Pitt / Aronofsky film hits snag

August 31, 2001

Source: Variety

For me, the Brad Pitt/Darren Aronofsky collaboration, THE LAST MAN, was one of the most anticipated films currently in development.  I don't care what you say, Brad Pitt is a cool dude.  Sure, he's made some crummy movies, but here's a guy who's not afraid to take a chance.  What other leading man would've made FIGHT CLUB or pretended to be abducted for a stunt on JACKASS?  And I don't think I really have to defend Aronofsky.  He's made two kick-ass films (REQUIEM FOR A DREAM and PI) and the idea that he's looking to make a "sci-fi epic" is a dream come true.  But, we have a bit of bad news to report....

THE LAST MAN was scheduled to begin shooting in just a few months. Warner Bros. and Aronofsky then decided that they wanted to wait for actress Cate Blanchett's schedule to free up and in the meanwhile, fine tune the script.  Now the film is looking at a summer 2002 kickoff.  While I'm disappointed by the news that the film is further away than I had anticipated, it's good to hear that there are still people in Hollywood that care about their projects.  Why rush and put out a piece of shit?  If the script still needs work and Cate is really the right person for the part, do what you have to do.  If that means delaying the film a few months, fine.  As long as the end justifies the means.

Another interesting tidbit in the article from Variety was Pitt's reteaming with David Fincher.  They claim the director is set to begin work with Brad again in fall of 2002 on SEARED, "A dismal and disturbing look behind the scenes of the food industry."  SEARED is based on the novel KITCHEN CONFIDENTIAL: ADVENTURES IN THE CULUNARY UNDERBELLY by Anthony Bourdain.  While it may sound like a boring movie, read the book.  It's pretty sick, twisted stuff (perfect for a Fincher movie!).

Duchovny joins Soderbergh?

August 31, 2001

Source: David-Duchovny.com

The fine folks from the David Duchovny fansite wrote in to say that in the latest issue of US Weekly magazine, it is being reported that Mulder himself has signed on to star in Steven Soderbergh's next film, HOW TO SURVIVE A HOTEL ROOM FIRE.  I have not been able to confirm that this is in fact reported in US Weekly (who knew that magazine would come in handy?...) but I have no reason to believe that DD Online would start rumors like this.   Catherine Keener has already signed on to star in HOTEL ROOM, which is a "sequel" of sorts to Soderbergh's critically acclaimed film SEX, LIES AND VIDEOTAPE.  If anyone reads US Weekly, first of all, shame on you.  Secondly, please write in and let us know exactly what the article says about Duchovny's involvement.  This would not be the first time the ex-X-Filer has starred in something racy.  The actor used to host Showtime's softcore series THE RED SHOE DIARIES before hitting it big.

From the writer of "Armageddon" comes...

August 31, 2001

Source: Variety

They're still letting this guy make movies?!  Jonathan Hensleigh, the executive producer behind three of the worst films ever, GONE IN SIXTY SECONDS, ARMAGEDDON (which he also wrote) and CON AIR, is set to make his directorial debut with BOUNTY KILLER.  If you think this is gonna be different than either of those three movies, read this synopsis from Variety:

"A violent bounty hunter comes to a small town to collect a reward and is recruited by a tough young woman to save the community. In the process, the bounty hunter unlocks the secrets of his past."

Sounds like another winner!  More bad news is that Hensleigh is currently "reconceiving" the old GEMINI MAN project that has been stalled at Disney forever.  And that was a concept that had so much promise... The one good thing is that Universal managed to keep this guy away from THE INCREDIBLE HULK, which he had expressed interest in directing.  They did the smart thing and got Ang Lee to direct.

Carvey and Brolin team for "Disguise"

August 31, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE alum Dana Carvey will team with James "P.W." Brolin for the comedy MASTER OF DISGUISE.  The film revolves around a man (Carvey) who learns that his roots trace back to "world-renowned masters of disquise" and must harness his new found gift to free his parents from a man looking to exploit their talent.  The project will be directed by rookie Perry Andelin Blake.  I'll be interested to see what Carvey does with this film.  He's one of the few stars from the SNL 90s that failed to have a lucrative career afterwards.  He did have success with the WAYNE'S WORLD films but beyond that there was just nothing to speak of. Carvey truly is and was a very funny guy but that never really came across on the big screen.

