| Cage is "Hellblazer"!! |
October 26, 2001 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter Nicolas Cage has finally signed on to star in a film based on a popular
comic-book after failing to close a deal with projects like GHOST RIDER and SUPERMAN
LIVES. That film? - HELLBLAZER, based on the DC comic CONSTANTINE. If you
think that's cool, remember that this film's gonna be directed by ultra-sleek eye-candy
director Tarsem, who single-handedly made THE
CELL a cool-as-all-shit movie. With Nic Cage, Tarsem and producers Richard and
Laura Shuler-Donner (X-MEN) HELLBLAZER is
primed to kick some major arse. In case you're not down with the book it basically
follows a character named John Constantine, an anti-hero who "dabbles in the
occult" and in the film version, will team with a female police officer to do battle
against evil. March 1st has been penciled in as a preliminary start date and its
interesting to note that Tarsem will move directly from this project to his next - an
independent film called THE FALL. I tried to find out more about it but to no avail.
If anyone out there knows more about this script, send your info to scoops@joblo.com. It is unknown at this point
whether Cage could still star in GHOST RIDER sometime down the line or even if that
project is still moving ahead (both Cage and director Stephen Norrington have moved on to
other things).

| Branagh joins "Harry Potter" |
October 26, 2001 |
| Source: Variety Kenneth
Branagh has signed on to play the villain (??? Is that for sure? I've never read the
Harry Potter books...) in HARRY POTTER AND THE CHAMBER OF SECRETS, which will begin
filming a mere two days after the release of the first POTTER film on November 16th.
Branagh will play Gilderoy Lockhart (and I'm quoting other sources here cause I
know nothing about Harry Potter) "a charming, handsome golden-haired
wizard...enlisted to teach at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizadry as Professor of
Defense Against the Dark Arts." Apparently, Lockhart is "regarded by many
as a fraud and a charlatan" which leads me to believe he turns out to be not such a
nice guy. The entire cast and crew of the first film will return including director
Chris Columbus. SECRETS is being scheduled for a Thanksgiving 2002 release date.

| Zellweger joins "Cinderella" |
October 26, 2001 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter Watch out George Clooney! Your current live-in girlfriend Renee Zellweger
is about to film a movie with Russell Crowe - and we all know what that means. He'll
give her a little of the old Aussie "Ello, luv!" and they'll be rolling in the
hay in no time. You better visit the set of Lasse Hallstrom's upcoming flick
CINDERELLA MAN as often as possible to supervise. Renee will be playing the wife of
boxing underdog Jim Braddock and I'll be dollars to donuts, they'll have at least one love
scene. Hell, Crowe's playing a boxer, so he'll probably be topless most of the movie
and looking all buff. C'mon, George! You're no chump yourself. You used
to be the reigning bachelor of Hollywood before this Russell Crowe character came along.
Go, now George and keep your eye on that lovely, lovely wife of yours!!

| Portman wears "Black" |
October 26, 2001 |
| Source: Variety That's
right - Natalie Portman has other movies besides STAR WARS: ATTACK OF THE CLONES in the
works. Believe it or not, the young actress does other things besides play
Padme/Queen Amidala for George Lucas. In fact, she's just signed on to star in BRIDE
WORE BLACK, a dark romantic comedy that's described as a cross between BEETLEJUICE and MY
BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING. In the film, Portman will play a deceased bride who was left
at the altar before her untimely death. She's now back haunting the living and
planning to disrupt the wedding of a young couple to get revenge. Portman is also
busy with the film version of the highly successful play THE SEAGULL (she also starred in
the stage version) for director Mike Nichols. So it's not just CLONES here people!

| The Queen visits "Chicago" |
October 26, 2001 |
| Source: Variety You may
have heard already about the Miramax adaptation of the highly successful Broadway musical
CHICAGO. It stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, the above-mentioned Renee Zellweger and
Richard Gere. Well you can add another star to that list - Queen
Latifah. Yup,
the old-school rapper will join the A-list stars to play Mama Morton in the film.
Queen has been slowly making a rise in the film industry starring in the Fox sitcom LIVING
SINGLE and in Scorcese's BRINGING OUT THE DEAD and Disney's upcoming kids movie THE
COUNTRY BEARS. This could be her biggest role yet as CHICAGO has been hotly
anticipated and is expected to make a run at a few Oscars. I always heard the play
was so so good, but I just never got around to checking it out. I guess I'll just
wait for the film...

