Brace yourselves, people, DreamWorks is done with the SHREK franchise. Take a second to let that one sink in. No more ogres with perplexing Scottish brogues going on adventures that jam pack as much pop culture references as possible. Of course, they're not throwing in the towel until after the fifth installment. We still have two more pop culture filled ogre adventures to come! Yay! According to DreamWorks spokesman Rich Sullivan, "The story itself has five chapters. Based on the success of the first three films, at the very least, the next one, 'Shrek 4,' is warranted." Really, because it seems like the story only had one chapter that made a buttload of money so you added another chapter and that made a shit-ton of money so you added another chapter and so forth. Who knows why their choosing to let go of this insane cash cow after the fifth installment when they could clearly be pumping these bad boys out until the end of time but I guess they are. Or maybe they're not. Maybe they're just saying they are to make even more money. Whoa, those evil geniuses!
Extra Tidbit:
The fourth SHREK is slated for a 2010 release.

PIXAR VS DREAMWORKS
Pixar - Constantly creating original, critically applauded movies. Taking serious consideration before making a sequel. Genuinely in love with the magic of filmmaking and not profit-orientated (see Lasseter's cancellation of direct-to-DVD Disney titles and his reworking on the Tinkerbell film)
Dreamworks - Churning out utterly vacuous, market-research driven 'films' (hey, kids like penguins!) and glossing over their mediocrity with a selection of the latest Hollywood voices.
The Shrek franchise has landed them enough money to invest into creating whatever they can conceive, they could bring in some of the greatest talent available and make a completely original amazing film. Instead they choose to put a MINIMUM amount of cash into a film (I'd like to see how much of their film's budget goes to voice-talent and how much to production) to ensure the greatest amount of profit.
Disgusting. |

OMAR, SAVE THIS ARTICLE...
Because in 2010, I'm predicting you'll be writing the same thing, only change being that you'll bump the numbers up by one. I say this because I could have sworn they said 4 would be the last one, but since these movies make over $200 million domestically, they'll keep pumping them out. |

Gotta love how people were big fans of this series, hated one sequel, and now bash it like crazy. I am up for another one, but if it is as bad 3, I won't watch the 5th. |

While I'm ebullient at the very idea of this terrible franchise ever coming to a close (I was seriously starting to convince myself that Shrek films would be marauding theaters when I'm 70), I'm still annoyed that DreamWorks feels the needs to suck the teat of the ogre long past dry and into some kind of strange strand of sudo-necrophiliac cannibalism.
Enough was enough at the end of the brainwrenching second installment.
Five? Really DreamWorks? Really? |

The first one was tolerable but this is ridiculous. I used to love Mike Meyers but he has got to be the biggest sell out in Hollywood. |
