Scoobie Doobie Doh!

December 1, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

The following news story is evidence that there are forces in Hollywood trying to take my wonderful childhood memories and do a number two all over them. It seems there is a cast set for Warner Bros' upcoming live action
Scooby-Doo movie. Are you ready for this? We have Freddie Prinze, Jr. as Fred, Sarah Michelle Gellar as Daphne, Matthew Lillard as Shaggy and Linda Cardellini (FREAKS AND GEEKS) as Velma. The film is to be directed by Raja "BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE" Gosnell and shooting is scheduled to begin in February. Shoot me now.

Tim Burton's Simian Secrets

December 1, 2000

Source: Movie Headlines

Could the teaser for the PLANET OF THE APES remake be in theaters as early as today? Probably not, with no major releases coming this weekend. But insiders expect it to hit soon, so keep your eyes open. Meanwhile, the teaser will most likely show you none of the plot (unlike the new CASTAWAY trailer/mini-movie) as details are being kept so top secret, that most of the actors have no idea what happens throughout the movie. The ending is said to feature an image so shocking, it will rival the "Statue of Liberty" scene in the original. Keep your eyes and ears out for this one.

Source: Variety and Ain't It Cool News

Variety is reporting that Kris Kristofferson (who was also just added to the cast of PLANET OF THE APES) will be returning as Whistler for the upcoming sequel to BLADE. In an unconfirmed report, AICN is reporting that Tcheky
(WING COMMANDER) Karyo will also join the cast playing a (big surprise) vampire. Guillermo del Toro (MIMIC) is on board to direct and the film is shooting for a November, 2001 release.

December 1, 2000

Source: Coming Attractions

While making an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show the other day, Jada Pinkett-Smith revealed that she was in fact going to be a part of the MATRIX 2. She will be taking on the role of tough-as-nails Niobi who just happens
to be the love interest of Laurence Fishburne's Morpheus. Jada only briefly commented on the MATRIX sequels further saying only that production is to kick off in two months.

Hulk plot details

December 1, 2000

Source: Movie Headlines and Entertainment Weekly

The latest issue of Entertainment Weekly has a quick synopsis of Universal's INCREDIBLE HULK script as written by X-MEN's David Hayter. According to the story, the plot will follow Dr. Bruce Banner as he is bombarded by gamma rays and turned into the hero known as the Hulk. Banner soon becomes hunted by military and government officials and is forced to flee. Along the way he finds romance and opposition in the form of Crusher Creed, a.k.a. The Absorbing Man. Hmm, interesting choice in a villain.

Downey Jr. and Wonder Woman?

November 30, 2000

Source: New York Post

Boy, would I love to be a fly on the wall of this hotel room.  The New York Post is reporting that in the Palm Springs hotel in which actor Robert Downey Jr. was arrested on Saturday night for possession of cocaine and
methamphetamine, a Wonder Woman costume was found.  Review of hotel surveillance videotape showed Downey and an unidentified female dressed as Wonder Woman walking towards his room sometime earlier that evening.  It was also noted that Downey may have been up for the male lead in the upcoming BASIC INSTINCT 2, but that may be in jeopardy due to his current legal woes.

McDormand joins DeNiro

November 30, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Frances McDormand (Oscar winner for FARGO and if there is any justice on this God forsaken planet, Oscar nominee/winner for ALMOST FAMOUS) has joined the cast of Robert DeNiro's latest movie, CITY BY THE SEA.  The movie revolves around a cop (DeNiro) who discovers his son, played by James Franco (who was just added to the cast of SPIDERMAN) is the prime suspect in a murder case. CITY BY THE SEA is currently filming in Asbury Park, NJ, which is nowhere near any sea I've ever heard of, and can barely be called a city.

mulling over whether or not to take on the next installment in the SPAWN saga.

Affleck/Caan join Ocean's

November 29, 2000

Source: Coming Attractions

Casey "No, I can't get you my brother's autograph" Affleck and Scott "No, I can't get you my Dad's autograph" Caan are the latest additions to the upcoming star-studded remake of OCEAN'S 11.  The two will star as Virgil and
Turk Malloy, a pair of Mormon twins who act as the fast-talking getaway drivers for the movie's central heist.  Previously Owen and Luke Wilson, the Joel and Ethan Coen, and the Polish brothers (TWIN FALLS, IDAHO) were
considered for the parts.  Note that previously, real life brothers were initial candidates, until the job eventually fell into the hands of two non-related actors, who in my opinion look nothing alike.

Connolly has a beautiful...mind?

November 28, 2000

Source: Coming Attractions and Upcoming Movies

Coming Attractions is reporting that Jennifer Connolly (who'd love to be known for REQUIEM FOR A DREAM but will always be remembered for CAREER OPPORTUNITIES) has been offered the female lead in Ron Howard's upcoming A BEAUTIFUL MIND. Connolly would star opposite Russell Crowe as the wife to his paranoid schizophrenic genius, John Forbes Nash Jr. Ed Harris will re-team with Ron Howard for this project playing an intelligence officer. Production is scheduled to kick off in early 2001, with filming taking place in Princeton, New Jersey and New York City.

The X-Men bring it home!

