Review Date: June 28, 2007
Director: Len Wiseman
Writer: Mark Bomback
Producers: Michael Fottrell, John McTiernan, Arnold Rifkin, Bruce Willis
Actors:
Bruce Willis as John
Justin Long as Thomas
Timothy Olyphant as Thomas
Plot:
Detective John McLane is back and this time he’s caught in the middle of a cyber-hacking scheme to bring the U.S. to a halt. McLane is responsible for taking care of one particular hacker, who seems to have gotten in a little over his head. What ensues is a whole lot of action, a whole lot of tits and ass and a whole lot more action. Well okay, there are no tits and ass in the film, but there is plenty of action! Bruce Willis ensues.
Critique:
This was a good action movie. It wasn’t a great action film because its storyline was preposterous (even for an “action movie”) and its bad guys were pretty lame, but overall the scenes featuring action were a’plenty, the film’s pace and rapid fire dialogue were spot-on and most importantly, the man of the hour, the man with the plan, Detective John McLane (aka Bruce Willis) kicked ass, took numbers, kicked a little more ass and took down some more numbers. If you’re one to point out implausibilities in movies though, you should totally avoid this film as it’s jam-packed with moments that will make you go “That makes no sense, dude!” including the federal government seemingly paralyzed by a terrorist attack, while one NYPD officer is able to take them ALL on, figure it ALL out and save his daughter and the entire United States of America, at the same time. Mind you, he’s Johnny fuckin’ McLane, but still!! It seems like the baddies got into high-security places way too easily and to be honest with you, the same goes for McLane, who ended up breaking into the baddies’ high-security spots like one would walk into a flea market. Seriously folks, the security in these places was a joke and the film makes the U.S. look like it’s actually dropped back a few steps after 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina, but hey….as they say in the good book: “It’s just a movie!”. So I’ll let all those over-the-top moments go and stick to the stuff that did work in the film which were its action sequences and plenty of them!

Kudos to director Len Wiseman for not overdoing it on the quick-editing and allowing us to see the action, for the most part. There were explosions, shit with guns, shit with cars, shit with helicopters and even a wicked cool fight vis-à-vis Maggie Q (who up until that point, was basically just rebooting her character from MI-3). There’s also a damn sweet highway attack featuring an F-35 jet and a big-rig truck that had me salivating in the “ball area”. Add that to a nice supporting turn from Justin Long, who I’ve adored since GALAXY QUEST, hotness via the aforementioned Asian hottie and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, a fun little cameo by the king of the fanboys, Kevin Smith, and you’ve got yourself a nice package that certainly did not seem to be affected by its PG-13 rating (the first 3 DIE HARD flicks were rated R). With all of the film’s pre-release negativity over its teen rating, it ultimately turned out to be a non-issue. Sure, the infamous “Yippee-ka-yay motherfucker” felt a little forced (and compromised), but again, McLane kept rockin’ hard and Bruce still looks like he can handle a couple of more of these, so props to the man with the Superman-like abilities. I think he does get the most hurt in this film though; to the point that you’re thinking that he’s Michael Myers or something…you ever gonna die, man?!? Oh, and as for Timothy Olyphant as the leader of the bad guys: meh. I actually really dig Olyphant, adored him in GO (if you haven’t seen that film, check it out like…today!), was scared by him in THE GIRL NEXT DOOR and love his character in “Deadwood”, but he just seemed miscast here. Too young.

I want the dude behind all of this major nastiness to be a Hans Gruber type…you know, old, pissed-at-the-world and German or some shit!! (hehehe) Olyphant’s baby-face just didn’t cut it for me completely, but having said that, the man did his best in the part and certainly didn’t stink or anything…I just think a more experienced character would have pulled me further into the plot. The rest of his goons were also pretty one-dimensional and too easy to kill (except for Q), but the film still moved at a clip, never bored me, offered an “interesting” enough story-line for me to follow, and again, slam-dunked about half a dozen fun action sequences around the great McLane, enough for me to be entertained for the entire run of the picture. Just like Bond tweaked its formula to “fit into” the new world of action cinema today (i.e. become more like BOURNE), the folks behind DIE HARD have done the same thing here, bringing their hero into the new age with more action, more technology and less fuck yous. I enjoyed it overall, but still kinda missed…you know, the ol’ style of action movies. Then again, maybe I’m turning into an old fart.

Title doesn't deserve to be Die Hard

And why is that? It seems to me that today they can't make realistic, good action movies anymore. Die Hard 4 was full of plotholes, lots of recognisable cgi and used oneliners and ideas. Even John McClane had been transformed to a dull action robot.
The target audiences were teenagers and well, the PG-13 really says it all. But on the bright side if you

For me (and propably to someone else) who values plot over cgi the movie was a total disappointment. Even more so because they could have made it better with making it a bit realistic. But hey, you can't have it all & I fortunately have the parts 1-3 and can get back to them anytime I want to see John McClane really kicking ass!

