New Supes in 2011? Jul. 9, 2009

Source: Variety

The heirs to "Superman" co-creator Jerry Siegel filed suit against both DC Comics and Warner Bros. in years past claiming they were robbed of money throughout various dealings over the years. On Wednesday, a US District Court judge ruled that the Siegels are only allowed to seek profits from DC Comics and not Warner Bros, who obviously had a hand in "Smallville" and the SUPERMAN movies.

OK that's all well and good but what does it mean to the SUPERMAN film franchise? Warner Bros. head Alan Horn testified at the trial about the future of the SUPERMAN franchise at the studio saying that while they "hoped" to make another film, "the property wasn't under development" and "no script had been written." Perhaps even more interesting was the court's ruling that if Warner Bros. did not begin production on a new SUPERMAN movie by 2011, "the Siegels will be able to sue to recover their damages."

So will it be worthwhile to actively begin developing a SUPERMAN movie so that production can begin in two years? Considering how long it took to get SUPERMAN RETURNS made that's not exactly a lot of time...

Extra Tidbit: In 2013 the rights to "Superman" revert to the families of Siegel and co-creator Joe Shuster and no related property may begin without a license from their families.

The only concern I have is that if a new movie is made, it might be rushed.

And they need to make superman a bit more vulnerable and have a real villain to contend with like Bizarro or something. And have them duke it out in some pretty cool scenes where they're smashing everything to shit. Because just being a supergod all the time and only being weakened by Kryptonite is super-lame.

I would also love to see an older Superman. As far as a story goes I think they should draw from the Kingdom Come mini-series. It doesn't necessarily have to be a straight up adaptation, but I'm attracted to the idea of something happening that causes Superman to give up on humanity. I'd also like to see Batman show up in a Superman flick (or vice versa) because I really enjoy the relationship between the two.

I still think they can make a darker Superman, but nothing like Batman.
Batman's ideas are to scare villains away from doing crime, rather than inspire good, more of superstition.
Superman is about inspiring people to do good, that they don’t have to use their strengths for their own personal benefit all the time.
I still think a Superman film could be interesting. Why the suit? Do we really need him? Etc.

Routh was good. It was the script and the direction they took it in that wasn't good. Superson was hideous, as was Luthor's plot.

Routh yes. Singer no.

What I don't get is they want to take it in this so called "dark" direction, but when was he ever really dark? That's Batman's thing.
That's why there's such a good contrast between the two heroes.

Well since Routh's contract expired then maybe it won't be him. I liked Routh, I think he fit the part more than he's getting credit for.

It's not his fault the script was kinda crappy.

If they are going to reboot/reimagine the series, I hope it's done more like the last Hulk movie where they introduce the character but mostly allude to things that are canon. We don't need a 30-45 minute segment of baby Clark Kent and his parents learning he's different, et al.
There is no on in America who will look at the movie listings and say "Hmmm... Super. Man. I wonder what that's about. Or is it Superman? I'll have to ask someone who's ever been alive in America since the 40s." People KNOW who he is. Get a good villain and make a great story.
PS not every story has to be dark. He can just have trouble balancing his work/super life. Maybe Supes 2 or 3 he can be all turmoil-y about his wants vs responsibilities.