| Julia's got a "Mona Lisa Smile" |
October 25, 2001 |
| Source: Variety Julia
Roberts has signed on to star in the upcoming Revolution Studios film MONA LISA SMILE.
Not much is known about the film so far other than (according to Variety)
"Roberts will play a a free-spirited graduate of Berkeley who goes to Wellesley in
1953 to teach." Doesn't sound like the usual Roberts fare but I don't think
they could've found a better actress to personify that title smile. Jules will also
produce the film, from a script by Mark Rosenthal (MIGHTY JOE YOUNG), through her Shoelace
Productions company. Meanwhile, Julia's got the star-studded OCEAN'S ELEVEN coming
out in about two months.

| Even more script reviews |
October 25, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney I
promised more Honest Abe script review goodness and I deliver. We've got more today
with Abe's thoughts on Jon Favreau's (SWINGERS) next script, a film from a
ex-SIMPSONS
writer (he wrote LAST EXIT TO SPRINGFIELD and BART'S FRIEND FALLS IN LOVE among others)
and a new teen comedy.
THE FIRST 20 MILLION IS ALWAYS THE HARDEST
(positive, minor spoilers)
Andy Caspar has a problem. At the age of 23 he's already suffering a type of midlife
crisis. He works for Omega which is a big time dot com corp but he wants to do something
more. So he ditches everything which costs him his apartment and girl to go to work for La
Honda which is essentially a smaller computer design firm. Well, it ain't all it's cracked
up to be until he gets a chance to do something truly special. He takes the reins of the
PC99 project: Design a computer that will retail for only $99 bucks. While this may seem
impossible, Andy surrounds himself with three of the wackiest designers who don't believe
in the word impossible. I won't go into how they do it (cause it's kinda unique) but they
do pull it off only to have their smarmy supervisor steal the idea out from under them.
This doesn't sit well but they do manage to get revenge on the corporate schlub and in
turn, develop their own even better type of PC99. Jon Favreau has adapted this from the
novel of the same name and all I can say is that while this may come across as a lot of
techno babble bios, DSL, motherboard techie crap, it also is quite charming and all the
characters are likeable in their highly flawed ways (believe me, these guys are flawed).
There's heart in Andy's passion to leave a lasting mark on the world and with his team
(and of course, a cute neighbor he falls for) he manages to succeed in doing so. It's
funny and even more so now in the post dot com boom but it's not overloaded on techie
speak. Bottom line: I'm a fan of Favreau and while he's not in this movie, I've enjoyed
his previous two works (SWINGERS, MADE) so I will be there as so should you.
DOG CATCHER (positive, minor spoilers)
A typical teen comedy with heart and TOOTSIE mixed in. HUH? 3 brothers of the Kappa Omega
Kappa (K.O.K.) fraternity are thrown out for embezzlement. They're innocent but in order
to secure the proof they need, they dress in drag and move into the Delta Omicron Gamma
sorority house next door. (well, they need a place to live, too). The DOG's aren't really
dogs like the Omega Mu's from Revenge of the Nerds. They are nice girls who just aren't
playmate material like the Tri Beta sorority. Naturally, the head brother, Dave, falls in
love with Leah, the DOG president and there's a nice sub story of Leah falling in love
with Dave's alter ego, Daisy. It's not entirely played for laughs and I found it sweet. As
the three boys are forced to live and act as women for a few weeks until they can secure
the proof they need, they realize that their lives have been pretty shallow when it came
to treating women. They actually mature and become better men for having being women. One
of them laments, "I told (another frat brother) that he if wanted to get laid, he'd
only be able to get a DOG. Now look at me. I'M A DOG.") Again, it's played for laughs
but it's got heart to it too. There's great moments too such as the boys/girls trying to
teach their sorority sisters about football and little moments such as one guy holding up
a picture of a dress and asking "would I look good in this?" Granted, there are
your typical fraternity gross jokes, you know, burps and farts and sex. I don't really
want to give too much more away but bottom line: it's a comedy but it could be a cute
comedy. Check it out. I will.
MONEY FOR NOTHING...CHICKS FOR FREE
(positive, major
spoilers)
[Joey's note: This film has since been re-titled WHO'S YOUR
DADDY?]
I'm sure many young men out there have thought that their parents are freaks and wouldn't
it be cool if your parents were someone uber hip like...oh say....Hugh Hefner? Well, for
young Chris, that's almost accurate. He lives in Ohio (zzzzzzzzzzzzz) oh sorry. Anyways,
his parents are religious freaks (no offense readers) and he lives a pretty mundane
existence in high school. He lusts after the high school princess who's nothing but a
shallow bitch. Well good fortune smiles on Chris when it turns out that his real parents
passed away and have left him a small fortune to the tune of $87 million and the Heaven
magazine empire (think Playboy). It's implied that he always knew he was adopted but
naturally this news is a shock to a geeky virgin 17 year old and his best buddy Adam. The
gist is that since he was under 18, he gets the keys to the kingdom. If he was over 18
then his uncle would have inherited everything so you can imagine that Uncle Duncay will
set out to sabotage his new nephew. Naturally, Chris gets all caught up in the whirlwind
of his new found fame. Even the shallow bitch back home suddenly wants to snuggle up to
him. Such is the price of fame when his true friends are snubbed and subsequently turn
their backs on him. It's a pretty straight forward story. He does in fact lose the empire
but thanks to an "angel" (Heaven has angels just Playboy has Playmates) who is
looking out for Chris, he does in fact get the empire back from the greedy uncle. If I had
one major problem with the script is that it suddenly ends. There's a huge buildup and I
really liked Chris. Then he loses everything and goes about getting his friends back (and
of course, falling in love) but once he gets the Heaven empire back, that's it. In my
opinion, that's the third act and I so wanted to know what was next for this kid. Bottom
line, all the nudity (huh huh huh heh heh heh) aside, I'd go check this out. Unless the
trailer makes it look like a dungheap, I bet this would be quite funny and a good way to
spend my hard earned cash-ola! (huh huh huh I said hard)

