Who was there?
Director Jonathan
Mostow
Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger

How
cool was our trip out West this year? Damn...on top of literally seeing
both Gwyneth Paltrow and Denise Richards within minutes of one another
during my lunch with one of the studio folk at a Starbucks in Hollywood,
hearing Chris Penn wheezing and running right past the Arrow and I
during one of our strolls down Venice Beach and seeing Sylvester
Stallone pick up some video award at the Vegas VSDA convention...this
panel was one of the nicer surprises to complete out whirlwind package,
as none other than Sly's action-hero competitor from the 1980s, Arnold
Schwarzenegger, made an unannounced and electrifying appearance at the
Con. Not knowing about any T3 connection at the Con this year, I was
already pretty happy upon hearing that director Jonathan Mostow
(BREAKDOWN, U-571) was showing up to present us with a few minutes of
the presently-still-shooting production of T3: RISE OF THE MACHINES (the
film co-stars Nick Stahl in the Edward Furlong role, as well as Claire
Danes and Kristinna Loken as the Terminatrix), but when Arnie was
announced...all bets were off. I was officially enjoying my trip all
around, and that's even despite the wicked hangovers every morning (man's gotta relax,
right?).
Anyway,
when Mostow first hit the stage, he talked about how excited he was to
be shooting the movie, he talked about how he was keeping it as
secretive as possible ("have you noticed that no script copies have
leaked on to the Net") and he said that he couldn't say much about
the story at this point, but that we should expect several "cool
surprises in the movie". He also said that the film was still 11
months from completion (tentative release date: July 4, 2003), and that
they still had to add all kinds of effects to it later. Now before
showing us a 2-minute clip of several snippets from the movie, Mostow
made sure to let everyone know that it would not have any effects in it
at this point, and that the score and other aspects would be changed as
well. He basically just wanted to give us a "taste" of the
movie...which was nice, I thought. He also said that it would be the
"first footage shown to anyone in the world of the film",
which was also cool to hear. Yay, we're special! :)
But
before showing us the clip, Mostow said that he also wanted to bring a
friend out to watch it with us and that's when he introduced the
Austrian giant himself: Arnold Schwarzenegger. Arnie came out in his
usual erect style, dressed up in a stylish suit and waving
enthusiastically to the crowd, smile plastered from one end of his face
to the other. The crowd jumped to its feet, and I almost dropped my beer
right then and there (although thankfully, I caught it...phew!). So
Arnold grabs the mike and says: "I told you that I'd be back last
time and here I am!" Once again, the crowd went ape-shit and I was the biggest ape of them all. Arnold then
turned to director Mostow and said, "Give Jonathan Mostow a big hand...he's fantastic!!"
Once more, the audience went bonkers, as I continued to join in the
adrenalin rush of it all ("wow, it's the real Terminator right
there!"). It goes without saying that I would have gotten up on
stage and given Mr. Mostow a hand-job if Arnie had asked at that
point. Thankfully for all involved...he never did.
So
the crowd and Arnold settle down enough to shut the lights and wait to
see the footage from T3. We see it all and other than not revealing one
bit about the plot (it was basically a bunch of non-related scenes
quickly edited up against one another), the clip didn't really do much for
me. One thing I do remember thinking is how the Terminator's black
leather jacket wasn't as cool as it used to be. It was too clean and
shiny. Kinda like that year that the Fonz got his new glossy leather
jacket and became "uncool" in my eyes, soon thereafter.
Anyway, there was also no sign of the Terminatrix in the footage, but
Stahl seemed to be conveying his "brooding" style across pretty
well, and Danes seemed...well, boring as usual. Overall, I can't say
that I was overwhelmed by the clips, but it didn't look as bad as I
thought it would either, although the last line left something to be desired
(actually, this was the only line in the entire trailer-- it was
basically set against some crankin' music). Arnold, in full T3 gear says, "Desire is irrelevant...I am a machine". I
don't know....I guess I'll have to wait and see more before I really get
a sense of this one.
A
Q&A was then opened to the floor and right off the bat, some a-hole
gets up and asks Mostow this question: "Are you gonna ruin this
franchise like somebody else ruined BATMAN?" (referring to Joel
Schumacher, of course). Arnold just sat up there with a "what the
fuck is going on around here?" look on his face (you're in the
world of geeks now, Arnold!), while Mostow took
the high road and simply replied with a "I am a big fan of this
franchise and I hope that I can make a worthy third chapter."
Arnold was then asked about CONAN 3, and said that he "hoped that
it would happen" but that it was not in his power. He said that a
script had been written by John Milius (who wrote the original CONAN THE BARBARIAN),
but that it was up to Warner Bros to give the film the greenlight or
not.
Jonathan
Mostow was then asked how he felt after he got the gig to head up T3, and
said that it was like "winning the lottery" and that it took
him a couple of weeks just to believe that he truly did get it. Arnold
was then asked which of his own films was his favorite, and other than
rambling around the answer for a while, he finally said that he didn't have any one
particular
favorite, because they were all "different joys" to make. He
did admit that both KINDERGARTEN COP and TWINS were the most
"fun" to make though, since he loved working with Danny DeVito
and that he could "smoke three stogies a day". He also said
that he loved making TOTAL RECALL and the TERMINATOR movies, and that he
also has "fun" when he sees the box-office results come in for
some of this bigger films. "That's fun too." He
admitted that his life was good and that "I hope that they just
write "joy" on my gravestone, because that's what I've had in
my life".
