Sony is bringing one of their own properties to life (via lots and lots of CGI, no doubt), namely SHADOW OF THE COLOSSUS.

The popular Playstation 2 game (no relation to Marvel's metallic mutant) was set in a mythical world and involved a warrior engaging in combat with a series of gargantuan and occasionally infuriating boss creatures.

The script is being written by Justin Marks, the apparent sole survivor of Screenwriter Thunderdome judging by the fact that he's now doing almost every big project based on a property (including but not limited to 20,000 LEAGUES BENEATH THE SEA, HE-MAN, HACK/SLASH, VOLTRON, SUICIDE SQUAD, GREEN ARROW: SUPERMAX and the best-forgotten STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN-LI).

Source: THR

Extra Tidbit: The game's hero spent his whole quest trying to get Mono.

Ugh
I'd think this could be a really good idea if it weren't for the fact that Justin Marks is writing it. His script for Supermax is fucking ABYSMAL and I don't understand why it had so many internet bloggers cumming in their pants and made studios want to hire him for every property they get their hands on. It just doesn't make any sense.

LOVE THIS GAME
one of the best games ever and was hoping this would be adapted one day. But still, lots of CGI means they'll need to make up the money they lose making it. Which means PG-13 rating, which means won't be as good as it can be. And you can't have all 16 collossi in the movie either. Don't get your hopes up that they'll somehow 'get it right'. Ben Fritz from one of Variety's Blogs had this to say:
"I understand the folks working on the project are planning to have some of the characters who appear only momentarily in the game, such as those who try to track down and stop Wander, play bigger roles in the film. And despite the game's somewhat "artsy" cred, they're hop...

Really don't understand what's so difficult about just leaving existing stories the way they are when making a movie translation. There's a reason people liked them the 1st time and it WASN'T because of any 'creative input' coming from Hollywood.

This has every reason to be a extremely good movie.
But they will fuck it up beyond recognition.

interesting idea for an adaptation. a suitably artistic director could do something amazing with this, but the big twist at the end (as I recall) would mean fans of the game wouldn't have much to gain by watching it as a movie. For people none the wiser, though, it could be quite a cool experience.

I'm pleased with the optimism on this. I'm less optimistic because Conan was 20 years ago and Wall-E was not made by Sony.

I'm not ready to say this will fail, but I have major doubts. One of the reasons this story works so well on a video game is because the language spoken is not English. It adds reality and that extra layer of being alone.

I really hope this do...

I really hope this doesn't get made. But I hope even more that this turns into a master piece. No English, no other characters and most importantly, to keep the poetry of the game.

Okay...
I love SotC. The gameplay is very cinematic. It really is its own movie. I think it could work as a live-action movie too. Some of you said it couldn't work because there's almost no story or dialog, but if you recall the Conan movies they had very little dialog. The plot was simple, yet epic and powerful. I think SotC can be approached with the same sensibilities. The reason I'm...

hmmm.
Yeah, I mean, the game was amazing. It had a highly emotional story, but it was designed as a game, not a movie. So the emotional moments were made so because it was you doing the things that made you sad. Watching it on film is just going to look fucked up. Also, its going to be mad boring. There is little to no dialogue in this game.

there is one main reason this probably wont turn out to be all that good ..... there is no way i can see the people behind the film leaving it that, besides the dead chick and a disembodied voice, the only main characters are 1 guy and his horse. unless they let the horse talk, they are going to throw in a sidekick in there somewhere. i mean i havent played the game in a while, but irc, it is j...

The movie should just focus on the amazing visuals, giant monsters, a man who climbs them and stabs them in the brain, and the story of how far a man would go to save the one he loves. This movie has great potential to be a masterpiece (much like the game), but only if they decide to make the movie as original and innovative as the game.

I'd much rather have a follow up SOC2 game for the PS3 than a big screen version.

That, or Mono.

Puke. There's no true way I can see this adapted to film. Craptastic writer to start with. Bioshock and Gears of War are more adaptable than this game.

And LOL at the extra tidbit.