| Douglas takes a "Ride Down" |
October 25, 2001 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter Michael Douglas will star in and produce a feature film adaptation of Arthur
Miller's THE RIDE DOWN MOUNT MORGAN, a once successful Broadway play. The film
follows a philandering insurance agent who crashes his car into a snow bank and lies in a
coma. When he finally wakes, he is greeted by his two wives and because of his
inability to remember the circumstances before the accident is forced to confront head-on
the double life he once led. Jesse Wigutow will make his full length debut writing
the adaptation of the Miller play. Sheesh, talk about a tough first-time assignment.
"Here - adapt this Arthur Miller work for Michael Douglas..."

| "Daredevil" casting news |
October 25, 2001 |
| Source: Dark Horizons No, no one else has been cast yet (other than Ben Affleck in the lead) but a
casting call has been put out to agencies that features a description of two of the
characters in the film. Let's take a look at what producers sent out:
"[Elektra Natchios] Age Range 21-31. Elektra is
the daughter of a Greek business tycoon. Exotic, intelligent, raised in private schools in
a life of privilege. Very beautiful, athletic and trained in martial arts.
[Young Matt] Age range 12-14. Brown hair and brown
eyes. Matt Murdock as a young boy - smart, articulate, sensitive yet strong. Idolizes his
father, who is a boxer. He is struck in the eyes and goes blind, only to find other senses
have been heightened. Trains his body to gymnast levels."
Interesting to see how they describe these characters.
I'll be very curious to see who the finally cast as Elektra and eventually Bullseye
and Kingpin. Meanwhile, speaking of Natchios, I could go for some nachos...

