November 9, 2001

Source: Hoyts and Dark Horizons

An Australian website called HOYTS, seems to be the first on the Net to have an official picture of the ATTACK OF THE CLONES international teaser poster, which is making its way around movie theaters as we speak. The slogan on the poster reads: "A JEDI SHALL NOT KNOW ANGER. NOR HATRED. NOR LOVE." Check it out below!

Exclusive - Singleton to direct "Sinbad"!!!

November 9, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney

On Thursday afternoon I had the pleasure of interviewing writer/director John Singleton as he promoted the DVD/VHS release of his film BABY BOY. While the full report on that interview is coming soon, there was one cool piece of information I had to pass along now. When I asked him about his love of comics and whether that would ever transfer over to films he said yes, and revealed his next project - a remake of the classic SINBAD films. "I'm gonna bring back the whole SINBAD series for Columbia...yeah, we're gonna do a whole new series of SINBAD films." So when can we expect these films?? "I'm thinking about doing them next, it depends. I might do another smaller movie with Tyrese (from BABY BOY) first..."

A new series of SINBAD films?! Not just one, but a whole series?!! Will it be a remake of THE 7TH VOYAGE OF SINBAD? Or THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD? Or a completely new set of films altogether?? I don't have all the answers yet as Singleton was mum on any of the finer points. E-mails to Columbia regarding the project were not returned, so we're unfortunately graced by the news but cursed by the lack of back-up information. I'm still working diligently on uncovering the details of the project and as soon as I have something concrete, I promise I'll bring it to you ASAP.

The SINBAD films have long been considered the most important films in the development of special effects as we know them today. Whether it's the "skeleton fight" or Cyclops from 7TH or the six-armed statue from GOLDEN, Ray Harryhausen and his "Dynamation" set the standard for action special effects in films. Harryhausen eventually won an overdue Gordon E. Sawyer Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement in a Technical Field in 1992. I can still remember watching these films (along with JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS) on local television on a Saturday afternoon, which was particularly impressive considering no normal 1950s film could hold my attention for longer than 10 seconds.

So with all that to live up to, can John Singleton create a quality modern SINBAD film that will effectively honor these classics? And will this conflict at all with DreamWorks planned SINBAD animated feature with Russell Crowe and Catherine Zeta-Jones starring?  It won't be an easy task but considering this is the youngest man ever nominated for a Best Director Academy Award, it sure is a step in the right direction. Stay tuned!!!...

Watts new Lord of the "Ring"

November 9, 2001

Source: Variety

Hot off her steamy role in David Lynch's MULHOLLAND DRIVE, actress Naomi Watts has signed a deal to star in DreamWorks's upcoming horror flick THE RING.  The film, directed by Gore Verbinski (THE MEXICAN) is a remake of the Japanese thriller that has attracted a cult following amongst horror devotees in the US.  Watts will play a female reporter investigating a mysterious videotape that reportedly kills whoever watches it.  The title "ring" refers to a phone call the viewer gets after watching the tape that informs them in seven days they will be dead.  The script was written by Ehren Krueger who achieved notoriety for his ARLINGTON ROAD and SCREAM 3 scripts.  Meanwhile, if you haven't yet, check out Naomi's sexy scenes in MULHOLLAND...you won't be disappointed!

Movie news update

November 9, 2001

Christian Slater has signed to star in the directing debut of screenwriter Jonathan Hensleigh (ARMAGEDDON) entitled BOUNTY KILLER. Hensleigh also wrote the script for the film which revolves around a tough killer who helps a young woman save her community. Sounds a like a B-movie version of THE THREE AMIGOS if you ask me...(Variety)

Vince Vaughn as HAMLET?  You'd think he'd have learned his lesson by watching Ethan Hawke's version of the classic tale or by watching his portrayal in another classic PSYCHO, but I guess not. It's being reported that Phillipe Mora has signed Vaughn to star as the Dane in HAMLET UNPLUGGED, a modern retelling of course.  Could just be a rumor and for Vince's sake, I certainly hope it is.  (Coming Soon)

Barry Josephson has come aboard to direct the children's film LIKE MIKE, the debut vehicle for rapper Li'l Bow Wow.  The film follows a 14 year old boy who finds a pair of old basketball sneakers, once worn by Michael Jordan, that now give him the skills needed to play in the NBA.  It is unknown whether Jordan will actually participate in making the film, but the NBA is onboard and several notable players have agreed to make cameos.  Fox is looking to begin filming on the project early in 2002.