Ruffalo drops "Signs"

August 31, 2001

Source: Variety

Mark Ruffalo, star or YOU CAN COUNT ON ME and the upcoming Robert Redford film THE LAST CASTLE, has dropped out of M. Night Shyamalan's film SIGNS for medical reasons.  SIGNS was set to begin shooting this October in Bucks County, Pennsylvania.  The actor's reps said this regarding the incident:

"He recently had a minor cyst, termed acoustic neuroma, removed from his inner ear. The procedure was a success, and he expects a full recovery."

Nevertheless, Ruffalo and his doctors thought it best that he take a break from filmmaking and sadly enough SIGNS had to go.  Look for a replacement to be announced within the next few days and the film is still scheduled to begin this October with Mel Gibson starring.  Hey, M. Night!  How about throwing your old pal Joey Baloney a bone!  I'm not that far from Pennsylvania and my schedule is pretty free.  I've got very limited acting experience, but I'm willing to learn... ;)

BMW Films mystery revealed

August 31, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney

Last week, we gave you a heads-up to watch the sub-plots for that BMW Films short film series. We also provided a code that if you deciphered, led to a secret location in New York City.  The code revealed a day and location (August 23rd, Madison and 23rd in New York City) where some shite was gonna go down.  If you weren't able to make it, here's what you missed.  Basically it was just a promotional thing with a guy in a trench coat running down the street and one of the signature BMW cars with bullet holes and stuff.  Nothing too exciting.  But onlookers were treated to posters and interestingly enough (the whole reason behind this promotion) DVDs of the short film series.  No official word yet on when the DVDs will be released for sale to the public but expect word soon.  If anyone was lucky enough to grab one of these discs, send me an e-mail and let me know what's on that puppy.

Hanks joins DiCaprio/Spielberg!

August 30, 2001

Source: Variety

CATCH ME IF YOU CAN has slowly creeped its way up my anticipation meter, going from a "this looks pretty cool" a few months ago to "I have got to see this!" today. Now that Steven Spielberg has signed himself on to direct (I guess it's official...) he figured he might as well get some of the best talent around. Where's a good place to start?  Let's see...how about one of his good friends, Mr. Tom Hanks.  DreamWorks is currently negotiating with Hanks to star (take that Leonardo DiCaprio!) in CATCH as the FBI agent that eventually caught and befriended conman Frank Abangale Jr. (DiCaprio).  To be honest, I'm surprised Leo would approve of this kind of move considering he would have been the major star (or "topline" as Variety puts it) in the film but now will take second billing to multiple Oscar winner Hanks.

Can I just say how pleased I am that Spielberg has moved away from "heavy" movies like AMISTAD, SCHINDLER'S LIST and SAVING PRIVATE RYAN? Now, before the angry e-mails get started, let me also say that I liked all those films but they were just so depressing.  Even though I liked AI a lot less than any of those 3 films, I appreciated that the man was doing something different.  Now it seems we're in a brand-new Spielberg era - meaningless fun.  The kind of films I like best.  His next film is the MINORITY REPORT with Tom Cruise followed directly by CATCH ME IF YOU CAN with Tom Hanks.  Good stuff!  I just hope that MEMOIRS OF A GEISHA doesn't get made cause that sounds like a colossal bore.

Cruise goes "Mountain" climbing

August 30, 2001

Source: Variety, Hollywood Reporter

Tom Cruise is looking for his first post-MINORITY REPORT project and it looks like Anthony Minghella's (THE ENGLISH PATIENT) COLD MOUNTAIN is a frontrunner.  Tommy Boy is in "early negotiations" to star in MOUNTAIN as Confederate soldier, Inman, a role that had piqued the interest of Matt Damon and Brad Pitt.  Also looking to join the production is Cruise's JERRY MAGUIRE co-star Renee Zellweger who is trying to fit this and the film adaptation of Broadway's CHICAGO into her busy schedule.

COLD MOUNTAIN is based on the novel by Charles Frazier and revolves around wounded Inman, struggling to make it home to North Carolina, and his wife Ada (Zellweger), during the last days of the Civil War.  The film has been in development since 1997, when Minghella first became interested but wound up filming THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY first.  Tom Cruise has VANILLA SKY coming this December and is currently finishing up work on Spielberg's REPORT.