November 28, 2000

Source: Variety

The Grinch and Bruce Willis weren't the only ones raking in the dough this past holiday weekend. At video stores everywhere, VHS and DVD copies of our favorite mutant superhero movie, besides THE TOXIC AVENGER were flying off the shelves. X-MEN brought in approximately $50 million in sales and rentals during its first weekend in stores. 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment is estimating that the VHS version sold 1.12 million copies and the DVD sold close to 1 million copies by the end of business Sunday. Fox is already shipping more copies of both versions to replenish stock for the upcoming holiday season.

Elizabeth Hurley does the "nude thang"

November 28, 2000

Source: IMDb

Elizabeth Hurley is taking her sultry sexpot image one step further in her new movie THE WEIGHT OF WATER. The movie, directed by Kathryn Bigelow (STRANGE DAYS) and also starring Sean Penn, will reportedly feature Ms. Hurley in the buff during a steamy love scene, rubbing an ice cube all over her hot, sweet, naked body… umm, excuse me, I have to go now.

Whatever Happened to Mary Jane?

November 28, 2000

Source: New York Post

With recent news that the roles of the Green Goblin and Harry Osborn have been cast and that J. Jonah Jameson won't be far behind, millions of fans are left scratching their collective heads wondering who will be cast as Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming SPIDER-MAN movie. The New York Post reports today that while the role has not been cast, it is one that many young Hollywood starlets are dying to get their skinny hands on. The name most often mentioned for the role is Alicia Witt, who happens to be director Sam Raimi's favorite, but it turns out supermodel and current Kid Rock girlfriend James King, Mena Suvari (riding high off the phenomenal success of LOSER…), and many other hopefuls have read for the part in recent weeks.

Hulk-a-Mania

November 27, 2000

Source: Comics2film

After word came through earlier this week from AICN that the Incredible Hulk movie had been greenlit (no pun intended), it seems now that Harry and his folks may have jumped the gun. Kevin Feige of Marvel Studios told Comics2Film that while they are very enthusiastic about David Hayter's script, movies can and frequently are in pre-production for months at a time before they are actually greenlit. He cites X-Men as an example saying "X-Men wasn't greenlit until we were in Toronto." Only time will tell what the future will hold for Mr. Bruce Banner and his green skinned alter-ego. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

Downey Jr. = One Big Loser

November 27, 2000

Source: AP

I'm very sad to report that Robert Downey Jr. officially changed his profession over the weekend from "actor" to "joke". The troubled thespian was once again (yawn, haven't we all heard this one before?) caught alone with a stash of cocaine and methamphetamine in a hotel room. The officers at the scene reported that "He was conscious and conversed with the officers. He was very cooperative." The actor was released Sunday on $15,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court within 30 days. But that's okay, right Hollywood? Let's keep supporting the guy! He's a great actor after all! Woo-hoo....excellent role model, too! Sheesh.

You'd think there were NO OTHER DECENT actors in Los Angeles by the way that producers keep hiring this dude. C'mon people, you think maybe, just maybe, you're making things a little "easier" on the guy?

Oh, What a Tangled Web We Weave...

November 27, 2000

Source: E! Online

Maybe there was more to the delayed release date after all. Sources close to the production of the SPIDER-MAN movie say that there is trouble brewing in paradise. Sony execs are allegedly (and I emphasize allegedly) so unhappy with the current script that they are debating whether or not to return to the (shudder) James Cameron treatment. The sources go on to say that Sam "The Man" Raimi "has no clue" what to do with the movie. The word is that execs are waiting for Scott Rosenberg's script to be finished before making any final decision. Me thinks Sony should've shelled out some serious bucks to Kevin Smith and had him pen this puppy. All we can do now is pray. Please don't mess this up, please don't mess this up...

Clooney, Myers to Star in Dangerous Mind?

November 27, 2000

Source: Reel.com

No, not the sequel to the Michelle Pfeiffer/Coolio spectacular, but "Confessions of a Dangerous Mind," the latest Charlie Kaufman script to be developed into a film. Following in the vein of Being John Malkovich and the upcoming Human Nature and Adaptation, this Kaufman script follows once Gong Show host Chuck Barris and his belief that he was a contract killer for the CIA. Mike Myers has signed on for the role of Barris while George "Mrs. Wahlberg" Clooney is being courted for the role of CIA agent Jim Byrd, who lures Myers' character into a life of intrigue. Fresh off of X-Men, Bryan Singer is on tap to direct, while the movie should begin principal photography in March of next year.

How the Grinch Stole Thanksgiving Weekend

November 27, 2000

Source: JoBlo's Box-Office Report

Not that the Grinch had to really steal it from anyone. It was pretty much his for the losing. I personally would've enjoyed seeing Unbreakable snatch the top spot, but it had a pretty respectable debut nonetheless. Taking three of the top five, kids fare pretty much ruled this holiday weekend. Arnold Schwarzenegger proved he's one more stinker away from Kindergarten Cop 2 as The 6th Day dropped to seventh place overall (remember the director of The 6th Day also directed Stop Or My Mom Will Shoot).

Mum-my's the Word

November 27, 2000

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Theaters were sent a copy of the new teaser trailer for THE MUMMY RETURNS last week with instruction to play it with The Grinch this holiday weekend. After complaints from some of the larger theater chains about the intensity of said trailer, Universal decided to scrap plans to run it before The Grinch, which is geared towards children and young adults. Recent criticisms of film marketing campaigns are believed to have played a large part in the decision but Universal is simply stating they "would have reached this decision in any type of environment." The teaser will eventually be shown in the theaters with a more adult feature, but if you can't wait, head over to the link below and download the damn thing.