"X-Files 2" moving ahead

November 8, 2001

Source: Variety

You know about two years ago this news would've really excited me.  I looked forward to a second X-FILES that would neatly wrap-up the series and the whole continuing saga in a definite fashion.  Then things on the TV show took a serious turn for the worse. I suppose I can't blame the creative team cause they've done the best they can with what they have.  But Duchovny's departure really sent the show reeling.  I hate to use such a "hip" phrase as jumping the shark, but that was definitely the moment X-FILES jumped.  They brought in Robert Patrick who didn't altogether suck, but it just wasn't the same.  Part of the reason the show was so successful and enjoyable was the chemistry between Mulder and Scully.  Now Scully takes the Mulder role of "the believer" and Doggett is "the skeptic."  And they're trying to fill the void with all these other characters like the one played by Annabeth Gish and it's just not working.  We can all see that at this point, you're just in it for the money.  I understand money's nice, but I think it's time to call it quits and work on something else.  Would that something else be a X-FILES 2 movie?  I suppose so....

Even if they were to do an X-FILES 2 that acted as a series finale (like I described above), I would still go see it, just to give myself some closure after spending 7 or 8 years of my Sunday (or Friday) nights watching the show.  But now it seems they're not even doing the sequel like that at all.  They're lucky enough to get Duchovny and Gillian Anderson to return but they're wasting the opportunity.   The film will (according to Variety) "not be steeped in the elaborate 'X' mythology but instead serve as a stand-alone feature."  What?!  How do you plan to explain Mulder's disapperance for the past, oh year or so?  ARGH!  So frustrating....In any event, series creator and slave to the dollar Chris Carter is expected to begin writing the script early in 2002.  Fox is reportedly aiming to begin filming late 2002 for a Holiday 2003 release date.

X-FILES sequel - Good idea or bad?  Discuss here...

Norrington still on "Ghost Rider"

October 19, 2001

Source: Comics2Film

Despite the fact Nicolas Cage left the production for another comic-book adaptation (CONSTANTINE), director Stephen Norrington (BLADE) is still determined to make GHOST RIDER. Norrington said that they lack of preparation and planning on the film led to significant delays and ultimately his choice to move on to TICK-TOCK (with Jennifer Lopez and Sam Jackson) and Cage's decision to leave altogether.  To further complicate manners, Norrington says the visual effects hadn't been "financed or undertaken" but the VFX work relied heavily on having a deal signed with a star.  The lack of a deal caused delays and the delays caused the lack of a deal.  But the director says he is committed to eventually making a quality GHOST RIDER film when he's got the time and financing to devote to the project.

Movie news update

November 8, 2001

Source: Variety; Hollywood Reporter; Ain't It Cool News

Actress Teri Polo, who you may have seen in DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE or MEET THE PARENTS, has signed on to BEYOND BORDERS alongside Angelina Jolie and Clive Owen.  The very down-to-earth looking Polo will play sister to the very insane looking Jolie.  BORDERS will be directed by Martin Campbell (VERTICAL LIMIT) and will begin filming in Montreal (hey JoBlo, keep your eyes out!) in January. (Variety)

Only a few days ago, it was announced director James Foley had left the Al Pacino/Colin Farrell thriller THE FARM.  Disney didn't wait long to find a replacement.  Roger Donaldson (THIRTEEN DAYS) was quickly brought aboard to take over the filming of FARM and the project will likely maintain its December 3 production start. (Variety)

Michele Rodriguez (THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS) is negotiating to star in the project tentatively titled SURF GIRLS.  She would star as the top female surfer in town who, along with her best friend and fellow waver, deal with the horribly cliched "life, love and the bonds of friendship" while training for a surf competition.  Kate Bosworth (REMEMBER THE TITANS) and Matthew Davis (LEGALLY BLONDE) co-star. (Hollywood Reporter)

Harry Knowles was invited by pal Robert Rodriguez to visit the set of SPY KIDS 2: THE ISLAND OF LOST DREAMS and he did just that.  He checked out the sets, the characters and even came back with a scoop on another addition to the cast. Read his full set report here.  And speaking of SPY KIDS 2, read a spoiler-filled script review of the film here.

DiCaprio to play half-man?