Bullock/Grant romantic comedy

August 30, 2001

Source: Variety

Sandra Bullock and Hugh Grant have combined forces to film a romantic comedy in an attempt to get me to jump off a bridge to my watery death. The script, from writer Marc Lawrence (who brought us such winners as MISS CONGENIALITY and MICKEY BLUE EYES), revolves around a neurotic lawyer (Bullock) who falls for her reckless boss.  Let me see if I can guess how this film will end...Sandra will grow tired of Hugh's wild ways and force herself to walk away (despite what her emotions tell her).  Hugh will realize he has lost the only woman that ever meant something to him and will chase after Sandra, who at this time has quit the law firm.  There we will have a shot of Hugh running down a hallway after Sandra who's about to get in a taxi outside the building.  He'll yell her name and "Wait!"  She'll pause (not wanting to look) and say "What do you want?"  This is when Hugh does on his "I can't stand being without you" soliloquy that will (theoretically) make every female in the audience reach for their Kleenex.  Sandra will drop her bags and the two will share a loving embrace much to the amusement of the cab driver (played by Reginald Vel Johnson of DIE HARD and FAMILY MATTERS fame) who begins clapping and cheering as Hugh spins Sandra around in a hug while the exit music (preferrably Faith Hill) begins to play.

Anyway, it's quite obvious I have a lot of time on my hands (actually the scary thing is I'm very busy!).  The UNTITLED film will begin filming this February in New York (*in robotic voice* "Must. Sabotage. The shoot.") and is aiming for a Christmas 2002 release date.  If anyone needs me, I'll be sitting on the edge of the Verrazano Bridge.

2001 Oscar odds

August 30, 2001

Source: Coming Soon; LA Times

Sure it's a little early to begin thinking about the 2001 Oscars considering most films eligible haven't been released yet, but that hasn't stopped the Los Angeles Times from printing their list of odds for Best Picture nominees.  Here's the five films they rate as current odds-on leaders with long-shots listed below:

ALI: (4-1 odds)
A BEAUTIFUL MIND: (6-1 odds)
THE MAJESTIC: (8-1 odds)
THE SHIPPING NEWS: (10-1 odds)
SHREK: (12-1 odds)

Long-shots: MEMENTO (40-1) and MOULIN ROUGE (50-1)

Considering I have seen only one of the movies listed above (I know, I know, I should really see SHREK....), I'm not really at liberty to agree or disagree with what they suggest.  It certainly sounds like what everyone else has been buzzing about.  The only surprise for me was to see SHREK with such favorable odds and that MEMENTO wasn't as far back as I worried.  If there is any justice in the Academy world (which after the ALMOST FAMOUS robbery of this year, I'm convinced there isn't), MEMENTO will be nominated for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay and Best Actor for Guy Pierce.  So it is said, so it should be done.

"Daredevil" casting rumors

August 29, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney and Popcorn

First of all, producer Gary Foster recently spoke to the Popcorn website and said this about his possible leading men as DAREDEVIL: “I'd like to see Edward Norton do this movie, I'd like to see Guy Pearce do this movie, I'd like to see Matt Damon. There are a lot of people who would be great - Mark Wahlberg.

And file this story under the "Almost Assuredly a Rumor" category.  I'm pretty sure there's not much truth to this rumor at all (and God help us if there is) but it's a slow news day so what the heck.  I got a scoop today from someone named 'Mathsman' (does anyone remember Mathman from that old PBS show SQUARE ONE? Somebody help me out here...) who claims to have the inside track on who's being cast in DAREDEVIL.  Let's give a listen to his delusional rantings ;)

"I have some news on a project I think you might be interested, DAREDEVIL. Although rumored to be taking on a role, Al Pacino hasn't signed on yet. Reason? Producers want this to be a "real" adaptation. i.e. not see a star up there when they should be seeing characters. Therefore, it's highly likely the cast of the film will go to unknowns. The first major bit of casting, which I expect could be officially announced soon, has gone to little-known TV actor Drake Hogestyn (I think he's playing the lead hero, Drakes picture is attached) Although he is unknown to movie audiences, Hogestyn has played John Black on Days of Our Lives for several seasons. Nothing's in stone yet - but expect Drake's name on a marquee sign soon. Pacino's involvement will be more clear soon too.

