No digital Indy 4?

Is your local theater still doing things the old-fashioned way, and hasn't converted to digital projection yet? Don't sweat it, you'll still be able to catch INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL when it hits in a few months.

In fact, that's the only way you'll be able to see the whip-smart relic collector, per orders of The Beard himself.

Indy's cousin 'Ohio Munson' tells us Paramount is informing theaters that per Steven Spieberg, INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL will NOT be available in digital format. The studio is requesting that complexes who can't project 35mm format let them know.

There you have it. Our favorite scrappy part-time professor (who, sadly, is named after the dog) prefers to remain firmly in the 20th century for now.

UPDATE: This has since been supported by another source, with the caveat of "unless Spielberg has a last minute change of heart"... likely meaning if sticking with analog has a significant impact on potential business (which seems improbable, since many theaters still have standard projectors on hand, and people will go wherever necessary to see the flick anyway).

Source: JoBlo

Extra Tidbit: Indy's boots are made by Alden Shoes and still sold today. You can kick some shit like Jones!

I love this idea.
I'm not completely against digital (especially for indie filmmakers) but I'm glad they're sticking with 35ml for this flick, it's just much better for me. I just like light and celluloid together, it's not t.v. it's cinema.

SPIELBERG HAS COMMON SENSE
Well at least he lets people show the movie than promote the latest technology. Am down with that. Also I own a pair of the boots for the last two years and they rock!! Fully worth the price you pay.

Awesome news. Digital cinema sucks and will be the end of movies. So it's good to know there at least some people in Hollywood who get that.

I like the concept that this movie is trying to remain more like an older themed movie. Unfortunately, the dichotomy between old film technology/classic moviemaking and modern CGI might mar the efforts of presenting in 35mm. I mean that 35mm is all fine and dandy, but will the movie still have glaring CGI that will throw you out of the retro-feel? If so, the purpose of going the film route w...

HELL YES!!
It's sad that film is a dying format.
Are that many theaters already all digital? wow.
Despite jumps in High Def technology, picture quality is still nowhere near the resolution of film, which can be millions of times more clear than a digital projection.
I'm glad Spielberg is sticking up for the "old school".

Makes sense. Spielberg is old-school, and, unlike Lucas, still prefers film over DV. Guess that preference extends to projectors, as well.

In all honesty...
...Indy 4 is arguably the MOST anticipated theatrical release of the century. And that pretty much means that Spielberg right now could, if he wanted to, make multiplexes do just about whatever the hell he wants them to, because they're gonna make boodles on this movie, so not to play along is just stupid. Unless Spielberg changes his mind.

Good. Digital projection sucks unless you're watching Ratatouille or something. Seriously, fix the projectors. Most of the time, the normal footage we usually see aren't what the filmmakers intended anyway. The bulb is usually too dim; Spielberg said this, I forgot where.

Nothing beats old school projection. Digital is just an imitation.

Hmmmm.
I love that they are planning on only showing it in the 35 mm format but I've really gotta wonder how long this will be the case. Do the big wigs realize how many theaters are all digital now? Pretty much every Regal Cinema, AMC/Loews Cinema, Carmike and Cinemark theater is digital now. These places are responsible for upwards of 1,500 Sites (and around 16,000 screens!). Pretty much every Regal Cinema, AMC/Loews Cinema, Carmike and Cinemark theater is digital now. These places are responsible for upwards of 1,500 Sites (and around 16,000 screens!). I know if this were to stay the same, there would be only one theater in my area that would be able to show the new Indy movie. And their theater capacity is only 300 per cinema (and that's only in the two biggest cinemas. The other 5 theaters hold a little over 100)

I can't see this staying in the only 35 mm format release for long unless some sort of amazing compromise is made. Like scanning in a digital copy of the 35 mm print (pops, scratches and all)

I like that Spielberg is really looking to keep this Indy installment in the retro '80s-'90s version of the '50s. Next thing you know they'll be releasing this thing on VHS only. Which while very unlikely, wouldn't disappoint me greatly, as DVDs (and I'm sure Blu-Ray as well) can only be so good. I swear every DVD I get has some sort of glitch on it. But I digress. Bottom line, this is some in...
