WEEKEND BOX-OFFICE

A
round of applause for TDK!

Well, nobody can say
that we didn't see this coming, but in all honestly, I didn't
think THE DARK KNIGHT had the kind of "general appeal"
that would smash all-time box-office records, but I was wrong as
hell, as TDK opened with $155M in its first three days of release,
besting SPIDER-MAN 3's previous record of $151M (see all-time list
of biggest opening HERE).
Just as a reminder, 2005's BATMAN BEGINS only opened with $48M and
went on to gross $205M, which is probably what TDK will have made by
next weekend!
The buzz, pre-ticket
sales and early
reviews of the film had all been extremely positive, leading
to a weekend opening much like a perfect storm. Not to mention
that the film also represented late actor Heath Ledger biggest screen
role to date, which many agree will be nominated for an Oscar at
the end of the year. Others are debating whether or not the film itself
should also earn a 'Best Picture' nomination for the filmmakers,
but I guess only time will tell us that. The one thing that is for
sure is that fanboys were not disappointed in the film, as TDK has already
surpassed THE GODFATHER as the #1
rated film on the IMDB.

MAMMA MIA also made some decent cash for a film
that was counter-programming galore vis-a-vis THE DARK KNIGHT,
while SPACE CHIMPS (another counter-programmer) didn't fare so
well, scoring only about $7M despite the weekend itself breaking
the record for the greatest revenues earned over a 3-day weekend
($253M / the previous record was $218M during the weekend of July
7, 2006). HELLBOY 2 was the biggest "loser" of the
weekend, dropping 70% of its audience from last weekend, and
falling to 5th place on the box-office charts. Needless to say,
opening that comic book movie one week before TDK was probably not
the best idea in the world.
Next week sees the
release of 2 other big summer movies, the first of which reunites
the two stars of TALLADEGA NIGHTS, Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly
with the director of that film, Adam McKay, for STEP
BROTHERS, while director Chris Carter is back with the stars
of his ground-breaking TV show in X-FILES:
I WANT TO BELIEVE. Now since pretty much everyone who visits
this site has seen THE DARK KNIGHT already, the question of the
day is: How much would you rate TDK out of 10? VOTE