Mathsman"

Not only is this a first-time scooper, this just doesn't seem to make much sense to me.  I've heard of unknowns before but usually when you pick an unknown you get a young up-and-comer; a fresh face that'll sure to be a big name star, NOT an old soap star.  Besides, exactly what role would Al Pacino be up for? Bullseye?  Elektra?  Anyway, if producers want to make this guy a happy camper THEY WILL CAST GUY PEARCE AS MATT MURDOCK / DAREDEVIL!  DO IT!!!

Silver comments on Matrix sequels / Aaliyah

August 29, 2001

Source: Coming Soon

Producer of THE MATRIX, Joel Silver, released a statement on Tuesday regarding the passing of singer/actress Aaliyah, who was set to star in the two MATRIX sequels. He said:

"We are all deeply saddened by this tragedy. Aaliyah's acting career was just blossoming. She had remarkable talent and charisma and great potential. The Wachowskis and I, as well as the production executives at Warner Bros. Pictures, were looking forward to working with her in the two Matrix films as well as many other future projects. Her passing is a tremendous loss. Our hearts go out to her loved ones."

He went on to say that while shooting had begun on THE MATRIX RELOADED, Aaliyah was not due to begin filming the majority of her scenes until September.  There has been no decision to how to handle the actresses departure.   The star had been in training for some time to prepare for this role and another actress may need more than a few week's time to be able to physically take on this role. Only time shall tell...

"Einstein's Brain" the movie?!

August 29, 2001

Source: Variety

No, this isn't a cheesy horror film where the brain of Albert Einstein comes back from the dead to haunt the morbidly stupid (although the finished film could very well be horrific). It's actually based on the novel DRIVING MR. ALBERT: A TRIP ACROSS AMERICA WITH EINSTEIN'S BRAIN by Michael Paterniti and its truly on of the most bizarre concepts for a film I've ever heard.  And to lend more credence to that old saying "truth is stranger than fiction" - it's a true story.  The novel is being adapted into a screenplay by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski who also brought you THE PEOPLE VS. LARRY FLYNT, THE MAN ON THE MOON and *cough*SCREWED*cough*.  The story revolves around the pathologist who performed Albert Einstein and his journey across the United States with the scientist's brain in a Tupperware bowl.  I'm not sure how they plan to turn this into a watchable movie but I'm always curious to see.  The article on which the novel was based appeared in Harper's Bazaar in 1997 and won the National Magazine Award for feature writing.

"I Spy" Famke

August 28, 2001

Source: Variety

While I'm sad that Famke (who in my opinion, should drop the Janssen and be known simply as "Famke") dropped out of playing the lead villainess Serleena in MEN IN BLACK 2, it's good to hear she's back up on her feet and ready to grace the silver screen.   The always beautiful Famke will star alongside Owen Wilson and Eddie Murphy in the upcoming film version of the 60s TV show I SPY.  SPY, to be directed by Betty Thomas (DR. DOLITTLE), revolves around a government agent paired with a pro athelete turned spy.   There was no mention in the Variety article which role she would be playing other than it would be the female lead.  Famke has DON'T SAY A WORD, with Michael Douglas, coming out at the end of September and the sequel to X-MEN is expected to begin pre-production towards the beginning of 2002.

"Almost Famous" special edition DVD

Source: Digital Bits

If you bought the DVD version of ALMOST FAMOUS that was released earlier this year then you've now got yourself a shiny new drink coaster.  Toss that hunk-a-junk aside and get yourself ready for ALMOST FAMOUS: THE BOOTLEG CUT (THE DIRECTOR'S EDITION), a 3-disc (!!) set which includes one disc for the movie, one for extras and another audio disc of Stillwater songs.  I should note that this has not been officially announced by either DreamWorks or Cameron Crowe's posse, so this isn't 100% official yet.  We do know that Cameron is working on a "director's edition" but is this it?  I sure hope so, cause this looks pretty damn cool.  Here's the word from the Bits:

"Almost Famous Untitled: The Bootleg Cut (Director's Edition) is a 3-Disc set (2 DVDs and 1 music CD) that includes a NEW Director's version, the original Academy Award winning version and an additional music CD of 6 never before released songs by Stillwater! Available at the S.R.P. of $34.99, the Director's Edition includes 36 minutes of never before seen footage! Exciting new bonus features on the DVD include a new director's commentary, cast audition tapes, deleted scenes, the shooting script, new menu music by Nancy Wilson and much more."

