| "Basic
Instinct 2" dropped; Stone sues |
June 8, 2001 |
| Source: Variety I have to say I laughed out loud when I read about
this.MGM has announced that the planned sequel to BASIC INSTINCT has officially been dropped, and in retaliation "star" Sharon Stone has filed a lawsuit against producers claiming
that they reneged on their agreement to pay her $14 million to reprise her role as Catherine
Trumbell. Studio CEO Alex Yemenidjian declined to publicly comment on why the film was dropped but one can speculate a number of reasons, all coming back to the troublemaking Stone.
Original director Paul Verhoeven passed, saying he had no desire to work with Ms. Stone again and David Cronenberg (THE FLY) and John McTiernan (DIE HARD) were both attached but eventually dropped due to "creative differences." The search for a director was almost as difficult as the search for a suitable co-star. Kurt Russell and Bruce Greenwood (13 DAYS) both declined and Stone vetoed the studio's choice of Benjamin
Bratt. So you know what I say to Sharon Stone? Too fucking bad. You messed up your last chance at a "comeback"
but at least now you're free to spend the rest of your life like the deranged Norma Desmond. "I'm ready for my
closeup, Mr. DeMille..."

| Fincher's
"Panic Room" script review! |
June 8, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney 'Honest
Abe' has checked in with not one, but two reviews of hotly anticipated films. First a review of
Fincher's follow-up to FIGHT CLUB called THE PANIC ROOM and second, the action/suspense flick formerly titled THE CASTLE starring Robert Redford and James
Gandolfini. Take it away, Abe!
THE PANIC ROOM (negative, minor spoilers)
I was excited when this first found it's way to my doorstep. David Fincher just doesn't know how to disappoint me. Well, I still expect great things from him but he's really gonna have to wow me after reading the mess that is THE PANIC ROOM. 90 percent of the movie takes place in one harrowing evening for Meg and Sarah but there are a few minor holes that just
dont' quite jive and then the writer tries to explain it, only making it worse. (I'll spare his name). This is gonna need some tight editing and I already have a feeling it will include Fincher's awesome camera magic. The main problem is that you really don't care about a single character in this script. Not the two heroines, nor the three bad guys. And when one has a sudden urge to explain how he just seems to always be dealt a bad hand in life, I almost heard mock violins playing. Oh
Puhleeeze! The basic story is that the two women (mother and daughter) have just moved into a HUGE (and I mean White House huge) apartment that was formerly owned by a recently deceased tycoon. He was a bit eccentric and has a "panic room" in the apartment, a room where he can safely observe the rest of the dwelling via monitors. There is also rations and a seperate phone line in this solid steel room. There's also a safe in this room that is the target of the three thieves. A battle of wits ensues. There was the usual quarreling among the bad guys and I got really sick of one guy who we have no idea why he's there other than as muscle, continue to utter, "can't let them see my face". (He usually keeps it behind a ski mask but it's not like the women know him.....and if they do or if they should, it's never even explained how or why.) Bottom line: last I heard, this movie was to star either Sandra Bullock or Nicole Kidman. I might be tempted to sneak in and see it if Sandra is gonna tackle a somewhat dramatic role but if it's Nicole...I'll pass. Her idea of drama is the same in everything she's done. I'd rather see Martin Lawrence in drag and if you read my review of Black Knight, you know how I feel about Mr. Lawrence.
Editor's Note: PANIC ROOM will star Jodie Foster in the lead once occupied by Nicole Kidman, who dropped out due to an injury.
Untitled Prison Project (formerly "THE CASTLE")
(positive, minor spoilers)
This is a good tight military prison drama action thriller all around cool movie. The End. Starring Robert Redford and James
Gandolfini, this movie set within a military prison stars Redford as a disgraced yet highly decorated General who unwittingly at first takes it upon himself to revamp the prison where enlisted men go to do hard time. Gandolfini is the warden and he reminded me of a modern day version of the warden from THE SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION. He's a hard man who runs his empire with an iron fist. He knows about Redford and respects him at first but comes to resent how the other prisonsers are in awe of him more than they are in fear of the warden. I don't know when this is expected to be released but I do know that it was a very good read. Redford finally comes up with a plan to expose the warden for the corrupt hard ass he is and he and Gandolfini begin an elaborate game of chess by continually trying to anticipate each other's next moves. A minor surprise at the end definitely made my jaw drop slightly but I'll let you be as surprised as I was. Maybe you'll see it coming but I sure as hell didn't. Bottom line: I'm there if not opening weekend, then within a week of it's release. Not a date movie though. Lots of testosterone in this one boys.