And what about DOC SAVAGE, Arnold...are you going
to do that movie? "Beats me", responded Arnold. "Frank Darabont
(THE GREEN MILE, THE SHAWSHANK
REDEMPTION) wrote the script and handed
it in to Warner Bros but the studio said that it would apparently cost
upwards of $200 million to make, so it's up to them at this point".
With that and mucho applause from the audience,
both men exited the premises but not before grand
politician-in-the-making Arnold Schwarzenegger returned one more time,
grabbed the mike and shouted "Asta la vista, fanboys!" to his
adoring audience. It's at that point that I realized that the man's
charm had pulled the wool right over my eyes during his short time on
stage, but then again...it's the man's charm that gets people in to see
his movies in the first place, so consider my sorry ass "sold" on the next
installment of his kickass career, and count me in for any votes if he
does end up running for office (yeah, yeah...I know I'm Canadian but I
can still vote, can't I?? Can't I??).
Asta la vista, indeed.

The Arrow and I went down to San Diego for yet another awesome COMIC
CONVENTION this year (check out our 2000 and
2001 reports respectively), and let me
tell you...there was a lot of shit going on and lots of cool and
surprising cameos. Starting Wednesday, each of the
panel coverages will go up, so check out what's to come below. And yes, the always popular
PHOTO GALLERY will be up on Friday.
The Hellboy
panel:
Writer/director Guillermo Del Toro, actor
Ron Perlman and writer/artist
Mike Mignola discuss the upcoming comic-to-film project, as Del Toro
sneaks a few dozen "fucks" in there before the panel's first 10
minutes is up.
The Bulletproof Monk
panel:
Actor Seann William Scott and
actress/babe Jamie King sit down and
discuss their collaboration on the upcoming THE BULLETPROOF MONK, which also
co-stars the very cool Chow Yun-Fat.
The House of the Dead
panel:
Writers Mark. A. Altman and Dave
Parker discuss the 2003 release of yet another video game
making its way to the big screen: THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD. And what's this
about a VAMPIRELLA movie? Stay tuned.
SONY/COLUMBIA
The XXX panel:
Actress/babe Asia Argento hops
on stage and tells us a little something about herself and her upcoming
movie with a certain Vin Diesel. Does Vin show up unexpectedly?? (only
in my dreams... ;)
The Tooth Fairy
panel:
Actress/babe Emma Caulfield
discusses her upcoming foray into genre flicks with TOOTH FAIRY, and the
Arrow takes a few moments to discuss the film with director Jonathan
Liebesman. Tooth-pulling ensues.
NEW LINE
The LOTR: The Two Towers
panel:
No footage was shown but we did get a couple of bits tossed our
way, as well as some cameos by Frodo, Pippin and Merry themselves (aka Elijah
Wood, Billy Boyd and Dominic
Monaghan).
WARNER BROS
The Ecks vs Sever
panel:
Actress/babe Lucy Lui sits next
to actor/Darth Maul Ray Park and
director Kaos (who explained the
origins of his name) to discuss their collaboration with the
man with the golden cock, Antonio Banderas, in a little something called
BALLISTIC: ECKS VS SEVER (and yes, it's also based on a video game).
The Dreamcatcher
panel:
Actor/all-around cool guy Jason Lee
and actor Timothy Olyphant get on
stage to field some questions about the film which they are presently
shooting, based on a Stephen King novel, entitled DREAMCATCHER, but are
instead pelted with questions about Kevin Smith movies and requests to
repeat cool quotes from said flicks.
The Terminator 3
surprise:
Unbeknownst to most, director Jonathan
Mostow was nice enough to drop by the Con, in order to show
off a few minutes of the highly anticipated sequel to the sequel of THE
TERMINATOR. Another "small" cameo dropped by to pay his props
to the fanboys, a gentleman by the name of Arnold
Schwarzenegger.
UNIVERSAL
The Hulk panel:
Director Ang Lee and producers Gale
Anne Hurd, Larry J. Franco
and Avi Arad stop by to show us some
stills of the 2003 release of THE HULK (that's right, no actual footage
or pics of the green monster...darn!) and answer some questions.
FOX
The Solaris
surprise:
Yet another big surprise came in writer/director/king of the world James
Cameron showing up for a quick Q&A about the upcoming
sci-fi flick SOLARIS (which he produced and Steven Soderbergh wrote and
directed), as well as a 4-minute clip from the actual movie, starring
George Clooney.
The X-Men 2
panel:
Director Bryan Singer was nice
enough to leave his Vancouver set of X2 and come down to Diego for some
questions from the audience and to show us the coolest 2-minute clip
that I saw all weekend. Wow!! The man apparently has only been shooting
from about 3-4 weeks, but from what we all saw of the clip...this movie
looks like a fuckin' slam-dunk!
The Daredevil
panel:
This was one of the biggest panels with writer/director Mark
Steven Johnson leading the pack, alongside DAREDEVIL himself,
Ben Affleck, as well as producer Avi
Arad, Gary Foster and
comic guru Joe Quesada. Yet another
exclusive clip was shown from the movie, and it will also be discussed.