November 7, 2001

Source: Variety

Leonardo DiCaprio has long shown interest in the biopic JOHNNY ECK and the project has finally gotten the go-ahead from Fox who will finance and distribute the film. Caroline Thompson (EDWARD SCISSORHANDS) will write the screenplay that will tell the story of Johnny Eckhardt, a man who is missing the bottom half of his body, and his life on the freak show circuit. DiCaprio would play Johnny as well as his identical twin brother Robert who doubled as his manager. Eckhardt starred in the 1932 MGM thriller FREAKS where he gained notoriety and later became known as the world's only "half-man." DiCaprio currently has YOU CAN COUNT ON ME and Martin Scorsese's Alexander the Great project on his plate before he gets to filming ECK. Once Thompson finishes her script, the project will go out to directors.

Hayter talks "X-Men"....3?!

November 7, 2001

Source: Comics Continuum

Screenwriter David Hayter spoke recently about the status of X-MEN 2 and revealed that while he couldn't talk much about the details of the plot, the second film would be "the second part of a much bigger, three-part movie."  Looks like we've got an X-MEN trilogy on our hands folks!  The idea there would be a third X-MEN film was never 100% but it's nice to know that not only will it happen but it'll be a continuous storyline that will nicely wrap up the saga.  So what did Hayter say about the second film?  He said they're closer than you'd think to finalizing the script and he recently met with director Bryan Singer and Fox execs to discuss the finer points of the film.  Hayter also mentioned that he and co-screenwriter Zak Penn did not work together but worked from the same treatment that was approved by Fox and Singer. Filming on X-MEN 2 is expected to get underway in late January.

Official "Clones" trailer news

November 7, 2001

Source: Star Wars

We've heard all the rumors regarding the possible trailers we might see for STAR WARS: EPISODE 2 ATTACK OF THE CLONES but we finally have official word from LucasFilm on what we can expect.  Here's the rundown from the STAR WARS website:

November 9 - Internet Preview at dvd.starwars.com
"Completely different than the teaser currently running in theaters, the DVD-ROM exclusive Internet Preview features all-new footage from ATTACK OF THE CLONES. This anticipated preview requires a PC DVD-ROM drive, internet access and the EPISODE I DVD. If you don't have your copy yet, buy one today."

November 16 - Full Teaser Trailer
"The full teaser trailer for EPISODE II is coming - an all-new trailer will play in front of HARRY POTTER AND THE SORCEROR'S STONE starting November 16 in North America and other territories. Picking up where "Breathing" left off, this new trailer is over two minutes in length and features never-before-seen footage and dialogue. Lucasfilm and Apple will be presenting this new trailer on starwars.com exclusively in QuickTime 5 format."

November 25 - EPISODE I and Artoo-Detoo: Beneath the Dome
"While major motion pictures typically appear first on cable and pay-per-view, the North American premiere television broadcast of EPISODE I will air on FOX on Sunday, November 25 from 7-10 p.m. ET / PT. Immediately following the feature, FOX will air a six-minute sneak peek of the upcoming web-documentary series, ARTOO-DETOO: BENEATH THE DOME. Told in three parts, this documentary will be available only here at starwars.com, unearthing never before-seen footage and interviews to tell the story. It features exclusive interviews with Artoo's Star Wars co-stars, Hayden Christensen, Natalie Portman, Ewan McGregor, Carrie Fisher, Samuel L. Jackson, and with George Lucas, Steven Spielberg and Francis Ford Coppola, the directors who gave Artoo a chance."

So if you already haven't bought your ticket for HARRY POTTER, I suggest you do so quickly.  As if they weren't selling out quickly enough before, they'll be selling like Texas hotcakes now.  By the way, I don't even know what Texas hotcakes are.  I just made that up.

"Kung Pow" news

November 7, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney

Coming Attractions reported yesterday that they just received a report that DUBBED ACTION MOVIE: ENTER THE FIST might change its title to KUNG POW and that Fox "hasn't publicly announced it yet." Actually....we reported back in October that the film's title had been changed to KUNG POW!: ENTER THE FIST to back up that report, we've gotten our grubby hands on some Fox text from a preliminary copy of notes for the film:

Steve Oedekerk loves 1970s Hong Kong martial arts films. Their exaggerated visual style, bizarre music and thunderous sound effects. As a young boy he fantasized about being in one, and now he is…literally.