Frankenheimer and Gibson team

August 28, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Mel Gibson and his production company, Icon Productions, have acquired the rights to the diamond heist film SKELETON'S COAST, with John Frankenheimer set to direct.   The film had been languishing in development hell over at Sony for some time.   SKELETON'S is a big budget action flick that revolves around a diamond heist in Africa.  It is unknown whether Gibson picked up the project as a potential starring role but it is unlikely considering the star's upcoming busy slate.  His next film, SIGNS with wrietr/director M. Night Shymalan, is set to begin filming this October in Bucks County, PA.  Frankenheimer should begin work on his next directorial assignment, EXORCIST: DOMINION, shortly.

Young Father Merrin cast?

August 28, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney

A scooper named 'Sarah' sent in this interesting tidbit of information on who might have been cast as the young Father Merrin in John Frankenheimer's prequel, EXORCIST: DOMINION. Here's what she had to say:

"Some casting for the next EXORCIST movie took place here on Friday, and I thought you might be interested in what went on. Whilst the turn up was quite an eye-ful, I was quite happy to see cuter than cute Kerr Smith (Jack on DAWSON'S CREEK) hanging around. I talked to someone Loews Country Club Hills Theatres after his appearance, and he said he is up for the role of Father Merrin in the movie. It's not official, but he seems to have what they are looking for. Bit of a step up from the WB to EXORCIST hey. Most of the casting was for young dark boys - to play Africans in prequel scenes. I'll let you know if I hear any more on Kerr Smith's commitment to the film."

Kerr Smith spoke at this year's Fangoria Convention (plugging some vampire movie) and judging by the fans' reaction to the DAWSON'S CREEK star, this might not be a great move for the WB...Let's keep in mind that this is merely a rumor at this point and so far, no one has been officially cast in the film (not even Alec Baldwin).

Fincher, Cage get "Hard Boiled"

August 27, 2001

Source: Variety

If you haven't read the graphic novel HARD BOILED (written by Frank Miller and illustrated by Geoff Darrow), do yourself a favor and read it NOW.  Not only is it an amazing read, you'll be one step ahead of the game when David Fincher's HARD BOILED is finally released. It is reported that Finch will direct BOILED, with Nicolas Cage attached to star, after he finishes work on his expected next project SEARED.  The plot of HARD BOILED is way to complicated to get into here, but what else do you need to know?  The director of FIGHT CLUB and SEVEN; based on a graphic novel from the writer of THE DARK KNIGHT RETURNS and BATMAN: YEAR ONE; the illustrator of THE MATRIX; starring Nic Cage...if this doesn't get you hot and bothered I don't know what to tell you.  Fincher is currently hard at work on post-production on his next film, PANIC ROOM, starring Jodie Foster.

Aaliyah: 1979-2001

August 27, 2001

Source: Associated Press

Singer/Actress Aaliyah died on Saturday in a plane crash on her way back from the Bahamas where she was filming a music video.  Since I'm not very good as this type of thing, I'll let the seasoned professionals at the Associated Press be the bearers of bad tidings:

"R&B singer and actress Aaliyah died Saturday along with seven others when a small plane that was to carry them back to the United States crashed after takeoff in the Bahamas, authorities said.

The 22-year-old artist was among nine on board the twin-engine Cessna and had come to the Bahamas to shoot a music video, officials said. One critically injured survivor was flown to Florida for treatment, authorities said.

``We find it devastating and most unfortunate that after having this world-famous star Aaliyah and her crew select the Bahamas as their choice location for her latest video, the project has climaxed on such a tragic note,'' said Minister of Tourism Tommy Turnquest, who happened to be visiting Abaco Island, where the plane went down.

