NOTE FROM JOBLO: This review was one of the first ones that I ever wrote for this site. I've seen this film about a dozen times since and now consider it one of my favorite movies of all-time. If interested in my "updated review", check out my book "The 50 Coolest Movies of All-Time".

This film lacks much of the "punch" and originality that I loved about the Coens' earlier pictures. It never really bored me at any point, but at the same time, it never really excited me either. The comedy was lacking (only one inspired scene with John Turturro playing a stereotypical Latin bowler was laugh-out funny), and the rest of the movie just seemed to be a handful of exaggerated characters that would never really exist, be it not for Coen brother movies. I couldn't help but think about the fact that this film would never have been made, were it written by a Joe Schmoe or Johnny Lunchpail. It just wasn't funny, original or interesting enough to warrant any financing from anyone, regardless of their name. In my opinion, the Coen brothers seem to have walked through this film, without much thought to plot, humour or style, for that matter (the Coens' distinctive style could only be spotted in a couple of shots).

On a positive note, the character of The Dude, and its performance by Jeff Bridges, was definitely one of the best of the year, and one that a couple of my friends are sure to mimic in their own disastrous futures. John Goodman's offering as the buddy on the edge was also a solid tour de force. Thankfully, these two kept me from falling asleep. Then again, if you're in the mood to watch a mindless story line filled with a slew of exaggerated characters, and one funny scene with John Turturro, then by all means, go ahead and check this puppy out. The only cool thing that I seem to have gotten out of this movie is the extreme craving for White Russians (great drink, by the way).

My favorite movie of all time

I can understand the initial low rating from Joe Blo (but perhaps think about an amended score) because on my first viewing I dindnt get it, I remember being slightly bored, think I was slightly toasted at the time also. But for some reason I watched it again it seemed funnier. By the 3rd viewing it clicked and I know regard it is the funniest movie I have ever seen. The best thing about this movie is that it truly does get better every time you see, which if you consider is a very real rarity

Jo Blo missed the boat on this one

6/10??? What the heck was Jo Blo thinking???

This is one of my top 3 comedies of all time. I put it right up there with Blazing Saddles.

If you don't get it the first time watch it again.....and again.....and again......

Goodman's role as Walter Sobchak is in a word classic. John Tuturro's Jesus Quintana is one of the best minor characters of all time.

The dialogue is witty, the characters are incredible and the plot is outrageous. What's not to love????

Improves w/ Age & Viewings

When I first saw this flick maybe 5 years ago, I wasn't impressed. In fact, I didn't even think it was funny (except for Walter ranting at Little Larry about what happens when you do a stranger wrong). But due to my friends (and my old man) loving it so much, I've seen it plenty of times since and realized something- like a fine wine, this movie gets better with age, and viewings. You catch funnier moments and lines the more time you watch, you develop a way of talking just like the Dude

You catch funnier moments and lines the more time you watch, you develop a way of talking just like the Dude himself, and realizing that he was high and drunk 99% of the movie, and in that sense, this film is genious.

It does have it's problems, and it feels like it drags on after about the half way point. But rest assured, there's a classic moment gearing to pounce all the while, even up to the last minute with the Dude abideing.

THE BIG LEBOWSKI will be a cult classic from now til the end of time (unless people stop drinking, stop bowling and stop smoking the pot).