Acquiring the little known 1976 Hong Kong karate flick “Savage Killers,” Oedekerk has seamlessly blended portions of the film with new material he has directed to create a wild, off-the-wall, comedy feature film entitled KUNG POW: ENTER THE FIST

Oedekerk wrote, directed and stars in KUNG POW, placing himself digitally into the old film, redubbing the characters, as well as shooting new scenes. “We headed down to Mexico, rebuilt the old film’s sets, body doubled the actors and integrated new characters, storylines and effects. It’s pretty cool, I have a love scene with an actress who’s part was filmed 25 years ago! It’s kind of like making out with your mom…wait a second, that’s not good.”

“KUNG POW is easily the wildest comedy I’ve ever done” notes Oedekerk, who’s no stranger to off-the-wall humor, having written “The Nutty Professor” and “Patch Adams,” and written and directed “Nothing to Lose” and “Ace Ventura - When Nature Calls.”

I've also got it on pretty good authority that Oedekerk will film a trilogy of "dubbed action" movies and that KUNG POW is simply the first installment.  Hell, we've even got a title for the second film for you - TONGUE OF FURY.  KUNG POW is tentatively scheduled for a February release date.

The as of yet untitled Eminem film reportedly has a new title.  The project is currently being referred to as FIGHT MUSIC by the cast and crew.  In addition to Eminem, the film stars Brittany Murphy, Mehki Phifer, Kim Basinger and Giovanni Ribisi.  MUSIC is currently filming in Detroit. (Variety)

You just have to love the internet.  The first HARRY POTTER film hasn't even hit theaters and already photos from the set of the sequel are online.  The first shot is of Ron Weasley and Harry in the Forbidden Forest and the second is of the Ms. Weasley's Ford parked outside Hagrid's hut. Check both of these shots out at www.hpgalleries.com.  Speaking of HARRY POTTER, two clips from the film are available for download here and here courtesy of CountingDown.com and Warner Brothers.

You may have heard about the Heath Ledger project SIN EATERS that is about to begin filming in Prague.  Here's some finer details of the film's plot courtesy of the fine folks at Fox:

"In ancient Christianity, the "Sin Eaters" were an order of priests, working outside the Church, who would conduct a ceremony in which they "ate" the sins of another (by actually eating food off the corpse), taking the sins upon themselves, and in effect, absolving the deceased of them.

A young conflicted NY priest, Alex Bermier (Heath Ledger), helps a female detective, Lucy Sinclair, investigating the case of the French ambassador, whose corpse was covered with mysterious religious symbols written in Aramaic. When he sends his former teacher, Father Dominic, at the Vatican the signs to decode, Alex is summoned to Rome where the mystery continues. It seems this murder may be the work of the last of an ancient Christian order (outside the Catholic Church) called the "Sin Eaters", a person who claims to absolve the guilty of their sins, except there's one catch: the absolution is fatal."

SIN EATERS will be directed by Brian Helgeland of PAYBACK and A KNIGHT'S TALE fame.

Two new script reviews

November 6, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney

2002 is going to be a huge year for movies.  Part of that year are two highly anticipated blockbuster films - THE CORE and RED DRAGON.  Here's Honest Abe with his thoughts on the scripts for both projects:

THE CORE - A Review by 'Honest Abe' (Positive, Minor Spoilers)
ARMAGEDDON 2: Underground. Ok now that I've said that much, on with the review. When the inner core of Earth stops rotating, a team is assembled to burrow deep within and set off a nuclear explosion to get it to rotate again. What I liked about this script is how the techno babble was very easy to understand. I stink at science but this was very easy to follow while still remaining interesting in the execution. There's some cool scenes and effects early in the script as the earth goes through several interesting events due to the magnetic pulses shooting up from the core. I'll ruin one of them: people with pacemakers dropping dead within a one mile radius. That's actually the first scene in the script and of course no one knows what's going on yet. It takes a college professor named Josh to come up with an explanation to the problem as well as the solution. I'm assuming this is the role that Aaron Eckhart has signed on for and it should fit him just fine. Hilary Swank and DJ Qualls are also on board as a space shuttle pilot and computer hacker techno geek respectively. I can totally see Qualls in this role, that of a master hacker who the government actually has locked up but Swank I don't know. While I think she has the tough chick look, when I heard of her casting I had flashes of Winona Ryder in ALIEN RESURRECTION. I just don't know if Swank has what it takes for a major action role. Look, you don't go into a movie like this expecting stellar dialogue and academy award performances. You go for the popcorn fun this type of movie provides. Granted there are some things that make you just want to say "oh please, I''m sure, yeah right, etc..." You must check your brain at the door and just enjoy. Just like Armageddon, there's a long training montage and then of course the actual mission. I don't want to give away too much but I do have to make a brief comment about the ship they use to burrow into the earth. It has a biologically based outer shell. The hull is practically ALIVE! Done right it should be a neat effect. You cannot see the doors in the hull. They just appear when the "skin" of the ship separates. (ok, no more spoilers). Bottom line: probably lots of opening weekend business unless the trailer makes it look like a bad Troma picture. Go see it. A little testosterone never hurt anybody.

