Sommers on Tarzan Sep. 2, 2008

by: Dave Davis

How do you go from Guillermo del Toro to the guy who pummeled the collective scrotum of cinema with VAN HELSING?

That's the question you might ask when you learn that director and MUMMY resurrector Stephen Sommers is swinging into the chair for a big-screen TARZAN movie for Warner Bros. (del Toro was eyeballing the project a couple years back).

At least A-list screenwriter Stuart Beattie (COLLATERAL, AUSTRALIA) is working on the script -- they recently teamed to humanize action figures with G.I. JOE: RISE OF COBRA.

The famous creation of author Edgar Rice Burroughs, a jungle-raised savage brought to civilization only to reject it in favor of vine-swinging and babes in leopard skin, has already appeared in about 100 movies and TV shows. Could it be yet another future franchise for... Hugh Jackman?

Extra Tidbit: How much Keeffe was there in the 1981 Bo Derek romp TARZAN THE APE MAN?

People just have different tastes, some people think certain directors are geniuses while others think they're overrated. Orson Welles, Stanley Kuberick and Alfred Hitchcock all faced the same problem in their day. As for del Toro I think a lot of the appeal is that he's able to mix poweful drama and realistic characterization with a very distinct visual style. He also writes all of his films, which instantly gives him a lot more respect in some people's eyes than someone like Fuqua who merely directs from somebody else's script (not that Fuqua's a bad director). Also, you probably have seen all of del Toro's *American* films, he did several films in his native Mexico before moving to the states, and those (along with Pan's Labyrinth) are the ones that most people truly admire.

Can someone please tell me why is Guillermo Del Toro so great? I've seen all of his movies and to me he doesn't seem to be a better director than someone like Antoine Fuqua. I don't get the hype.

I'm hip to this news for three reasons:

1--It's good that there's finally going to be something to eclipse the memory of those atrocious Disney rapings of such a classic character.

2--I think Steven Sommers is a good director, and that VAN HELSING mostly suffered from a terrible script.

3--It's a new Tarzan movie! Yay!

True, it sucks that Guillermo del Toro won't be doing it, but you know what? I'm far more anxious to see his take on AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS than THE HOBBIT, or even HELLBOY III, let alone this.

My only problem...my ONLY problem, and this has been a problem since 1948, is that Johnny Weissmuller isn't going to be Tarzan. He IS Tarzan, period.

I wouldn't say Tarzan is an impossible character to cast. Christopher Lambert did a pretty damn good job in the 1984 movie Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan, Lord of the Apes. Not saying that he should reprise the role, but if they can do it once, they can do it again.

WELL...
A good screenwriter can go a long way, and Beattie is pretty awesome. I figure I'll hold of judgement until we see how good/bad G.I. Joe is. Although either way you look at it, this is a step down from del Toro (although I'd much rather get an awesome hobbit film and sub-par Tarzan than the other way around).

As far as casting goes, yeah thembones is right, you can never please everyone but you can please *almost* everyone (I'm sure somebody somewhere thinks RDJ was a baf pick for Iron Man, but you know that 99.973% of the fans thought he was perfect)

ROYALLY BAD IDEA
First of all, Tarzan is an enigma much like Superman and Batman. An impossible character to cast. You'll never please all of the people and what you end up settling with is someone who fits the part instead of being perfect for the part which there isn't in this of the aforementioned characters. There have been so many bad Tarzan movies and this will only be one more to add to the list. C'mon Hollywood, focus more on feasible franchises or even paletable new ones.

Can they really top Tarzan The Ape Man with Miles O'Keefe and Bo Derrick? I mean she was a 10. I mean I could understand them remaking King Kong and Godzilla, but ask yourself, can you touch the greatness of Tarzan The Ape Man? I think not!!!

I just hope this can live up to the masterpiece that is The Mummy Returns. I haven't seen an action sequence as thrilling as the rocket-powered blimp in a long time.