Overrated

I mean, it's fun. For most of the part. And while we are used to larger-than-life storylines and action scenes in any Die Hard movie, the writers of this one seemed to be pushing their luck. While McLame vs. the plane scene was fantastically well-made, I felt the need of more than just suspension of disbelief. The movie was overlong (seriously, why would they need more than 130 minutes for a silly popcorn movie) and if it wasn't for Bruce Willis and his nostalgic presence AND the Die Hard

Why 7/10 this movie desreve more

I was deadly engaged in watching these super action scenes coming one after one. This movie was an outstanding nonstop action movie like XXX. While watching every scene of this movie I thought that is its best scene but after some time when another scene came I changed my decision and this made all movie as a whole best scene. Yes believe me this movie got a best plot, visual effects and scenes. Leading role I mean our hero is a perfect match with movie plot; even villain’s character was very

Situation created by director was one of the best situations in action movie. In the end I will say this movie deserve to have high rate so I am giving it 9/10 and it is one of my favorite movie in my list.

For sure this is the weakest die hard movie, but still not that bad. I thought that I would not like Justin Long, but he was good. The action sequence was not bad either but the jet at the end when McClane felt on it was too stupid. At one moment I thought he would jump in the pilot seat and fly the jet... jezz.
I thing McClane was much better in a confine environnement like a building or an airport... but not saving the world... cmon it should have been more realistic than a James Bond.

What about at the beggining of the attack that everybody are in the street and at the end we see no one in the street... where all the people disappears.

I but a 7 but it's more like a 6.5/10.

I liked it more then i though i would. Good non stop action. Bruce Willis was great.

The plane scene in the end bugged me incredibly much and more bad language and violence would do wonders but I guess I have to live it. 'Dammit' shouldn't be used instead of better words in a Die Hard movie.

Think I would give it 7/10.

Die Hard 4

Loved it. Im a die hard fan which certainly helps it for me but McClane was bad ass in this film and I was hooked right away. Bruce Willis has shown again why he is the action hero of our time. Yippie Ki Yay (Bang!)

You know I love ya, baby.

But... Justin Long as MATTHEW.

I adore Timothy Olyphant and really hated that he quite clearly was only in this for the paycheck and the screentime. I never thought he'd look so much like Ben Affleck in all my wildest thoughts. And I've thought of him in many different scenarios.

I'm not being generous with my 6. I think it's earned. Entertaining and mindless, the most that we could expect from an action flick.

Oh, and who wants to place bets now on hearing that Kevin Smith lost a hundred plus pounds via gastric bypass in the next 3-5 years? Fat bastard, indeed. He's gone way past the snootch and looks a little too bootch.

I'm going to go to sleep now and dream of 1988.

With a 6, I am being generous. I'm giving it a 6 purely because Bruce Willis knows that character and fits back into it perfectly - despite all of the awful plotholes around him he could fall into. The sets are awful. All concrete and hard angles, which would be fine except that they all LOOK like sets. Nothing seems lived in with the possible exception of Justin Long's apartment. The photography is bad. All "Underworld" grimy and murky. As for the rest of the cast? As I said, Willis is on his

I like the kid overall, and he served his purpose. Olyphant was... ok, but nothing special. As "THE" villain in the film, he's weak. (And I like him too.) Yes, Maggie Q is unbelievably hot, and yes her hand to hand fight with Willis is pretty cool, but then it goes immediately back to over the top for her... well, I won't spoil it here, but suffice it to say: if you watched Willis on Letterman last night, then you already know that Fox gave away a major plot point in their clip (WTF? Can Fox do nothing right???). Cliff Curtis? You're an excellent actor, man... What happened? The music made some nice nods to Kamen's score for the first film. The Lucy McClane thing was fine, but unnecessary, and K Smith didn't bug me at all. You could tell they softened him from the teaser. As for the rating. Yeah. I think you could tell - from the moment the lights went down and the trailer for a Disney family film starring "The Rock" came on. (Two guys in our theater cried out, "Why?!!"). McClane says "Bitch" a few times and some other stuff, but overall, I REALLY REALLY miss the 'R.' I won't even go into the new and improved McClane as unstoppable T-1000 aspect. Yeah, he gets messed up, but, he never stops to breath like he did in the first or even second. Anyway. Color me disappointed. Gonna go cry now.

Compromised but still Die Hard

I was worried when i sat down to this movie. But when i saw 1408 and loved it despite the PG-13 i was still pretty hopeful. Needless to say, i loved it. I'm not going to lie, this didnt feel like a PG-13 film to me. Just a quick edit here and there but yet it satisfied me to a T. Willis was the Shit, Long was hilarious, and Olyphant did what was needed. The Action was all over the place and i was never bored or intrigued throughout the whole movie. THIS IS STILL DIE HARD PEOPLE, and it still
