"But what I really want to do is direct."
We've heard those words spill from a thousand actors' lips, but while some make a seamless transition from standing before to sitting behind the camera (Mel Gibson, Peter Berg, George Clooney), others don't fare so well (maybe you saw ALBINO ALLIGATOR).
Natalie Portman is hoping to get more on the acclaimed side with people like Eastwood, Costner and Sean Penn. She'll make her directing debut on an adaptation of Israeli author Amos Oz's memoir A TALE OF LOVE AND DARKNESS.
Portman, all growed up from her breakthrough jailbait turn in THE PROFESSIONAL, wants to make the dense, downbeat biography in the author's native Hebrew, opting for artsy ambitions over commercial prospects. The epic story follows Oz's childhood in war-torn Jerusalem. Which makes the accompanying photo seem somewhat inappropriate, but hey, she's sexy.
Extra Tidbit:
Hopefully Portman forgot every piece of advice from her prequel director George Lucas.

I can't say that I'm all that excited but I will say that she's one of the few young actors or actresses that I think can pull this off. |

TALENTED, YES
What else has Natalie Portman wowed us in besides The Professional, Closer and V For Vendetta? How about Garden State, Cold Mountain, Paris Je T'aime, Free Zone and Everyone Says I Love You? Heck even in most of the crappy films she's in she still turns in a fine performance. Goya's Ghosts and My Blueberry Nights were disappointments but she was one of the bright spots in both. All this would help explain why she was nominated for an oscar when she was only 23.
Yeah based on the above I'd say she has talent.
Oh and BrokenDreamer, a relatively new entry in the actress turned successful director field that you forgot, Sarah Polley. |

No doubt she's attractive as hell and a decent actor but a talented one? After Professional, Closer, and V for Vendetta (maybe), what else has she really wowed you in? Attack of the Clones? |

DON'T FORGET . . .
Some other actors who became successful directors )or at least made one good film): Todd Field, Jon Favreau, Tim Robbins, Thomas McCarthy, Ben Affleck (if you could call him an actor). For actresses, I can only think of one: Penny Marshall. Hopefully Natalie Portman proves to be a talented director and makes at least one good movie. |

I'll be anxious to see how portman does as a director, but i hope she doesn't stay behind the camera too long. There's a shortage of actresses with the beauty and talent she has. |
