Netflix on your Xbox? Jul. 15, 2008
Source: JoBlo.com
by: Mike Sampson

If you've got an Xbox 360, you already know that you can buy HD versions of movies and TV shows through the Xbox Live Marketplace Video Store. And in an effort to help expand the 360 from video game console to entertainment center, Microsoft has announced a partnership with Netflix that would allow you to instantly stream movies and TV shows directly to your TV. "A growing library of more than 10,000 movies and TV episodes" will be made available by Netflix for Xbox Live users when the partnership goes live this fall. To take advantage of this shnazzy new deal, you need to be an Xbox Live Gold Member as well as have a Netflix membership. On top of that there will be no additional fees. Sez the press release: "From the Netflix Web site, members simply add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues. Those choices will be automatically displayed on the TV screen via Xbox 360 and available to watch instantly." Basically it turns your Xbox into that Roku/Netflix set top box that has been available through Amazon for $99. All this and Microsoft has dropped the price of the 20GB Xbox 360 to $300 (though it is being discontinued in favor of the 60GB version). Maybe now's the time to put the Sega Genesis aside and upgrade?

Extra Tidbit: Nintendo better get off their duffs and upgrade their online offerings...

HEY JOBLO!
What about Sony?

The Playstation 3 is going to be offering movie/TV show sales/rentals too, according to their press conference yesterday.

i hear what you are saying Mut, but for now, this is only about rented videos and such from Netflix. when the time comes that ALL new movies are only available as a digital copy over the internet, then i will say that kinda sucks. i love my DVD collection. i like sifting through my rack of movies to find the one i want to watch.

Why does this seem like the first (or maybe second or third, I dunno) step towards the elimination of physical copies of movies? The studios are all really excited about streaming technology, and understandably so, since it means they wouldn't have to spend a dime on manufacturing. Call me old-fashioned, though, but if I buy something, I'd like to physically own it. I mean, hey, what happens if you're trying to watch a movie and your internet craps out? Bet you'd feel pretty stupid, right? Or if you're halfway through a film, and it freezes and says "buffering?"

Maybe I'm overreacting (I'm a little out of it today), but this just seems like a step in the wrong direction. I guess time will tell.

TO BAD I DON'T HAVE XBOX LIVE AS OF CURRENTLY...
But when I head back to college campus this Fall, I'll be taking advantage of all the stuff Microsoft announced through Live just yesterday at E3.

Microsoft does indeed rock! 'nuff said.

I love my 360, but Microsoft needs to drop the price of the 120gb hard drives with all this new shit they've got going on. Not just Netflix stuff, but the new console upgrade in the fall will allow users to "install" or download their games from disk, to the hard drive for zero load times. Hey, I've only got 8gb left on my 20gb drive (which is only really 16 when all is said and done), so what good do the new features do me? $100 is what they should run, NOT $220!

And Canadians won't be getting in the Netflix cue... that I know of anyway.

Currently, the Netflix online video service is mostly TV shows and older movies. But the idea is - its free. Since I already have a Netflix account ($9/mo) and an XBOX account - this is a win-win for a lot of people. If you don't have a Netflix account - there isn't much of a downside, just keep living your life. :)

STILL NOT SOLD
I'm still unsure on whether or not this will be a hit or a flop. It all depends on when the movies become available to the Xbox 360 users after they've stopped being shown in cinemas I guess. I mean, if they're available just a few months after the movies have stopped being shown in cinemas, then great I'm all for it. But if it's not until say, a few months after they've been released on DVD? I'm just not sure. I will say that securing netflix as a partner is a good movie on MS's behalf, but too many other features are really showing out that the Xbox 360 has an identity crisis atm.

THIS IS THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO MY XBOX
Galzakian - while I agree that the avatars are a horrendous idea, as a movie fan, you have to admit that free netflix on your console is an excellent idea. Instead of spending endless piles of fake money (Microsoft points), I can use my Netflix membership on the f*ckin TV. I would never actually rent National Treasure... but I would watch it for free if I could.

STICK TO BEING A GAMING CONSOLE IMO.
Just another feature that probably less than half of the Xbox 360 community will use. I watched a bit of the Microsoft E3 conference, and most of what was announced is just utter garbage. Like Uno Flash, and Geometry Wars 2. Oh, and avatars. Rehashed content and stealing ideas from Nintendo/Wii much? Microsoft seems like it's in trouble.
