Silence of the Lambs 3?

November 9, 2000

Source: E! Online

SILENCE OF THE LAMBS was a major hit with critics and fans alike. HANNIBAL, the sequel, has yet to be released, but is currently in post-production, with director Ridley Scott and actors Anthony Hopkins and Gary Oldman on board. Now comes word that producers Martha and Dino DeLaurentiis, the forces behind the first two films, are planning a third chapter in the story of everyone's favorite cannibal. The film would be based on the 1981 Thomas Harris bestseller "Red Dragon", the book that introduced the world to Hannibal Lecter. Laurentiis said that, "RED DRAGON is about the crime Hannibal Lecter committed and the way he was arrested." Ted Dally, the man who won an Oscar for scribing THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, is slated to write this prequel as well. Apparently, Anthony Hopkins has expressed interest in reprising the role for a third time. For now, you can look forward to HANNIBAL hitting the theatres in February 2001, and the screenplay for the next film being completed by Mid-March.

Harrison Ford getting a divorce?

November 9, 2000

Source: Reuters

Not necessarily movie "news" but something of interest to his fans. Harrison Ford and his wife of 17 years, screenwriter Melissa Mathison have separated. According to their reps, this has nothing to do with any "false and inaccurate" tabloid reports romantically linking Han Solo to actress Lara Flynn Boyle (wasn't she dating Jack Nicholson...I'm getting confused now), and in a joint statement, the couple said: "We have been living apart for the past month. We sincerely hope we can work out our differences. We would appreciate it if the media and the public would respect this as a very painful time for both of us and consider this a private matter henceforth.''

Conan the Barbarian returns..

November 9, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Director John Milius is on the hunt for a new "Conan" to star in an updated version of the Arnold Schwarzenegger classic. Word on the street is that Arnold would return as the new star's father in the new film, and that the brothers behind THE MATRIX, Andy and Larry Wachowski, would serve as "creative partners" on the project. The film is looking at a $90 million budget and searching for a man "aged about 25, with muscles, attitude and a haircut". If you fit that bill, I suggest you apply early...

November 9, 2000

Source: Aint It Cool News

Director John Madden, the man behind the Oscar-winning SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, was set to release his latest opus starring Nicolas Cage, Christian Bale and Penelope Cruz in the next coming months, but now comes a raving review of the film, which might instigate some of the studio heads to attempt an earlier release of the film in time for the Oscar watch. Stay tuned for CAPTAIN CORELLI'S MANDOLIN. The film is about a fisherman leaving to fight with the Greek army during WWII, at which time his fiance falls in love with a local Italian commander. The review is an extremely positive one of the film and contains **SPOILERS** and plenty of plot info.

Cronenberg & Basic Instinct 2

November 7, 2000

Source: Aint It Cool News

The director of the original BASIC INSTINCT movie, Paul Verhoeven, did not want to return for the sequel because of a certain actress named Sharon Stone with whom he said it was a "nightmare" to work. Rumors later arose about director Lee Tamahori (ONCE WERE WARRIORS) taking the helm, but nothing came of that either. Now word comes from AICN headquarters that Canadian director David Cronenberg, the man behind such freaky films as THE FLY and EXISTENZ, is on top of the short list to direct the follow-up thriller. Has this been confirmed yet? No. Is it a definite rumor? Yup!

Fincher's next reviewed

November 7, 2000

Source: Screenwritersutopia.com

Director David Fincher's next project is entitled THE PANIC ROOM, a film written by David Koepp and starring Nicole Kidman, Jared Leto, Forest Whitaker and Dwight Yoakam. Koepp's screenplay apparently begins with the words "This film is short. This film is fast." The guy who reviewed the script dated February 23, 2000, kinda liked the screenplay but said, "The story is exciting for about the first 45 pages, but as it enters the Second Act it really lost momentum for me. Too few characters, too little happening, and all in the same environment." He also finished his review with an interesting comparison, "Bottom line, this story reminded me of an adult version of HOME ALONE, and a very unimaginative one at that." You can read the entire review of the script, which contains minor spoilers here
