X-MEN 2 (X2) Official Press Release!!!

December 13, 2001

Source: Fox

Before I begin my commentary, I'll let you just read this official press release that came in from Fox regarding  X-MEN 2 ---

FOX ANNOUNCES RELEASE DATE OF ‘X²’:
SEQUEL TO X-MEN ARRIVES IN THEATRES MAY 2, 2003

LOS ANGELES …. Twentieth Century Fox today announced that that it will release X², the second film in its X-MEN motion picture franchise, on May 2, 2003.

X² reunites all of the principal cast members of the 2000 blockbuster, which theatrically has grossed nearly $300 million worldwide, was a video and DVD phenomenon, and revitalized the legendary comics series. Also returning are the original’s key creative team, including director Bryan Singer, producers Ralph Winter, Lauren Shuler Donner and Avi Arad, and screenwriter David Hayter.

X² is scheduled to begin principal photography in May, 2002.

In addition to its star-studded returning cast, X² will feature several surprises, including favorite mutant characters from the vast X-Men comics universe, who are new to the film franchise. Since the release of X-MEN, the worldwide fan base has been burning up the Internet with speculation on which new characters would appear in the sequel.

Director Bryan Singer’s credits include the acclaimed drama “The Usual Suspects” and “Apt Pupil,” as well as “X-Men.” Producer Lauren Shuler Donner’s credits include “Free Willy,” “Any Given Sunday” and “Volcano.” Ralph Winter, who recently signed a producing deal with Fox, most recently executive produced the studio’s summer blockbuster “Planet of the Apes.”

Twentieth Century Fox is a unit of Fox Filmed Entertainment, a unit of Fox Entertainment Group.

Wolvie vs. Hulk

December 13, 2001

Source: JoBlo.com

It's an epic battle that traces back to their earliest incarnations.  They've done battle countless times over the years and now two behemoths (each in their own inimitable way) are set for their biggest, bloodiest and costliest fight of all time.  Wolverine and The Incredible Hulk will face-off on May 3, 2003 as their respective movies (X2 and THE INCREDIBLE HULK) are scheduled to open on the very same day.  All in all, a ballsy move by the folks at Fox who push their chips to the center of the table and wait for Universal to fold.  Each film looks to start of the Summer blockbuster season in style, but only one can win.  Which will it be?......

X2 or HULK - which will you see first?? - Discuss here

Soderbergh stuck in TRAFFIC territory

December 13, 2001

Source: Variety

Steven Soderbergh will return to familiar territory with familiar folks as he prepares SEE NO EVIL, a TRAFFIC-esque film about the CIA and terrorism.  The film will be written and directed by Stephen Gaghan (who won an Academy Award for writing TRAFFIC) and is based on the book "See No Evil: The True Story of a Foot Soldier in the CIA's Counter Terrorism War" by Robert Baer.  Soderbergh and partner (in business not gay love) George Clooney will produce the film through their Section Eight production company.   The book reportedly revolves around conflicts within the CIA following the Cold War which allowed terrorist cells to thrive throughout the World.  Gaghan certainly has the talent to write a film like this but we haven't seen his work as a director yet.   His directorial debut, ABANDON with Katie Holmes and Benjamin Bratt, is due early next year.

Hanks starring as Russkie rock star

December 13, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Unfortunately, he won't be starring as "Olaf" from CLERKS.  I'd pay money to see Tom Hanks sing "Berserker" but I suppose this is the closest I'm gonna get.  Hanks will star in the DreamWorks film COMRADE ROCKSTAR, based on the true story of Dean Reed - a superstar rock singer in Russia but a virtual unknown here in the States.  Reed, who is in actuality was born in Denver, Colorado, was known as the "Red Elvis" and his politics eventually got him into trouble with the United States government.  Now, is it just me or does this sound like it could potentially be the most boring movie ever?  I'm not sick of Tom Hanks yet, but if he keeps making these choices in films (this coupled with TERMINAL is enough to make me nuts) I don't what to think of the guy.  CATCH ME IF YOU CAN was a step in the right direction but who really cares about Red Elvis?  Is his story that interesting?  For all I know, maybe it is.  Hanks can have his pick of any project in the world so I don't think he'd toss his name randomly onto some piece of crap.  I just wish he'd pick a project with Spike Jonze or David Fincher or Steven Soderbergh...