| Scorsese & DiCaprio for "Alexander the Great"! |
October 24, 2001 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter & Variety Martin
Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio will re-team to film the epic tale ALEXANDER, based on the
script by Academy Award winning writer Christopher McQuarrie, who at one time was attached
to direct with Jude Law starring. The project will follow the life of Alexander the
Great, the King of Macedonia, who sets out to conquer the world and eventually (duh)
fails. If you're curious why McQuarrie may have left his post at the director's
chair, word is he was paid a "mid-seven-figure sum" for the rights to the film.
Besides, McQuarrie recently said in a e-mail to Harry Knowles at Ain't It Cool News that he, first and foremost, was a
writer.
Scorsese and DiCaprio have their first collaboration, GANGS
OF NEW YORK, in the can, but that film is now seeing considerable delays. GANGS was
originally scheduled to release on December 21st in order to qualify for an Oscar run but
now Miramax has pulled the film from that date and taken the film out of Award
consideration. It is reported that the film will most likely premiere at the Cannes
Film Festival and eventually open next summer. This move confuses me beyond belief
considering the high-profile "event" movies scheduled to open in the summer of
2002 (SPIDER-MAN, MEN IN BLACK 2, STAR WARS: EPISODE 2 and MINORITY REPORT amongst
others). In any event, Scorsese felt the move needed to be made, for whatever
reason, and Miramax respected that. With THE SHIPPING NEWS, KATE AND LEOPOLD and AMELIE, they've got enough
films in consideration for Oscar.

| Jennifer Love Hewitt has big boobs |
October 24, 2001 |
| Source: Variety Yes, it's
true. The original J.Lo has big boobs. And that cleavage will again be on
display on the big-screen in her next film, the romantic comedy WHY CAN'T I BE AUDREY
HEPBURN. Coincidentally enough, Hewitt once played Hepburn in an ABC TV-movie.
This film revolves around a news anchorwoman (Jenny), with an unhealthy obsession
for the title star, who is left at the altar by her wealthy fiance. This project was
close to going into production almost two years ago with Steven Spielberg directing and
Tea Leoni starring. That fell apart and in the time since Renee
Zellweger, Ashley
Judd and Sarah Michelle Gellar have all been involved. Creator of TV's POPULAR, Ryan
Murphy will now direct. If you're thinking this film sounds a little boring, take a
look below and then maybe you'll reconsider...and leave me alone...I'm
tired...

| Two new script reviews |
October 24, 2001 |
| Source: Joey Baloney After
a long break from script reviewing, contributor Honest Abe is back with a whole lot to
say. He sent over six reviews my way and here's the first batch. We'll start
with a negative review of the Wesley Snipes flick UNDISPUTED and a mixed review of Renny
Harlin's next film called MINDHUNTERS. Take it away, Abe:
Undisputed (negative, minor spoilers)
Wesley Snipes and Ving Rhames star in The Mike Tyson Story...the Prison Years.
Essentially that's the story, cut and dried. Heavyweight champ Iceman Williams gets sent
to prison for rape where he meets the prison fight champ. The majority of the movie is
about setting these two up for a no holds barred undisputed championship fight. But it
drags on too long. The fight doesn't occur until the last 15 pages. Everything else is
just background. No is really likeable either. These are hard core convicts and Iceman
shows no remorse cause he claims innocence. He's nothing but a braggart though and not a
very likable anti hero. There's a subplot about an aging gangster named Manny who
apparently will be in prison till he dies but knows about hidden bank accounts all over
the world. There's also the little prison bitch who sucks up to him trying to get the info
out of him but it's to no avail. This script by Walter Hill is one of the few times where
I finished it thinking that I got TOO MUCH of the characters and inside their heads but
since you don't care about any of the characters, it becomes a senseless point to even
read. Bottom line: will I go see this in the theatre? I'll sneak
in cause I'd like to see the fight and there are flashbacks during the script of some of
Iceman's other fights. But the script is pretty predictable about who's gonna win. If
you're a fan of Wesley or Ving go ahead otherwise, save your cash.
Mindhunters (mixed, minor spoilers)
I was excited to read this because the concept sounded interesting: A group of FBI cadet
"mindhunters" or profilers are on their final assignment before becoming
official graduates. They are left on a desert island with a crime scene and have 3 days to
come up with a conclusive profile of the mystery killer...but someone takes the exercise
too far and starts to bump them off for real one at a time. Loyalties are tested and
strained. Sounds cool right? Well, it is, kinda. Last I heard, Renny Harlin was at the
helm of this pic which is interesting cause there's not too much slam bang action. But
ever since I saw Silence of the Lambs, I was curious to see more of the Behavioral
Sciences division of the FBI which is where the mindhunters are based. The problem could
be that the killer strikes before you get to know some of these profilers. There's also a
wild card in the bunch...a Scottish detective who tags along to observe. Like I said, it's
not bad and some of the killings are pretty unique but when the killer is revealed there's
a big "So?" that came out of my mouth. I'll admit I had no idea who it was but
there really wasn't a discernable motivation so what's the point. All good movie killers
have motivation. Hell, even Jason Voorhees had a motivation....revenge for his and his
mother's death. Bottom line: I'll go see a matinee but if you hear yawning when the
killer is revealed, tis only I, honest abe.
|
| "Bad Boys 2" fast-tracked |
October 24, 2001 |
| Source: Variety Uber-producer
Jerry Bruckheimer is still licking his wounds after the lackluster success of this
summer's PEARL HARBOR. But the
man doesn't rest long. He's already hard at work on BAD BOYS 2, where a lot of the
work revolves around convincing original stars Will Smith and Martin Lawrence to
return. Apparently, Bruckheimer is looking to get Michael Bay back in the director's
chair and currently has Cormac and Marianne Wibberley (THE SIXTH DAY) hard at work on a script.
I wonder how profitable a film like BAD BOYS 2 could be with the high salaries
Smith, Lawrence and Bay would command to return to the film. The original was so
successful partly because the two stars weren't quite household names at that point.
Separately they both command in the $17-20 million range per film and Bay's price
could push this film up to a budget of $50 mil before you even factor in the filming
process!