RED DRAGON - A Review by 'Honest Abe' (Positive, Minor Spoilers)
It's been years since I've seen MANHUNTER but that's neither here nor there. Most of you know the story. Essentially it's a prequel to SILENCE OF THE LAMBS for all you Lector fans out there and there's a nice tease to that movie at the very end. The characterizations of Lector and especially Graham are well developed and I think the casting of Ed Norton as Graham is brilliant. I know some were disappointed but I think this to be one of the strongest points of the script. Graham is such a torn and tortured individual because of his past history with Lector. As far as the killer, the Tooth Fairy, first of all, his nickname is never really explained and while we do get some back story on him, Red Dragon is more about Graham and Lector. If I have one problem with the Tooth Fairy is not so much the character himself but just the idea of yet another serial killer who was abused as a child and thus turned into who he is today. (I'd like someone to come up with an ingenuous explanation for why someone's a serial killer other than product of his environment). Just as the movie, Hannibal, this too will have a large following so for those of you out there, regardless of what I say, you'll be out there in full force. Bottom line: a good psychological thriller. Hell yeah I'm there and the added allure of Sir Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal once again......just whets my appetite.

Movie news wrap-up

November 6, 2001

Source: Variety; Dark Horizons

Jason Lee was lurking over at Kevin Smith's official website (www.viewaskew.com) and conversed with the fans for a while.  Amongst the tidbits of information learned was that Lee has signed on to star alongside Morgan Freeman and Tom Sizemore in THE DREAMCATCHER.  He will reteam with MUMFORD director Lawrence Kasdan for the project.  He also talked VANILLA SKY, saying his part in the film wasn't huge but "pivotal."  He mentioned there would be a few Radiohead songs throughout including title sequence features the song "Everything In It's Right Place."

We talked about the buzz surrounding who would be cast as Elektra in the DAREDEVIL movie but at the time, couldn't offer up more than Robbie Coltrane as a guess for the role of Kingpin. Now, Coltrane has a little competition in a more inspired choice - Michael Clarke Duncan.  The Academy Award nominee is reportedly being considered for the #1 bad guy and I, like most everyone else who's heard the news, think this is a damn fine choice.  But will it happen?...(Dark Horizons)

Tom Cruise will narrate the film SPACE STATION, an Imax documentary about the construction of the International Space Station. The picture reportedly features stunning 3-D visuals shot by astro/cosmonauts working in space since 1998.  Cruise said he's seen rough cuts of the film and was so impressed that he felt he had to be a part of the film in one way or another.  No word on when the film will be released.  (Variety)

The release of SHREK on home video last Friday saw the animated film breaking more records for opening sales, with a whopping 2.5 million DVDs sold in just three days.  The previous record was held by THE MUMMY RETURNS which sold 2 million in seven days.  In addition to the DVDs, 4.5 million VHS units were sold in the same amount of time.  Reports from stores have SHREK's numbers outperforming the likes STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE in terms of "fastest-selling." (Variety)

Cage signs for "Volunteer" duty

November 5, 2001

Source: Variety

Boy that Nicolas Cage is one busy guy.  He's attached to HARD BOILED, CONSTANTINE and now another project for New Line, THE VOLUNTEERS.  Cage's romantic-comedy days seem to be behind him as he's attached to this "sci-fi thriller" which would have him starring as a state trooper who turns to alien races in an attempt to get revenge on those who killed his daughter.  Of the screenwriter Sam Egan, Cage said his work on THE OUTER LIMITS "was thought-provoking and inspired."  He went on to speak of this project saying "in the midst of all the current chaos we are experiencing in our country, the story of THE VOLUNTEER will emerge in a very timely and provocative way."  Cage is producing the film through his Saturn Films company. No director is attached at this time.