Movie Forums. The UPCOMING MOVIE TALK forum had a post up from one of
our very own schmoes who was lucky enough to catch an early test screening
of John McTiernan's ROLLERBALL (due out later this summer). The dude
thought that the movie was "okay" and would probably rate it
with a 7/10 or something, but doesn't think that it will be a
"money-maker". Oh yeah, he also said that there's a whole lotta
violence in the movie (although this might be cut by the time the film is
finally released) and all KINDS OF NUDITY!!! (yes, that's including
Rebecca Romjin-Stamos, ya'll!). Anyway, if you want to know more or ask
him some questions, click below (contains SPOILERS): Click

yeah, Harry from AICN was also flown out to the screening with director
John McTiernan himself, and he also wrote up a review of his experience here.

| Ratner to direct "Red Dragon?" |
June 8, 2001 |
| Source: Ain't It Cool News I'm reading Thomas Harris' RED DRAGON as we speak (at the recommendation of my wife, who loved it) and suddenly have become interested in this film. I didn't like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS (OK, OK, let the flaming e-mails begin...) or HANNIBAL much but for some reason DRAGON is drawing me in where the others left me yawning. With that, I am hesitant about the choice of Brett Ratner as a director. I think he's got a wonderful visual style but much like Michael Bay (another choice for director, who turned the role down) I just don't believe his style matches the film. Then again, I like Ratner and in some ways think he could really surprise all the doubters with a seriously sick, twisted and suspenseful film (I've heard Ted Tally's screenplay is absolutely brilliant). Plus, he's the guy who could talk Nicolas Cage into playing Detective Will Graham. Now, who will be playing a young Hannibal Lecter?...

| Dustin Hoffman to direct |
June 8, 2001 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter Academy Award winner Dustin Hoffman will step behind the camera and direct the feature film adaptation of Scott Turow's legal novel PERSONAL INJURIES, in which he is also set to star. INJURIES revolves around an attorney (Hoffman) used in a sting by the FBI to catch attorneys bribing judges for decisions. This marks the first time in Hoffman's storied career that he will direct a film. He is currently filming BABY'S IN BLACK with Susan Sarandon for director Brad Silberling (CITY OF ANGELS), which is due out in Spring, 2002.

June 8, 2001 |
| Source:
The DVD Clinic The one and only Dr. Drew is back on the scene to bring you the latest and greatest in the world of
DVDs.I'll step aside and let the good doctor work his magic: Godfather
DVD news
I mentioned last week that the GODFATHER trilogy was rumored to be in the works for a late 2001 release and I can now make you an offer you can’t refuse...okay, that’s pretty lame but I had to throw that in. While Paramount has yet to make an official announcement, October 9th is now the day all DVD fanatics have been waiting for. I don’t know all the details but you can expect a 4-disc set, with the fourth disc reserved exclusively for extras and added supplements. Should be huge.
Baz
Luhrmann makes bold DVD predicitions
In a recent interview, Luhrman claimed that the DVD release of MOULIN ROUGE will give FIGHT CLUB a run for its money as one of the greatest DVDs of all time. Expect a double disc set which will allow viewers to watch the entire film with just the musical numbers in addition to a Pop Up Video type featurette which will provide on screen information about set and costume designs. Can Baz pull it off? We’ll have to wait and see.
The
Grinch cover art
Even though it’s not exactly the "biggest" of news items, fans of the movie will want to check out the
box cover for the upcoming DVD release of DR. SEUSS’ HOW THE GRINCH STOLE CHRISTMAS. After having checked it
out myself, my retinas are still burning from staring at the neon green colors. Be sure to have some sunglasses handy before giving it a look. It’s due out November 20th.

New Line
Infinifilm series Easter Egg
Wanna sneak peak at the new Infinifilm brand of DVDs? In what might be considered the mother of all DVD Easter eggs, New Line has actually hidden a first look release of the series on the recently released
Little Nicky. To access the option, go to the Special Features menu and keep pressing the Left button until a halo appears over Adam Sandler's head. Press Enter and you'll be shown a trailer for Lord of the Rings (a cool option in itself). After the trailer, keep pressing Left until another halo appears over Sandler's head. This time, press Left, down then Right and then Enter. Once the movie starts, press skip and the Infinifilm version of the movie will start.
New
releases announced!
THE BROTHERS (July 31st), THE MEXICAN (August 7th), KRAMER VS. KRAMER, WILLY WONKA AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY

| "Spider-Man" trailer/poster/DVD news |
June 7, 2001 |
| Source: Spider-Man Hype A scooper wrote in to Spider-Man Hype and claimed he struck up an odd friendship
with a Sony exec after they contacted him with a cease and desist order for selling Spidey
merchandise on E-Bay. After chatting with the Sony contact, he was able to ascertain
the following information: the SPIDER-MAN teaser trailer will be attached to the
release of FINAL FANTASY with a teaser poster following shortly thereafter. He also
found out that the DVD is already being prepped for a Christmas 2002 release and footage
is already being edited for extra features to be included on the disc. So how much
of this is true? Don't know. The marketing department at Sony/Columbia is in a
little bit of hot water right now, so they haven't been very quick to confirm or deny, but
it sounds halfway reasonable to me. People watching FINAL FANTASY (as with
SPIDER-MAN, a Sony release) are the target audience for Spidey and I'd imagine they'd want
to get in a trailer sometime this summer, so why not now? I'll keep digging and let
you know if I get a confirmation.

