Reeves a Watchman? Feb. 21, 2007

Before you Alan Moore fanboys get your tighty whiteys in a twist, Keanu Reeves won't be starring as Dr. Manhattan in THE WATCHMEN. Reeves has though signed on to star in the upcoming crime drama THE NIGHT WATCHMEN. The film, to be directed by David Ayer (HARSH TIMES) with a script by James Ellroy, follows a homicide cop in the wake of the OJ Simpson verdict who finds he no longer has what it takes. WATCHMAN has been floating around Hollywood for many years now with Spike Lee and Oliver Stone at different points flirting with the project. Paramount recently put the project in turnaround where Fox Searchlight picked it up and brought in Ayer to direct. Reeves hasn't been doing much since THE LAKE HOUSE and will begin production on WATCHMAN this April in LA.

Extra Tidbit: This movie should not be confused with NIGHT WATCH, NIGHTWATCH, The Night Watch or the watch man.

I don't know if I could call myself a fanboy of "Watchmen" I do read it about 4 to 6 times a year. Reeves would have fit Daniel's self-depreciation, loathing and pining.

In a non-Alan Moore-related comment, I am at least interested that David Ayer is working from a script by James Ellroy. They know their way around some of the rougher parts of L.A., at least figuratively. And since Reeves is a better actor by half than what people give him credit for (he's learning, at least) I could certainly see him doing well with this, even if the story sounds like it could use a bit of fleshing out.

Reeves would have been great as Rorschach or Daniel (Nite Owl 2).
