cool" after all? |
June 1, 2001 |
| Source: Variety USA Today
reported a week or so ago that John Travolta wanted no part of the upcoming sequel to GET
SHORTY, entitled BE COOL. MGM, who just picked up the rights to the Elmore Leonard
book, is quick to point out that Travolta is indeed interested in reprising his role as
Chili Palmer and they are currently negotiating with the star to return. Director
Barry Sonnenfeld is not expected to return as he will be tied up with his duties on MEN IN
BLACK 2, which begins filming this month in New York City. John Travolta stars next
in SWORDFISH alongside Halle Barry's breasts (which are getting great reviews).

| "A Beautiful Mind" set report |
May 31, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney A few
weeks ago, your very own Joey Baloney was lucky enough to visit the set of the Russell
Crowe/Ron Howard flick A BEAUTIFUL MIND which happened to be filming in nearby Madison,
New Jersey. The film is about John Nash
(Crowe), who is diagnosed as paranoid-schizophrenic but goes on to win a
Nobel Prize for work on game theory. The majority of filming took place at Princeton University, but for a
few days the production took over the Vanderbilt Mansion on the campus of Fairleigh
Dickinson University and turned it into the Massachusetts Governor's Ball.
I grabbed my camera, pad and paper and fedora with the little
piece of paper that says "press" sticking out of it and headed over to check
things out. I had some difficulty finding parking so after a long, hot, sweaty walk
through the scenic campus, I finally wound up where I wanted to be. I took a tour of
the mansion and the grounds, taking pictures of the beautiful scenery. I was warned
not to take pictures of the talent and to stick to strictly location shots. Guess
they don't want Russell Crowe getting caught on camera flipping the bird again.
Being the law abiding citizen that I am, I didn't break the rules and simply observed the
action. There were lots of extras walking with the women dressed in enormous ball
gowns carrying parasols and the men in top hats and tuxedos. I didn't see Russell
Crowe or Ron Howard or Ed Harris, but I was lucky enough to bump into Jennifer Connelly
who was kind enough to drag me into an empty room and let me feel her up. Her boobs
are even better in person!! [Note to lawyers and stupid people: this did not
actually happen. The only place I feel Jennifer Connelly's boobs is in my dreams.]
After that quick make-out session, I said goodbye to FDU and
the set of A BEAUTIFUL MIND. All in all, there really wasn't too much to report, but
hey, it's a slow news day. The film is tentatively scheduled to be
released on December 25, 2001. Check out some pictures below of my visit to the
set:

| "Confessions of a Dangerous.." script review |
May 31, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney 'Honest
Abe' was kind enough to send over his review of the as-yet unproduced script CONFESSIONS
OF A DANGEROUS MIND. This script, written by Charlie Kaufman (BEING JOHN
MALKOVICH)
was originally to be filmed by Bryan Singer (X-MEN) and starring Johnny Depp and George
Clooney but funding fell apart and all talent seems to have left the project. Let's
take a look and see what Abe says:
"Got a chance to read the long in development
semi-autobiographical story of Chuck Barris' life in the CIA (if you believe
him). Well, it's not a bad read but I did find parts of it to be dragging. There is not a
lot of action but simply Barris either acting out as he's narrating to an unseen
interviewer the events of his younger life that unknowingly led him to be a CIA hitman. I
guess the problem is that having grown up watching him on TV, it's just tough to swallow
that this man has the skills to kill on command. Like I said, it's not bad but about
halfway through the script, I started wondering how it was gonna end. Sometimes that's a
good thing because it means i'm hooked and can't wait to read how it's gonna be played out
but in this case, I was leery because I didn't see the story advancing at a decent pace.
Well, turns out I was right cause the story just pretty much abruptly ends. Thank you for
watching. Ugh. I mean, there is a climax between Barris and someone who's out to get him.
I won't say who but it is quite predictable. Would I rush out to see this? Probably not
unless it happened to be a favorite actor of mine in the lead role."

| "Matrix" teaser description |
May 31, 2001 |
| Source: Film Force THE
MATRIX RELOADED isn't set for release until Christmas 2002, but why not get an early start
on buzz? Apparently, Warners has cut a teaser for the film that they plan to run
during this summer's holiday run (possibly during AI??...). A scooper caught a
glimpse and this is some of what he saw:
"The screen is black, when we start to hear
the sound of the binary code, like in the original. Just one green letter of the Matrix
falls down the screen, followed by another, and then another. Suddenly, they multiply and
the entire screen is covering in green letters flowing down it. The letters continue
falling vertically downward, faster. The sound stops and the code keeps moving faster
until it blurs into a series of images: Trinity, Neo, and Morpheus.
The sound of an explosion is heard as the screen flashes white,
and then back to pitch black."