Aaliyah, of Detroit, was to begin shooting the video for ``Rock The Boat'' this month in Miami, according to her Web site. It was not clear whether she filmed that video while in the Bahamas.

The singer was born Aaliyah Haughton on January 16, 1979 in New York. She began performing at the young age of 11 when she sang on stage with Gladys Knight's troupe in Las Vegas. Her first album, ``Age Ain't Nothing But A Number,'' came out when she was 15 years old. She has collaborated with R&B singer R. Kelly, who produced her debut album and wrote many of the songs that appeared on it.

By age 18, Aaliyah had two hit records to her name.

Aaliyah's song ``Try Again'' earned her a Grammy nomination this year for best female R&B vocalist. She made her feature acting debut in the film ROMEO MUST DIE She also had signed on to appear in two sequels to the high-tech thriller THE MATRIX.

``She was like one of my daughters, she was one of the sweetest girls in the world,'' said Grammy-winning producer, arranger and composer Quincy Jones. ``She vacationed with me and my family together in Fiji. I loved her and respected her and I am absolutely devastated.''

Bahamian police Superintendent Basil Rahming said the other passengers killed included Scott Gallin, 41; Keith Wallace, 49, of Los Angeles; Douglas Kratz, 28, a representative for Virgin Records, and Eric Foreman, 29, both of Hollywood, Calif.; Gina Smith, 29, of New Jersey; and Christopher Maldonado, 32, of New York. The plane's pilot, identified only as L. Marael, also died.

The survivor was identified by police as Anthony Dodd, 34, of Los Angeles.

The private plane was leaving the Marsh Harbour airport on a trip to Opa-locka, Fla. when it went down Saturday evening, said police spokesman Marvin Dames. Marsh Harbour is located about 100 miles north of Nassau.

After the crash, the mangled twin-engine plane rested about 75 yards from the end of the runway in a marshy area. Workers carried away badly burned bodies and laid them nearby. Pieces of the plane were strewn about the crash site.

Abaco Island Chief Councilor Silbert Mills said those killed included two women and six men. He said he happened to be at the airport and saw the plane taxi out. The next thing he knew, the plane was on the ground. He said he helped rescue the injured.

``I pulled one from the aircraft, and he was screaming,'' Mills said. ``He said he was in a lot of pain.''

The cause of the crash was unclear. Kathleen Bergen, a spokeswoman for the Federal Aviation Administration in Atlanta, said the plane was a Cessna 402 owned by Skystream, a company based in Pembroke Pines, Fla. She said the plane crashed at the end of the airport's runway at 6:50 p.m.The cause of the crash was unclear. It's sad enough to see a Hollywood veteran pass but when a young girl who hadn't yet reached the peak of her career dies, it really is a damn shame.   A lot of people have written in asking what's going to happen regarding THE MATRIX sequels.  At this point, I honestly don't know, and really don't care.  Now's not the time to be worrying about that shit.

Sonnenfeld's next is...

August 27, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

After finishing work on MEN IN BLACK 2, director Barry Sonnenfeld will set his sights on adapting the novel MOIST, by author Mark Haskell Smith, into a feature film for DreamWorks.  The film revolves around a morgue worker transporting a severed limb across country - while the owner of said limb is hunting down the man trying to get his appendage back. Sonnenfeld's next film, BIG TROUBLE (based on the novel by columnist Dave Barry) opens on September 21st.  I was watching THROW MOMMA FROM THE TRAIN this weekend and it dawned on me that Sonnenfeld should take a break from directing and get back to his roots at cinematography.  That's really where the man did his best work.

Miramax won't pay "Rent"

August 27, 2001

Source: Variety

Due to financial considerations, Miramax Films has decided to pull the plug on a potential live-action film based on the Broadway hit RENT.  It was assumed that Spike Lee would direct the film although he had never officially signed on to the project.  Lee had spoken with Latin crooner Marc Anthony about a possible starring role and had been auditioning other actors and actresses in New York City for months.  Miramax and Lee both refused to comment on the issue. While RENT is going the way of the dinosaur (here's one guy who's not too broken up by the news), Miramax is still hard at work on its adaptation of CHICAGO, set to star Catherine Zeta-Jones and possibly Renee Zellweger.