NY Film Critics select 2001's best

December 13, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Just when you thought you had the picks for next year's Academy Award nominations all set, the New York Film Critics Circle goes and throws a monkey wrench in the whole damn thing. They chose Oscar dark horse and David Lynch tripfest MULHOLLAND FALLS as the Best Picture of 2001. In most of the articles and predictions I've poured through so far, I've heard barely a whisper about the chances of MULHOLLAND at next years Academy Awards.  Reason most often given? - Too weird.  But the NYFC say it's tops in their book. Other winners this year include:

Best Director: Robert Altman (GOSFORD PARK)
Best Actor: Todd Wilkinson (IN THE BEDROOM)
Best Actress: Sissy Spacek (IN THE BEDROOM)
Best Supporting Actor: Steve Buscemi (GHOST WORLD) [hell, yeah!! you go Steve!!!]
Best Supporting Actress: Helen Mirren (GOSFORD PARK)
Best Foreign Film: IN THE MOOD
Best Screenplay: Julian Fellows (GOSFORD PARK)

All in all some very surprising choices. It leaves off almost all of the contenders from major studios and focuses primarily on the "indie" scene. The NYFCC is comprised of such notable New York critics as David Ansen of Newsweek, Owen Gleiberman and Lisa Scwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly and Peter Travers of Rolling Stone.  Their pic for Best Picture has gone on to win the Oscar 43% of the time...

CURIOUS GEORGE film gets director

December 13, 2001

Source: Variety

An animated (or live-action for that matter) CURIOUS GEORGE film has been in the works for a long, long time now.  It was recently decided that in this ever-evolving world of animation, the film would go from traditional animation to CGI-animation, a la SHREK and TOY STORY.  Universal and Imagine Entertainment took another step forward in that direction on Wednesday as they brought aboard MONSTERS, INC. co-director David Silverman to take the reigns on GEORGE.  The film will mark Universal's first CGI-animated film, who like Sony, are eager to cash-in on this latest fad in Hollywood.  They also have two other CGI films in the works - WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE and THE ANT BULLY, both being produced by Tom Hanks.

Bay takes PAIN AND GAIN

December 13, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Love him or hate him, Michael Bay has made a name for himself in Hollywood. With such big-budget, popcorn flicks as THE ROCK, ARMAGEDDON and PEARL HARBOR under his belt, Bay cemented a reputation as a director who can make a blockbuster but not necessarily a quality film.  Bay seems to be well-aware of this reputation and has been looking for a project that will allow him to stretch his directing abilities and try something new.  He thinks he has found that project in PAIN AND GAIN - a film Bay thinks is his FARGO.  PAIN is based on the true story of Florida bodybuilders, who get involved in steroids, kidnapping, extortion and eventually murder.  Bay says, "I had been looking for a movie with the tone of FARGO for a long time, and even though this is violent, this story has that potential."  The director will likely take another project before filming this one - tops on the list are I AM LEGEND with Arnold Schwarzenegger or BAD BOYS 2 with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence.

Universal Pictures will remake the classic horror film CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON with producer Gary Ross, who directed PLEASANTVILLE.  Ross' father Arthur wrote the original film in 1954 and the sequel in 1956 and will serve as a co-producer on the remake.  At this time, no directors or writers are attached.  (Hollywood Reporter)

The delayed GANGS OF NEW YORK may finally have found itself a home. Martin Scorsese's epic crime drama will reportedly be released this Summer where Miramax heads feel it will perform best.  The project was originally scheduled to debut at the end of this month but was pushed back indefinitely for a variety of rumored reasons (Miramax goes on the record as saying they wanted to allow Scorsese as much time as he needed to make a quality film). (Hollywood Reporter)

Wanna get a good laugh?  Call this toll-free number (888-369-0689) that somehow, someway has something to do with Fox's KUNG POW!: ENTER THE FIST.

The official website for BLADE 2 has gone live at www.blade2.com.  There's a cool front page but not much else beyond that. A teaser page now and message boards but expect more in the future...

Reminder!!  Tonight you can watch the brand new SPIDER-MAN trailer during Fox's "Temptation Island."  I know it's a tough price to pay to sit through that crap, but trust me - it'll be worth it!  The trailer will also be in theaters starting next weekend attached to no specific film.

"Terminator 3" finds a home...