| "Cloak and Dagger" film |
May 31, 2001 |
| Source: Variety The Marvel
comic book CLOAK AND DAGGER is set to get the big-screen treatment from the fine folks at
Dimension Films (SPY KIDS). CLOAK isn't the most well-known of the Marvel comic
properties (either was BLADE...) but producers hope it will transcend the comic and make a
great, exciting film. The film will center around Tyrone Johnson (aka Cloak), a
streetwise black man, who teams up with fellow runaway Tandy Bowen (aka Dagger), a way hot
young rich girl, to protect the kids from the evils of the streets with the powers they
hold over light and darkness. The actual Marvel comic book has been out of print but
expect the title to see a resurgence if the film takes off.

| "The
Lord of the Rings"...action figures!! |
May 30, 2001 |
| Source:
New Line Cinema Toy
Biz, a division of Marvel Enterprises, is introducing an action-packed
line-up of products inspired by THE LORD OF THE RINGS feature film, to be
released on December 19, 2001. The items themselves, which will start with
an initial wave of action figures and accessories, role-play items, LCD
watches and collectible marbles will be in stores this coming summer.
According to the Toy Biz press release: "Intricately
sculpted in the likenesses of the actors, each item employs a combination
of laser scanned resemblances and top talent sculptors, resulting in
incredibly detailed figures that flawlessly captures the authenticity of
the characters and accessories from the live-action film.
Toy Biz will bring The Lord of the Rings line of action-packed toys to life by
combining a number of dynamic action features -- including sound,
movement, and light-up features -- allowing kids to re-enact the battles
between elves, dwarves and wizards and the forces of evil." The
action figures below should be retailing at around $7.99.

possibility of a sequel to the X-FILES
feature film. He said, "There are no plans as far as I know. I don't have a

be returning for a ninth season on the popular television show all but officially giving

| DeSanto out of "X-Men 2" |
May 30, 2001 |
| Source: Ain't It Cool News Tom DeSanto, the sole voice of fanboy reason on the set of X-MEN, may not participate in any sequels of the
film. A scooper sent a report in to AICN saying that a dispute over credit on the
first film and subsequent films may keep DeSanto from working with Fox on this
franchise. DeSanto did a lot of work on X-MEN and was upset that he only received an
"executive producer" credit, while Lauren Shuler-Donner showed up once or twice
on set and was credited as a "producer." Now, DeSanto wants that all
important "producer" credit (and deservedly so) but has come to a stand-still in
negotiations with Fox and Shuler-Donner who want him to stay as an
"executive." So far, all I've heard in regards to X-MEN 2 is bad buzz.
Could this sequel wind up sucking ass?

| Jackie Chan workin' overtime |
May 30, 2001 |
| Source: Variety and Hollywood
Reporter Jackie Chan, second only to
Dr. Drew on the busiest motherf***ers list, has no less than three projects on his plate
along with his RUSH HOUR 2 and THE ACCIDENTAL SPY opening this summer and December
respectively. Chan is set to star in NOSEBLEED, an action film about a high-rise
window washer caught up in a terrorist's plan to blow up his building, which has just been
bought by MGM after the film was dropped by New Line Cinema. He will also be
starring in two Hong-Kong films, SUN TZU'S ART OF WAR (not to be confused with the Wesley
Snipes crap-fest ART OF WAR) and OPERATION
CONDOR 3. WAR is expected to be the most expensive Chinese film of all-time
estimated at around $75-$85 million US dollars.

| Dr. Drew's DVD Roundup |
May 30, 2001 |
| Source:
DVD Clinic After a
long bargaining session, we finally managed to spring ole Dr. Drew free of his captors.
In addition to this week's hunk of DVD news, Drew provides some insight into his
weeks of torture at the hands of ruthless Albaklanian terrorists. Here's D with the
details:
Where do I begin? As Joey mentioned last week, I had
the unfortunate displeasure of getting kidnapped by some very unhappy Albaklanian
terrorists
who after smuggling me to their hidden fortress and strapping me to a reclining La-Z Boy,
repeatedly asked me: "Who is Santa Claus and where are his nuclear missiles?!?"
For the next 3 weeks, I tried my best to explain the mythological history of the big guy
behind Christmas but they refused to listen to any of my explanations. Clinging to life, I
tried my best to survive on a steady diet of Full House, spideys and gelfite fish but I
quickly began losing my mind. Realizing that I needed to escape before all hope was lost,
I had come up with a devious plan. While reviewing TRAFFIC, I swiftly snatched the disc out
of the player and held it at a very precise angle which caused all the light in the room
to bounce off the DVD and into the eyes of my captors. With them momentarily blinded by
the flash, I hastily made my exit before I was subjected to any more Kimmy Gibbler cameos.
And so here I am today, lucky to be alive, with this weeks DVD News
(Thanks for
covering for me Joey, I owe ya one.)

