Fight Club (1999)
star Printer-Friendly version
Review Date: October 07, 1999
Director: David Fincher
Writer: Jim Uhls
Producers: Ross Bell, Cean Chaffin, Art Linson
Actors:
Brad Pitt
Edward Norton
Helena Bonham Carter
Plot:
A young, disheartened male hooks up with another cool rockin' young male who likes to live life to its rawest, and the two men start up a local "fight club", which no one (including this critic) can talk about. When the high of the fights are no longer enough to satisfy the duo, they decide to take things to another level.
Critique:
Every now and then, a film comes along with balls big enough to pull you by the hair, bang you against the wall and order you to "wake the fuck up!" and question your entire purpose of life. AMERICAN BEAUTY was a variance of that type of film, primarily targeted to the baby-boom family audience. FIGHT CLUB is the fantasy answer to many of the questions facing the doomed male "generation Xers" of the nineties. When contemplating your reality is a task too depressing to reflect upon, why not invent your own tangible existence and allow it to replenish your lost spirit and sense of direction? This film gave me a strong sense of power, a visceral energy, opening my eyes to aspects of my life which had previously laid dormant. I understood Norton's character. He spoke to me. He understood me. He understood a lot of my buddies. We understood him. This film is NOT for everyone. It's quite long at close to two and a half hours, it's deeper than the commercials make it out to be, and it's definitely going to be appreciated on certain levels more by men than women. And that ain't sexist, that's just like I think THELMA & LOUISE is a great movie, but some women considered it to be their wake-up call. FIGHT CLUB would be ours.

Most importantly, besides all of the philosophical poignancies of this film, is the fact that the movie entertained me thoroughly. It had a Fincher-feel (We could say that now), many unique ways of presenting the film's developments, a dark, brooding look, excellent portrayals by all of the actors involved, a pounding soundtrack, which I wish they had utilized to a stronger degree, black humor (!), and a conclusion which can only make you want to see the film all over again. Toss all that in with plenty of LOST HIGHWAY-type touches, homosexual undertones, and oh yes...a hot, steaming plate of the ol' ultra-violence!! Unlike some people, I do not think any of the violence in this film was overdone, in fact, once you understand the message of the film, you should truly be able to appreciate its precise raison-d'etre. It's not even about the fight clubs themselves (Nuff said)! Another thing I loved about this film is its trailer, which thankfully gave us very little about the plot, and left so much more to the imagination. Excellent appetizer! Another sign of a great film is when it has me chattering it up with my buddies afterwards. FIGHT CLUB kept us yapping for hours on end. Figuring this thing out, then another thing, and yet another. Very cool!

One piece of advice that I will hand over to people who have yet to see this film is that you should go in with a completely open mind. It is very important for you, much like the main character in this film, to flush all of your preconceptions and expectations of a film. See it as a painting and study its texture while discovering its many sorted hidden messages. Or better yet...see it so that you could check out Brad Pitt's crazy six-pack abs!! Wow, what a man and whatta movie! See it or I'll have to fight you in the parking lot after work!

PERFECTION!

I'm about to break all the rules of Fight Club in this review...

This movie is an absolutely crazy, in your face, awesome look at the way corporations have shaped our country. I don't think any other flick has completely sucked me into its world and showed me what I was missing. David Fincher gave Hollywood and the whole world a big bloody middle finger when he made this and in my opinion there had never been a better movie made that had this strong of a reaction and made sure that those

This movie is an absolutely crazy, in your face, awesome look at the way corporations have shaped our country. I don't think any other flick has completely sucked me into its world and showed me what I was missing. David Fincher gave Hollywood and the whole world a big bloody middle finger when he made this and in my opinion there had never been a better movie made that had this strong of a reaction and made sure that those reactions would stay with everyone for all time.

I'm not sure if this can be considered a satire but if so, then this movie is the poster child for all satires. For anybody born between 1985 and 1999 this is the pinnacle of movie going experiences and I'm included in that group of people who believe that no other movie has grabbed a hold of a nation and shook the foundation of their lives and said "Get the FUCK UP and do something with your life"!.

Everything about this movies screams PERFECTION. The acting is top notch from everyone involved (Norton, Pitt, Bonham Carter, & Meat Loaf) with all the characters making us as the audience feel sympathetic, angry, and every other feeling for them. Tyler Durden is one of the best movie characters of all time and also one of the coolest on screen presences ever.

I will close this review by saying this:

This is your life and it's ending one minute at a time.

&

Fuck off with your sofa units and strine green stripe patterns, I say never be complete, I say stop being perfect, I say let... lets evolve, let the chips fall where they may.

Amazing.

This is one of those movies for me that didn't quite hit me the first or even second time I watched it. But finally when it did, it blew me away. I couldn't stop thinking about it for days. The sad part is, a lot of people who like this movie, like it for the "fighting" when that isn't what this movie is truely about. For those who haven't seen it, do exactly what joblo said, watch it with an open mind.

I'm glad that the user average for this spectacular film is a 10 because it deserves no less. I just can't understand how people could bear to dislike this film; it's intelligent, hilarious and full of great ideas and geniunely interesting observations. But that's just the subject matter; the acting and direction are top-notch, Pitt and norton are spectacular and Fincher gives the film the same feel as the equally-great book. And there's also much to be said for the editing and music. Overall,

A Masterpiece of Filmmaking

JoBlo said everything.
This movie is a big fucking wake-up call to anyone who has ever gone through life brooding on how dull things can be. Fight Club doesn't just break you out of that trance by clicking its fingers, it does it by punching you full in the face. Everything from the brilliant script to the performances of the actors to the dark and gritty directorial style of Fincher is perfect in this film. It is a deep and thought-provoking film that holds up again and again on repeated

Well Done Fincher

Ladies and Gentlemen, the greatest film after WW2 (and if u can find a film better than this before WW2 call me) This film was magnificent from start to finish and had perfect performences even from Bob. Norton proved himself and Brad pitt did some serious ass kicking. I loved the story and even though the surprise twist was ruined, the film has still effected me. Well done to everyone and anyone who had a part in this film, FANTASTIC

I watched this again for the 2oth time yesterday and it still reigns as one of the best movies I have ever seen. The script is so fucking mind bending and the violence is secondary to the awsome plot. JoBlo go it right on this one! 10/10

I too agree with Joblo 100% This is the best movie to come out in the past 20 years. And is also my second favorite, if not my favorite movie of all time. People can try and try to copy it, but nothing will ever come close to it. And in 20 years they better not come out with a goddamn remake like they do with just about everything.