December 12, 2001

Source: Variety

The race for who gets to distribute the blockbuster-in-the-making TERMINATOR 3 is over.   Paramount, Universal, DreamWorks and Disney (through Dimension Films) are all left in the dust by late contender Warner Bros. who wasn't even mentioned in previous articles, but used its HARRY POTTER leverage to win the rights in the end.  WB reportedly stuck to two major points: 1) their ability to use the full range of AOL Time Warner resources and 2) their experience with theaters that would guarantee the most of amount of screens possible.  With this acquisition, it's hard to imagine Warners not finishing first among the studios from now until 2005.  Next year they have the HARRY POTTER sequel and in 2003 they've got THE MATRIX RELOADED on Memorial Day, followed up by TERMINATOR 3 on July 4th, wrapped up by THE MATRIX REVELATIONS on Thanksgiving.  2004 continues their success with the third HARRY POTTER film.  Also of note is that the studio retains the right to any fourth TERMINATOR film should there be one (don't expect there to be) and Edward Furlong is expected not to return.  So does this mean those Ed Norton rumors from last week could be true?!?!

Early VANILLA SKY review

December 12, 2001

Source: JoBlo.com

So far, early word on the Tom Cruise/Cameron Crowe flick VANILLA SKY ain't too hot.  Variety gave it a mixed review this past weekend and The Hollywood Reporter slammed it hard, calling the film a "failure" and a "crushing disappointment."  I maintained hope (I really want this film to be good) but then I got this review today from someone who saw the film earlier this week.  Doesn't look good folks.  Could it be a misunderstood masterpiece?  Stay tuned for JoBlo's opinion this weeken...(beware minor spoilers below)

VANILLA SKY
I want to start by saying that I thought this movie was going to be on my Oscar ballot so I had very high expectations for the film. After seeing it I think it was one of my least favorite movies of the year. The trailer gives away very little about what the true story is about. If anyone volunteers to tell you what this movie is about in one sentence they would be hard pressed.

The movie is traditional for the first ½ hour and then starts to take the turn as you delve deep into the mind of David Aames (Cruise) who is vapid, spoiled and rather on dimensional. They lead you to believe that you were seeing the rich kid inherit his daddy's empire and toil around life as if it were his playground. This theme does not last long as the audience is then marched through a series of flashbacks and changing personalities which leaves you constantly in the dark about whether you are watching reality or his dreams. I am ok with being in the dark as long as light is shed at some point. I was under the impression at about the midway point that I might not be watching this movie as closely as I should (ie Sixth Sense) and thought the payoff would pull it all together for me. There were blocks of 10 to 20 minutes that were quite boring as the story goes off on tangents that in my opinion have no true value to the over all story. This movie was confusing at many points and not in a "Memento" kind of way.

The movie is slick in it's production and the shots are clearly professional but without a defined purpose this is all lost in the delusions Crowe wants the audience to feel. The fact that Cameron has the pull at the NY film office to block off Times Square in the middle of the day is impressive in itself. The soundtrack is top notch as you would expect Crowe to put together.

To be honest, if there was an ending that tied up everything and made sense I would have felt much better about this film. Instead I walked out with the feeling that this movie was a skewed version of the Elephant Man meets Total Recall.

Successful screenwriter Ed Solomon (MEN IN BLACK) will make his feature debut on LEVITY, a drama he also wrote.  Solomon has attracted a top-notch cast for the film that includes Billy Bob Thornton, Morgan Freeman, Kirsten Dunst and Holly Hunter.  Thornton will star as a convicted killer who turns to a minister (Freeman) upon his release to "find redemption." (Variety)

Remember all that talk about Will Smith starring in Michael Bay's I AM LEGEND?  Forget it. As part of that TERMINATOR 3 deal, Ah-nuld is expected to insist the studio keep him onboard the project. Warners also maintains that at this time it is a Schwarzenegger film, plain and simple. (Variety)

MTV Films plans on making a documentary film based on the life of late rapper Tupac Shakur. The film will be co-produced by Shakur's mother Afeni and will feature never-before-seen footage from Tupac's concerts, as well as home video and journal writings from the rapper.  The pic is currently slated for a 2003 release. Source: New Line Cinema

He's already a virtual lock for a Best Actor Academy Award nomination for TRAINING DAY next year and now, courtesy of New Line Cinema, we have a look at Denzel Washington's next film, JOHN Q.  This is the point when I step aside and let the official synopsis do the talking:

"This cautionary story centers on a man whose nine-year-old son is in desperate need of a life-saving transplant. When he discovers that his medical insurance won't cover the costs of the surgery and alternative government aid is unavailable, John Q. Archibald (Washington) takes a hospital emergency room hostage in a last-ditch attempt to save his child. Produced by Mark Burg, the film is written by James Kearns."