| The Kilmer "Instinct" |
October 24, 2001 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter New Line Cinema executives Ron Shaye and Toby Emmerich got sick of sitting at
their desks, throwing pencils into the ceiling tile, so they decided to make themselves a
movie. Toby went and got his brother Noah (remember Truman's "friend" from
THE TRUMAN SHOW?...) and they wrote a
script and even got Val Kilmer involved somehow. The film is called KILLER INSTINCT
and would have Kilmer playing a wealthy executive who thinks he got away scot-free with a
murder, but soon his lover/co-worker begins to suspect that something's up. To his
credit, Toby Emmerich isn't just a bored exec - he actually wrote the Dennis Quaid film
FREQUENCY that some said was actually pretty good. I wasn't one of them, but JoBlo seemed to think that it
was pretty good...

| "Matrix 3" gets a title |
October 23, 2001 |
| Source: 13th Street The title for the third installment of the MATRIX trilogy has a name:
THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS
Like it or not, it's a hell of a lot better than ATTACK OF THE CLONES.
The announcement was made by producer Joel Silver in an interview with
Smilin' Jack
Ruby of the Universal-owned website 13th Street. That might be enough for people to
call "RUMOR!" but the title but those people will wind up eating their words.
The news has been added to the press notes and bio of Joel Silver's next film THIRTEEN GHOSTS, which opens
Friday. REVOLUTIONS is the latest in RE titles for MATRIX related material.
The second installment will be titled THE MATRIX RELOADED and a behind-the-scenes
DVD on the films will be called THE MATRIX REVISITED.

| No "Toy Story 3"? |
October 23, 2001 |
| Source: IMDB It's looking less and less likely that
we'll see a third TOY STORY film, despite
the overwhelming success of the first two films. It seems disagreements between
Pixar and Apple head Steve Jobs and Disney chairman Michael Eisner might prevent the
potentially lucrative sequel from being greenlit. Apparently, there are three
films left in Pixar's deal with Disney - FINDING NEMO and two untitled films in 2003, 2004
and 2005 respectively - and that leaves no room for a TOY STORY sequel. So why can't
they just renegotiate? I suppose they could but each side has different
"business issues" and probably would have a very difficult time agreeing on a
deal that could still turn a profit for both parties involved. Besides, Pixar and
Jobs have already mentioned that after their deal with Disney is through, they may look to
form a development deal with another studio. Disney owns part rights to TOY STORY so
if that happened there definitely wouldn't be a sequel. In the meantime, let's just
be happy that MONSTERS, INC. comes out
on November 2nd and we've got a sweet 3-disc TOY STORY DVD to keep us happy.

