Ocean's 11 Details

December 29, 2000

Source: Aint it Cool News

A scooper named Renard sent word along to Harry at AICN about some of the finer plot details of Steven Soderbergh's OCEAN'S 11 remake.  All the action will center around a boxing title match, filmed specifically for the movie, between Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis at the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas. The rest of the filming will take place at the famous Bellagio Hotel with some minor filming in Atlantic City.  The scooper claims this information
came on "good authority" so we'll have to wait for official confirmation of this, but it seems to jive with most other information out there.

Apes set pics

December 29, 2000

Source: Coming Attractions

Coming Attractions scored a whole crapload of pictures from PLANET OF THE APES including about fifteen shots of Mark Wahlberg's crashed spacecraft and about three shots of ape extras (out of makeup, damn!).  These are really
high quality shots and you can really start to see how Burton is wrapping his twisted little fingers around this production and making it all his own. I suggest you check them out and wait patiently for a picture of an ape in
full costume and makeup.  And as a quick correction to something we (and others) posted the other day, the previous ape test shots are NOT the apes that will be used in the movie.  Those apes were done by Stan Winston as a preliminary test, NOT by Rick Baker who created the final design for the movie. Still pretty cool though.

One of the "Friends" to play James Bond?

December 28, 2000

Source: IMDb

Perry. Matthew Perry. Here's some news that made me double-check my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st.  It seems that MGM is looking for a new actor to take the role of James Bond once Pierce Brosnan retires after the next movie. And there may be an American stepping into the famous spy's shoes for the first time. Matthew "The Refrigerator" Perry is now in talks to take over the reigns from Brosnan once he steps down. A quote by gossip columnist (keyword here: gossip) Janet Charlton explains; "Studio bigwigs feel Perry has the charm, youth and talent to take the long-running franchise into the new Millennium." Even Nostradamus couldn't have seen this one coming.

RIP: Jason Robards

December 28, 2000

Source: AP

Jason Robards, who is my own personal John Malkovich (I know he's been in tons of movies, I just can't think of their names), passed on early Tuesday afternoon at the age of 78. Robards, who recently played a dying man in PT Anderson's MAGNOLIA, was admitted to a hospital in Bridgeport, Connecticut on Monday and was pronounced dead less than a day later, after a long battle with cancer, spokeswoman Sally Dalton said. Robards won two straight Academy Awards in 1976 and 1977 for ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN and JULIA and was nominated for his portrayal of Howard Hughes in MELVIN AND HOWARD in 1980. More recently in 1999, Robards was awarded a Kennedy Center Honors for lifetime achievement in the Arts. No immediate information about services has been released as of yet. Thanks to Quentin

Ritchie to film Madonna

December 28, 2000

Source: Variety

No, I'm not talking about the honeymoon. Fresh from their well publicized nuptials, director Guy Ritchie (LOCK, STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS, SNATCH) has announced that he will direct his new wife Madonna in his next gangster flick entitled THE MOLE. Filming could start as early as March for Ritchie's third movie where Madonna would take on the role of  "an American girl who comes to England and is caught up in an underworld battle where the hunt is on to find a police informer in one of the gangs." I still think they should do SHANGHAI SURPRISE 2.

Pictures of the Apes

December 27, 2000

Source: Aint it Cool News

AICN scored a pretty neat scoop with three or four test photos of the apes for Tim Burton's re-imagination of PLANET OF THE APES.  These monkeys look considerably different than the one shown in the teaser poster, but they still look pretty damn cool.  Rick Baker continues to top himself.

Final Fantasy sequel?

December 27, 2000

Source: Movie Headlines

The first FINAL FANTASY movie hasn't even hit theaters yet (in fact, the standee just hit theaters this holiday weekend) and director Hirobobu Sakaguchi is already planning a sequel.  While it took the first movie almost four years to get made, producers are betting that a sequel would take only two-thirds the time and cost considerably less money.  These plans should depend on the success of the first movie, which is coming round your parts this July.

Sean Connery to join Austin Powers?

December 27, 2000

Source: Cinescape and New York Post

Sean Connery is considering whether or not to take an offer from the director and star of the AUSTIN POWERS movies, Jay Roach and Mike Myers, to star in the third installment as the film's main villain. Connery was reluctant to rejoin the James Bond spy series but is surprisingly hip to the idea of lampooning a genre he helped make popular.  Could be a great career move for an actor not primarily known for his comic efforts.

Park is Iron Fist!

December 27, 2000

Source: Film Force

Ray Park has officially signed to play Marvel Comics' IRON FIST in Artisan Entertainment's upcoming feature film.  Park, who recently played Toad in another Marvel movie, X-MEN, and is probably best known for his role as Darth Maul, signed the deal last week, according to Film Force.  The movie, which doesn't yet have a script, will be put on the fast track at Artisan and should have a short development span.  Filming is scheduled to begin in June 2001 and producers are currently looking at directors for the project.