Law to play Jekyll/Hyde

November 5, 2001

Source: Coming Soon

If you'll remember a while back, we reported that David Mamet (HEIST, GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS) said he would be working with Jude Law and Rebecca Pidgeon (HEIST) on an upcoming project. That project will be DIARY OF A YOUNG LONDON PHYSICIAN, a Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde tale of a Victorian scientist struggling to keep his dark side at bay.  Mamet originally wrote the script for Harold Becker (DOMESTIC DISTURBANCE) to direct, but when he dropped, Mamet snatched up the opportunity to direct the film himself.  HEIST opens on November 9th and Law has THE ROAD TO PERDITION with Tom Hanks coming sometime in early 2002.

Movie news roundup

November 5, 2001

Source: Variety, Hollywood Reporter; USA Today

Tom Sizemore and Thomas Jane (BOOGIE NIGHTS) will star alongside Morgan Freeman in Lawrence Kasdan's (MUMFORD) adaptation of Stephen King's DREAMCATCHER.  Sizemore will play an underling of Freeman's military general and Jane will play one of four men who reunite to battle a strange power in New England. (Hollywood Reporter)

20th Century Fox has announced they've moved up the release of the Gene Hackman/Owen Wilson film BEHIND ENEMY LINES from January 18th to November 30th.  Could it have anything to do with the similarly themed BLACK HAWK DOWN opening on 1/18?  Nah, Fox claims test screening results were in record numbers and they're simply trying to capitalize on that buzz. (Fox)

In other schedule news, Matt Damon's first foray into blockbuster action THE BOURNE IDENTITY, will get a chance to open the 2002 summer blockbuster season strong on May 31st.  Only problem?  That's just a mere week and a half after ATTACK OF THE CLONES is released.  BOURNE could be in good company though.  The Al Pacino/Robin Williams thriller INSOMNIA will release on May 24th, just two days after AOTC hits.  Busy, busy, busy...   (Variety)

While discussing Pixar's latest film MONSTERS INC., USA Today revealed the title of one of its upcoming projects.  John Lasseter, the creative genius behind the TOY STORYs and A BUG'S LIFE, will direct ROUTE 66, a "car-driven vehicle" tentatively set for a 2005 release.  Pixar's next films are FINDING NEMO in 2003 and THE INVINCIBLES in 2004.  (USA Today)

Al Pacino and Colin Farrell (MINORITY REPORT, TIGERLAND) were about to begin filming on their thriller THE FARM when suddenly director James Foley dropped out.  No word on why the GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS helmer decided to bail but producers are hustling to find a replacement while Pacino and Farrell are still attached. FARM revolves around a rookie CIA agent who fears his mentor is working with the enemy.

"American Girl" script review

November 5, 2001

Source: Joey Baloney

Honest Abe is back on the scene with another script review.  This time he talks about AMERICAN GIRL (formerly AMERICAN GIRL) which stars Jena Malone (STEPMOM), Brad Renfro and Alicia Witt.  Let's listen:

AMERICAN GIRL (mixed, minor spoilers)
If anyone saw Poor White Trash, which I recommend for a good laugh, well, take that movie and add in more drama and less comedy and you'll have AMERICAN GIRL. The script centers around a prison where one day a year families are invited to come and bring picnic stuff and spend the day with the members of their families who reside in prison. The focus is on one family, the Grubbs. Rena (Jena Malone) is the focal point as she is 15 and newly pregnant. Her mom Madge is the lone voice of reason in this nutball family who dreams of taking her kids to live in the Magic Kingdom. Jay is the effeminate confused older brother and Barbie the oldest half sister who's pretty much a trash barrel whore. The father, John, is in prison for double murder (self defending himself in a bar fight). He's a stereotypical back water wife beater I rule the household and kids is nothin but kids kinda guy. In other words, a moronic a-hole. Rena pesters Madge for the first portion of the script to go to the picnic and she has fanciful flashbacks to life before dad got sent away. Finally caving in, Madge packs the whole family off to picnic. What occurs is the epitome of dysfunctional family picnics. One major spoiler is.......Rena is pregnant and the family doesn't want dad to know. What ultimately happens is each family member finds a tiny piece of freedom of sorts. While it did tend to ramble on at times, overall I thought this wasn't bad. Bottom line: I need to see the trailer first and my understanding is that this is an independent film so it may quickly wind up on video after a brief theatrical run. But what the hell, give it a view