| Bill Clinton: The Movie |
October 23, 2001 |
| Source: The Hollywood Reporter A movie will be made about the presidency of Bill Clinton but it's
probably not the type you'd want to see. There will be no sleazy retelling of the
Monica Lewinsky scandal but instead a theatrical documentary defending the President and
First Lady. Longtime Clinton supporters Harry and Linda Thomason will film THE
HUNTING OF THE PRESIDENT: THE TEN YEAR CAMPAIGN TO DESTROY BILL AND HILARY CLINTON based
on the book of the same name. The film's budget of $3 million is being financed
primarily by private investments and will be distributed in the US by Regent
Entertainment. The most surprising news is that Bill and Hilary will not be
participating or granting filmmakers interviews. The Thomasons are primarily a TV
producing family and have been behind such shows as DESIGNING WOMEN, EVENING SHADE and
more recently EMERIL. Considering I'm not very well-versed in the ways of politics,
I'm going to stay FAR away from this one. I leave it up to you to make your own
sarcastic comments.

| Attack
of the Clones teaser poster?? |
October 22, 2001 |
| Source:
Dark Horizons
UPDATE: Our Fox representative has
told us that the poster that you see below was created by "fans"
and not Lucas Films.
Remember
the SCOOBY-DOO "teaser poster" which we presented on our site a
while back? Well, even though Warner Bros denied that it was the
"official" poster, we were, and still are pretty sure that it was a semblance of
what they were working on for the final design, and now comes fellow movie
site webmaster Garth Franklin from Dark Horizons, with a similar
predicament for the ATTACK OF THE CLONES teaser poster. Is it real? Is it
fake? You decide. Here's what Garth had to say about it:
"If this isn't the real teaser poster
for the second prequel then its set the standard for fan made art. To its
credibility several SW hardcore fans I know have not seen these photo
shots anywhere (and they've seen pretty much all of them so far), and
overall the poster feels like the design of the official site as well as
pushing the 'romance' angle Lucas has been talking about. On the other
hand its been established Anakin's lightsaber is blue (though the red
saber could be more Vader foreboding like the shadow in the Episode 1
teaser), and the source is unfamiliar to me (though they've got good
credentials). With the real one set to debut in the next fortnight or so,
I'd hesitate to make a judgment call on this just yet."

| Hopkins, Kidman go for "Stain" |
October 22, 2001 |
| Source: Hollywood Reporter Anthony Hopkins and Nicole Kidman have signed to star in the drama THE HUMAN
STAIN, based on the Pulitzer Prize winning novel of the same name. Kidman dropped
out of the leading role in George Clooney's CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND (recently
replaced by Drew Barrymore) to reteam with Academy Award winning writer/director Robert
Benton (KRAMER VS. KRAMER, BILLY BATHGATE). STAIN revolves around a college
professor (Hopkins) falsely accused of racism who must reveal his own secrets to vindicate
himself. Kidman will play a graduate student with whom the professor falls in love.
Miramax is expected to distribute the film which will start filming in March of
2002.

| Ridley Scott to wear "Perfume"? |
October 22, 2001 |
| Source: Variety Constantin
Films (DONNIE BRASCO, DANCER IN THE DARK) has acquired the rights to the long sought after
novel PERFUME: THE STORY OF A MURDERER with Ridley Scott (GLADIATOR) in line to direct. Patrick
Suskind's novel had been courted by the likes of Martin Scorsese and Tim Burton but the
author was reportedly holding out for the late Stanley Kubrick to direct. Once he
passed, negotiations became fair game and Constantin paid $5 million against $10 million
for the rights. Caroline Thompson (EDWARD
SCISSORHANDS, NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS)
has been brought on to write the script. It is thought that Scott will direct should
all go well through the early stages but both reps for Constantin and Scott made clear
that the director is not officially committed. The book is described as "a
terrifying examination of what happens when one man's indulgence in his greatest passion -
his sense of smell - leads to murder." Sounds pretty damn strange if you ask
me. But who better than the writer of EDWARD SCISSORHANDS to make the story come to
life?