Hanks signs for TERMINAL

December 11, 2001

Source: Hollywood Reporter

Tom Hanks and Jim Carrey must be in a serious battle over who can a) make more movies in a two-year span and/or b) make more runs for an Academy Award. Carrey looked to be in the lead last week when it was announced he would star and produce in a biopic of deranged inventor Howard Hughes but Hanks gained considerable ground on Monday when he joined the DreamWorks production, TERMINAL.  Hanks will star in the film as a Balkan immigrant living in a U.S. airport terminal after wars in his homeland void his passport and eliminate the chance for him to return home.  Andrew Niccol (GATTACA) was once attached to direct but left to film a script he wrote, A RIVER ROAD.  No word on who may direct this version, but with Hanks involved expect nothing but grade-A talent.  The script was originally written by Sacha Gervasi but will see considerable rewrites at the hands of...who else?...Tom Hanks.

Moore talks WATCHMEN adaptation

December 11, 2001

Source: Entertainment Weekly

Reclusive writer Alan Moore (we tried to get him for a FROM HELL interview with no luck) spoke recently with Entertainment Weekly about the planned film version of his classic comic tale THE WATCHMEN.  He told them that he doesn't think any movie could be faithful to his work by mere virtue of the format. "''With a comic, you can take as much time as you want in absorbing that background detail, noticing little things that we might have planted there." He goes on to say "you can also flip back a few pages relatively easily to see where a certain image connects with a line of dialogue from a few pages ago. But in a film, by the nature of the medium, you're being dragged through it at 24 frames per second."  When asked about the ending, which I won't spoil here but let's just say it involves New York City and bad things happening, Moore said that even when Terry Gilliam (12 MONKEYS) planned on making the film in the 1980s his ending was being reworked so the chance of it making the cut now is nil.  Writer and director of the feature film David Hayter (X-MEN) and Universal Pictures both refused to comment on the possible ending of the film.

Sony steps into CGI with ASTROBOY

December 11, 2001

Source: Variety

Looking to mimic the success Disney and DreamWorks have had with their CGI-animated films, Sony announced on Monday that they too would throw their hat into the ring with ASTROBOY. The film would be Sony's first all CGI-animated film but will turn to in-house FX studio Imageworks (STUART LITTLE) to produce the film.  They've brought aboard a veritable who's who of CGI films with Eric Leighton (DINOSAUR) to direct and Todd Alcott (ANTZ) writing the script.

ASTROBOY was created by Japanese artist Osamu Tezuka and first aired in 1982.  The story followed a doctor who attempted to build a boy robot after his own son was killed in a car accident.  The result was an android with super powers who used his skills to fight aliens and protect Earth.  The film is already in the pre-production stages although the earliest release date is thought to be 2004.

Warner Bros. is currently mulling over a possible shift of their high-profile 2003 releases. Originally, THE MATRIX RELOADED was scheduled for a December, 2002 release but was moved to May, 2003 due to the need for increased post-production time.  What's interesting is that the WB is considering moving HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN from it's November, 2003 spot to make room for THE MATRIX REVOLUTIONS - a mere 6 months after the second installment arrives!  Personally, I think this is the absolute right move.  Capitalize on the momentum from the second film by opening the third mere months later. (Variety)

Brad Pitt and Matt Damon will help out buddy George Clooney by filming cameos on his directorial debut CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND.  The two will play contestants on "The Dating Game," the show hosted by main character Chuck Barris (played in the film by Sam Rockwell).  In related news, Pitt will also have a small role in Steven Soderbergh's upcoming film FULL FRONTAL (formerly HOW TO SURVIVE A HOTEL ROOM FIRE and THE ART OF NEGOTIATING A TURN). (USA Today)

