New Spidey 4 writer Jul. 8, 2009

A lot of us expected to hear some kind of official SPIDER-MAN 4 villain announcement at Comic Con later this month, but considering the script is apparently still in a state of flux, that may not be likely.

Yet another writer is taking a swipe at the webbed wonder's fourth wrist-jizzing big-screen supersmackdown. This time it's filmmaker Gary Ross, a frequent collaborator of wallcrawler Tobey Maguire -- the pair worked together on PLEASANTVILLE and SEABISCUIT, and Ross was preparing to direct him in the now-delayed TOKYO SUCKERPUNCH.

Writers James Vanderbilt and David Lindsay-Abaire have seen their drafts tossed in the recycle bin with last week's Daily Bugle. It's unknown if Ross just had a fresh spin on Marvel's swinger, or if Maguire flexed some producer muscles to get him involved.

But the last time the principals on a fourth franchise flick couldn't agree on a script, we got INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL...

Extra Tidbit: Ross' father wrote the original CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON.

While I'm not terribly familiar with Gary Ross' work, I did love Pleasantville. I thought it was very funny and well written, and was visually incredible.

My main hope is that they can maybe pretty please give Spider-Man his tongue in cheak one liners back. They've been so very, very absent ever since the first film - not something I expected from the man who gave us Ash.

As long as Sam Raimi and Tobey Mcguire are involved I don't care how good the script is I won't be getting burned for a fourth time.

This doesn't bode well. Looks like Macguire is getting one of his cronies to come onboard.

Why can't they finish the fucking script already??

The script for the first Spider-Man was written by the writer of the much-maligned Indiana Jones script, David Koepp. It's debatable but not a stretch to argue that his script for the first Spider-Man was less than stellar. But I don't see any connection here or in any other way with Indiana Jones. It seems to me that a lot of films go through multiple revisions and this isn't necessarily a bad thing. There are plenty of films produced with an early draft and one writer that probably could have used some revisions to smooth out rough edges.

As for this film, it definitely is in need of new blood. Alvin Sargent did an excellent job with Spider-Man 2, but he had help from award-winning author Michael Chabon. Perhaps Linday-Abaire could have had the same positive influence? Also, Raimi said on the Spider-Man 3 commentary that Sargent wrote all the Venom and Eddie Brock scenes, so . . .

I think Gary Ross is a good writer, though, so it could be a smart move. However, I wouldn't be concerned until the studio reunited with Koepp on the next film. Then, there might be a problem.

Indy 4 and Spidey 3 were both extremely awful. Aliens aside, that isn't what ruined the movie for me. It was that Indy followed everyone around (especially Ox) around like a little bitch. He didn't even do anything at the end. Also Shia LaBeouf and Cate Blanchett both sucked. Don't even get me started on the nuclear fridges.

And the Darabont script is worse. Has anyone who prefers it actually read it? It had more "tEh aLienZ!1!" in it than you dumbfucks have been complaining about to begin with.

Only Lucas couldn't agree on the script, cuz he's a moron and doesn't know a good script if it was outloud by Patrick Stewart. Indy 4 would of rocked if Lucas hadn't given the thumbs down to the Frank Darabont script.

How hard is it to write an awesome spiderman movie. Give us the lizard, karnage, and/or mysterio. But i guess we all said just give us venom and we'll be happy. Look how that turned out, so who knows.

In my opinion, Gary Ross is one of the best writers in hollywood. Some of his films (i.e. Seabiscuit) aren't really my thing, but there's no doubt that they're exceptionally well-made films. If Ross, is able to write his draft without outside itnerferance I've no doubt that it'll be amazing. Hopefully he won't be replaced by yet another writer, and hopefully these musical chairs antics are because Raimi and co. are determied to get the film *just right* and not because the studio keeps changing their mind.
