Ratner turns Valiant Mar. 11, 2008

Holy crap! I didn't see this one coming... Brett Ratner has signed on to develop and direct a movie based on the Valiant Comics title HARBINGER for Paramount. HARBINGER was part of the relaunch of Valiant in the early-90s when I was truly geeking out on comics. The imprint saw early success with titles like "Solar: Man of the Atom," "Magnus Robot Fighter" and "Turok." But mismanagment led Valiant to implode after just a few highly successful years. But now it's back in a big way thanks to Ratner who, after X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, wanted to develop his own superhero franchise. The plot follows a group of teenagers with superhuman abilities struggling with their newfound powers and fighting the most powerful superhuman Toyo Harada who is bent on world domination. Doesn't sound so great just based on my little synopsis but there's much more to it than that, trust me. Whether Ratner will bring all that out on screen or boil it down to a teen version of FANTASTIC FOUR remains to be seen. Producer Arnon Milchan says he and Ratner envision the property to be like a "young BLADE RUNNER." Hmmm. I don't have the utmost faith in Ratner but I'm definitely curious about this property. At least good to see that those old Valiant comics I have sitting in a box in the basement might actually be worth something one day...

Extra Tidbit: Anybody out there actually own a copy of "Harbinger #0"?

Never heard of the comic book, but I'm sure the fans aren't too happy that Brett "I Make Everything Obvious" Ratner is directing. I'm not one of his haters, there are far worse directors out there, but his directing also doesn't excite me. He's an okay studio shill, who likes to pretend he's an auteur. I'm sure I'll see it when it's on DVD, but for now I can't get excited.

No offense intended to any Valiant fans, but first I read that the rights have been snatched up to "Bone", and now this. They really are going to make every comic property into a film franchise, no matter how obscure..

My old comic shop owner was always trying to sell me on Valiant comics, saying that while Image had the artwork, Valiant had the stories. I could never much get into their characters, though, except Bloodshot, who is/was kickass.

So I won't be surprised I guess when I hear the movie rights get snatched up to Jim Starlin's "Plasm" next.

Wow, great to hear from all the Valiant fans. I too was a huge Valiant fan, collecting most of their titles. My favs being XO Manowar, Eternal Warrior, Archer and Armstrong and of course Magnus. The crossovers in their universe were great, I enjoyed seeing all of the characters turn up in all of the other books.

Huh. You know, it's funny, but I was actually a pretty big Valiant fan back in the day. "Harbinger" was good, "H.A.R.D. Corps," "X-O Manowar" ... my personal fave was "Magnus Robot Fighter" (that boy kicked all kinds of ass). That being said, this certainly has the potential to be a pretty sweet movie. Just so long as it's "Rush Hour 1" Ratner at the helm, instead of "RH 2/3." Come on, Brett! You can do it! Don't f*ck up!