According to director Sam Raimi, he's already working on the plot for the SPIDER-MAN sequel which will further explore the dynamic between Peter Parker, Mary Jane Watson and Harry Osborne as they begin life at college.  Stars Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco are all signed for at least two more Spidey films. The first movie opens on May 3rd. (Entertainment Weekly)

Julianna Marguiles, Gabriel Byrne and Isaiah Washington have signed on to star in GHOST SHIP, a film that truly has one of the most original titles I've ever heard.  The film, produced by Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis, revolves around salvagers who find a ship floating aimlessly in the Bering Sea and the strange happenings that occur when they attempt to tow it ashore.  From the team that brought you THE HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL and THIRTEEN GHOSTS?...no thanks. Although some good news is that Christopher McQuarrie (THE USUAL SUSPECTS) has been brought aboard to polish the script. (Hollywood Reporter)

The next CGI-animated film for DreamWorks (after SHREK 2) will be the "underwater mob film" SHARKSLAYER and will feature the voices of Will Smith, Angelina Jolie and Renee Zellweger.  The film is looking at a possible 2004 release date. (Coming Soon)

Bruckheimer to produce PIRATES

December 10, 2001

Source: Variety

Jerry Bruckheimer will produce a live-action feature film based on the popular attraction at Disney World, THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN.  The script, written by Jay Wolpert (who wrote next summer's THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISCO), is still being worked on but will assumedly feature a bunch of pirates drinking and stealing in the Caribbean Sea. Disney is currently scouting locations in the Caribbean to film the project and is anticipating getting underway mid-2002.  Another Disney attraction, The Country Bear Jamboree, has also been turned into a film called THE COUNTRY BEARS, which features Jim Henson animatronic bears voiced by the likes of Haley Joel Osment.

The famed Disney ride is remembered fondly for its "Yo-Ho" theme song and robotic pirates, who chase women and drink their beer.  Personally, this is one of the rides that sticks out most in my memory as the most enjoyable and I never had a problem as a kid waiting in the hour-plus long line just to sit through the short ride.  So can it make an enjoyable movie?  With Bruckheimer involved, sure. I've just got one piece of advice.  Watch CUTTHROAT ISLAND and do everything the opposite.

Help us find a new name for this section!

December 10, 2001

Source: JoBlo.com

Come New Year, "Joey Baloney" as a name will no longer continue on this site. Most people were getting confused with JoBlo and Joey Baloney being the same person, and the truth is that as much as Joey Baloney was doing a great job, Mike Sampson (aka Joey Baloney) is the man behind the NEWS section and it was just time for a change (he is and will remain our Senior News Editor!). Having said that, the section is now called JOEY BALONEY'S MOVIE SCOOPS and obviously needs to be changed.

We will also be revamping the section a little, make things a little fresher and stuff...

Anyway, do you have any suggestions for the name of the new NEWS section? We don't need Mike's name in the title and something related to JoBlo.com as a whole would be nice as well. Remember, the NEWS section is dedicated to covering upcoming movies, news, rumors, release dates, trailers, set pictures, etc...Thanks! -- JoBlo

Well, you asked for it, so we've finally gone and done it! JoBlo.com will officially launch its 1st Annual JoBlo Movie Awards this year, aka the "Golden Schmoes". Our motto is much like the motto of our entire site:

"Where the real movie fans get the final word!"

Anyway, if you didn't have a chance to participate in the naming of the awards or the picking of the categories to be included in the Awards ceremonies (then where the heck were ya!!), you can see all of the finalists below and comment on this event a well. BTW, we will be asking for NOMINATIONS soon, so keep your eyes peeled to our Movie Board for a new forum entitled JOBLO'S MOVIE AWARDS, in which you will be able to participate in the picking of the nominees. The voting for the actual awards will take place sometime in January/February. -- JoBlo

Spade a CHILD STAR

December 10, 2001

Source: Variety

David Spade will star as the title character in FORMER CHILD STAR, which will be written and directed by the above-mentioned Fred Wolf (JOE DIRT).  Spade's character in the film was a child actor with limited success in his adult life, who hires a foster family to help replace the childhood he never had.  Spade and Wolf are also working together on PUKA PETE, a film about a 60s hippie who attempts to reintegrate himself into the 21st Century after being stuck on an island for 40 years.  Now, I personally love Spade's style and sense of humor but why would someone let the guys behind JOE DIRT make another movie is beyond me.  That's Hollywood for ya...