| File under major rumor.... |
June 7, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney I
have yet to confirm the following as truth, but I will throw it out there for debate
amongst the community. It may not be true but it certainly would be an interesting
experiment in filmmaking. Here's what a scooper who will remain anonymous told me:
Guy Ritchie (whose STAR with wife Madonna will premiere on BMW Films soon) has taken a 16 year old
London prodigy named Thomas Conroy under his wing and will produce and co-direct a film
entitled THE RUNNER that the boy has written. Paramount Pictures is currently
negotiating with Ritchie and his Ska Films production company to finance the film but
understandably wants Ritchie to take over the majority of the directing duties. The
film would not be a major big budget film but an experimental indie production along the
lines of TIMECODE. So is any of this
true? I have heard neither a denial nor a confirmation from Paramount. I
initially blew this off as a complete rumor but after discussing the matter with the
scooper further, there are things that would make me believe there is some truth to this.
I will definitely try to find out more information and let you know how things
progress, but for now take this strictly as an entertaining RUMOR!

| "Undercover Brother" script review |
June 7, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney That
rapscallion 'Honest Abe' is up to his old tricks again. Nobody noticed as the 16th
President of the United States of America walked right out with a copy of the script for
the upcoming Dave Chappelle/Eddie Griffin comedy UNDERCOVER BROTHER. Here's is his positive
review with a few minor spoilers:
"I had no idea what this was when I first started
reading it, just that Dave Chappelle was part of the cast. That was enough for me to dive
in and....it was a worthwhile plunge. Dave is part of an elite team, headed by UNDERCOVER
BROTHER whose purpose is to prevent the conspiracies of "the Man" from keeping
honest hard working brothers down. Also part of the team is Conspiracy Brother (Dave's
role, I believe) who tries to sift through all the lies of "the Man" and get at
the truth. Denise Richards is along for the laughs as well. Don't walk into this movie
expecting to be enlightened. Walk in and leave your brain at the door. This is just a
plain old comedy. Nothing weird or gross. Just funny, funny, funny. This is one of the few
scripts where I was literally shaking my head and shouting "damm!!!" at some of
the jokes. I have a feeling that this movie won't be too well received but will develop a
following based on word of mouth instead and if Dave can deliver like he did in HALF
BAKED, then I know I will be there opening weekend."

| All "Signs" point to Ruffalo |
June 7, 2001 |
| Source: Variety Does the name Mark Ruffalo ring a bell to you? Maybe not yet, despite
his critically lauded performance in Kenneth Lonergan's YOU CAN COUNT ON ME, but next
year, trust me, you will. Ruffalo's upcoming films include WINDTALKERS, with Nicolas
Cage and John Woo, A VIEW FROM THE TOP with Gwyneth Paltrow and he is currently starring
alongside Robert Redford and James Gandolfini in Rod Lurie's UNTITLED PRISON FILM
(formerly titled THE CASTLE). From three high profile projects to a fourth, Ruffalo
now negotiation to join Mel Gibson in M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller SIGNS. As
we've reported here before, not much is known about SIGNS other than it revolves around a
farmer and the mysterious crop circles that appear on his Bucks County, PA farm.
Even though it's a loooong way off, I already can't wait to see this film.

| "Blade 2" script review |
June 5, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney 'Honest Abe' has a lot of scripts on his plate and today he shares
with us his thoughts on BLADE 2: BLOODHUNT. Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristoffersen
will return in the sequel to be directed by Guillermo Del Toro and Abe shares his
thoughts:
"When the script
for the sequel to Blade landed in front of me, I was hesitant to read it because after all,
how could they top the original? But I am an uber movie geek boy and after delaying a few
days, I sat down and gobbled it up. In one word, "helli-cool"!!!!!
The script rocks from the opening sequence. It's
a worthy follow-up, taking place 18 months after the events of the first movie. The only
thing missing (but it didn't bug me) was the female doctor from the first movie is no
where to be seen, much less even mentioned. After the opening sequence, where we are
introduced to Jared Nomak, a "reaper" vampire. Blade begins his rescue mission
of Whistler. He didn't die after all. (Remember, we only heard the gunshot, we didn't
actually see Whistler die.) Blade is contacted by the vampire council because they want to
team up with him to stop Nomak and his band of reapers. It seems that the reapers don't
descriminate among who they kill, human and vampire alike. So, it's a race against time
for Blade and the Bloodpack (one of whom becomes his love interest) to track down Nomak
before all hell breaks loose. With a twist here and a turn here and a double cross or two,
this made for a very lively read. I can't wait to see this movie, even though I'll have to
wait till next year now. Probably what I enjoyed best about this was the fact that Blade,
while still a tight-ass, did manage to display an occasional dry comment of sarcasm or
wit. He was a bit more relaxed this time. Blade: Bloodhunt will not disappoint!"

| Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio? |
June 5, 2001 |
| Source: Variety Intent to
turn every famous athlete's biography and comic book superhero into a feature film,
Hollywood has bought the rights to yet another legendary sports star, Joe DiMaggio.
Christopher Wilkinson and Stephen Rivele (who also wrote ALI) have signed to write
a script based on the biography JOE DIMAGGIO: A HERO'S LIFE (not necessarily the name of
the film which is still untitled). The direction the script will take is yet to be
seen, but hopefully they will focus on the fact that he screwed Marilyn Monroe senseless. Now that's a movie I'd like to see.

| "Changing Lanes" script review |
June
4, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney 'Honest
Abe' is back on the scene, this time with a review of the script for the
Ben Affleck / Sam Jackson thriller CHANGING LANES. Let's see what the ex-president has to say for himself:
Road Rage: The Movie is one way critics will describe this Ben Affleck/Samuel L. Jackson flick. It's essentially about two men whose lives are headed in different directions. When they collide (literally) they both want what's theirs. They want revenge. And the extent they go to is, well, extreme. Samuel Jackson is on the verge of losing a custody battle for his two boys. On the way to the courthouse to plead his case with proof he's cleaned up his life, he gets in an accident with an attorney played by Ben Affleck. It's only a few minutes but Samuel winds up late for his court appearance and loses his kids. Meanwhile, Ben is having a conflict in representing his client and his firm. Sam blames Ben for losing his kids and Ben needs a file back that Sam snatched when Ben tried to leave the accident. I won't go into details on just how these two men go about attempting to ruin each other's lives but you will say what I said.....Damm! I guess one way to think of this movie would be to think of the recently released comedy (I guess) "WHAT'S THE WORST THAT COULD HAPPEN?" If that movie was a drama, it would be Changing Lanes. While not a bad read, there are moments where I was thinking to myself, "come on guys, just work it out". Some tight editing will be required. Bottom line: Well, it's Sammy Jackson and you really can't go wrong with Sammy. Even if the movie itself bites, Sammy always delivers. I confess to being a Ben Affleck fan too. 8 bucks? I'm not sure. But unless the trailer sucks assimus maximus (I know I keep using that phrase but I likes the sound of it), I will shell out at least 5 bucks for a matinee.

how to see this thing go down. The play is about these geeks waiting in
line for the premiere of the PHANTOM MENACE a couple of years ago. Sounds
funny :)

Line, One Mission, Two Losers"

| MTV Movie Awards
wrap-up |
June 4, 2001 |
| Source: Associated Press If you're hardcore about your
spoilers, you may want to skip this news item (if you're that prudish about the MTV Movie Awards, you need to loosen up...). The MTV Movie Awards were taped this weekend for airing this Thursday at 9pm. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon and Kirsten
Dunst, musical guests included Dave Matthews Band, Weezer and that version of "Lady Marmalade" from MOULIN ROUGE that would have Patti LaBelle rolling over in her grave (if she were dead). But on to the winners...much like the Academy Awards, GLADIATOR took home BEST FILM and Julia Roberts won Best Female Performance for ERIN
BROCKOVICH. Unlike the Oscars, Cameron Diaz won for Best Dance Sequence and Jim Carrey (does he win an MTV award every year?) as Best Villain. There were some funny skits poking fun at THE MUMMY RETURNS, GLADIATOR and CAST AWAY. I
can't get into major detail here but if you're that curious to see what happens or just want to stare at Kirsten
Dunst, check out MTV this Thursday night.

| Phony
Columbia movie reviews? |
June 4, 2001 |
| Source: Newsweek Newsweek magazine will report in Monday's edition that Columbia Pictures quoted praise from a fictional movie critic on their films' marketing material. "David Manning" is not a really a critic for the The Ridgefield Press, but in fact was a creation of marketing executives who credited the character with laudings for movies otherwise slammed by critics, like A KNIGHT'S TALE (Heath Ledger is "this year's hottest new star!") and THE ANIMAL ("another winner!"). Sony, Columbia's parent company, called the idea a "foolish" decision and announced plans to remove all advertisements featuring quotes from the fictional Manning. As Data from GOONIES says:
"Shame, shame, know your name!"