the works, although he was not asked to write it, and he also mentioned
that he was asked by Joel Shumacher to write scripts for THE LOST BOYS 2
and FLATLINERS 2, which he obliged, and even mentioned the plot for the
LOST BOYS prequel as being: "Set
at the turn of the century in San Francisco about a vampire that comes
from middle Europe and meets the five kids who eventually become the
vampires in "The Lost Boys". It was about how they become
involved with this sort of Dracula, Vlad the Impaler character, and each
one by one become vampires. It was great fun, a real period spectacle and
it ended with the big earthquake.

had made his millennium and I think he meant it, because he was bathed in

Jackman said. "I did not hang out to purchase my groceries and I just

Coming Attractions The
modern day retelling of OTHELLO, directed by the dude that nobody
recognized in O BROTHER WHERE ART THOU (Tim
Blake Nelson), starring a bunch of youngens, including Mekhi Phifer, Josh
Hartnett, Julia Stiles and others, got its first screening last night, and
CA was one of the first sites to get a reading on the film. So what did
their scooper have to say about the movie? Well, he does say that it was
"awesome" in his first sentence alone, so I guess that he kinda
dug it. Read the entire review here.

| "Pearl
Harbor" misses records... |
May 28, 2001 |

Reuters Even
though most moviegoers sighted against the film critics, including our
very own JoBlo who was only half/half on the movie (review
here), PEARL HARBOR was not able to beat any box-office records over
its opening weekend, despite reportedly costing more than any other film
ever made. The studio claims that this was because of the film's 3-hour+
length, which didn't allow it to have as many screenings in one day.
Either way, it appears as though the "word of mouth" is pretty
good on the film (just see the schmoes' comments under JoBlo's review), so
I guess we'll have to wait and see on how this film does in the long run. The
movie is estimated to have grossed close to $60 Million from Friday until
Sunday, with SHREK actually finishing a not to
distant second, with $42.6 Million. Check out the entire TOP
10 here. Below are the previous record holders: TOP RECORD WEEKENDS (3-day
results Fri-Sun)
1. The Lost World, The - $72.1 Million (May-97) Went on

Hulk to star in the Hulk! |

Ferrigno, the man who everyone is forever going to remember as the
"Hulk" from the popular TV series starring Bill Bixby, has
apparently agreed to be a part of the upcoming Ang Lee movie version of
THE INCREDIBLE HULK. Ferrigno said, "I‘ll be involved in the movie,
but I can‘t talk about it yet. It‘ll be a surprise, it‘ll
be a big movie with a $100 million budget. They‘ll probably start
shooting in March." But don't expect him to be the "Hulk"
once again, because director Ang Lee has already gone on record to say
that the new version of the Hulk will almost certainly be a CGI creation.

| A
sequel to "Easy Rider"? |
May 28, 2001 |
| Source:
Jam! Movies Say
it ain't so! But it might just be, as the often rumored sequel to the
Dennis Hopper biker classic EASY RIDER, is apparently on the fast track
again. The sequel to be titled EASY RIDER A.D., will take place some 30
years after the original when Wyatt (played by Peter Fonda) is imprisoned
for the murder of lawyer George Hanson (played by Jack
Nicholson). The movie will follow Hanson's son, Geoff, as he sets out to
prove that Wyatt (who presumably survived his own attack and went to jail)
is innocent of his father's murder.

| John
Woo's "Windtalkers" reviewed... |
May 28, 2001 |
| Source: Ain't It Cool News There
is a VERY early test screening review for John Woo's WINDTALKERS WWII
movie up at Harry's pad. The film stars Nicolas Cage, Christian Slater,
Peter Stormare and Noah Emmerich, and is scheduled to be released in
November of 2001. The basic plot outline suggests that the
film is about "two U.S. Marines in WWII who are
assigned to protect Navajo Marines who know a secret radio code". You
can see the crappy Real-Video trailer of the film right here at JoBlo's
Movie Trailers. Now if you want to read the entire review of the very
"rough cut" of the film, which was clocked at 3 hours at this
point, I have to warn you that it does contain SPOILERS and that it
is a negative review, with the dude sticking the words
"derivative" and "boring" to describe his feelings
about the film. Read
