Sony takes Risk Nov. 4, 2009

The amazing world of movie ideas takes another one from Hasbro, the game of RISK.

Sony has acquired the movie rights to RISK, the game where one must dominate the world. The film will be produced and developed by Hasbro’s Brian Goldner, Bennett Schneir and Overbrook Entertainment's James Lassiter. Lassiter has produced several Will Smith movies like I, ROBOT, SEVEN POUNDS, and is also doing work with Smith's son Jayden on KUNG FU KID.

Sony president Doug Belgrad is looking to films like GI JOE and TRANSFORMERS saying that the audience has, "Shown a great desire for films that bring to life everything that has made these franchise properties stand the test of time. The strategic thinking and the tactical gambles that players must take in the game are what make RISK a classic, thoroughly engaging game. Those elements translated into an action-packed, thrilling story are what will make this a uniquely exciting movie.”

I love playing Risk, even though I really suck at it and I'm pretty sure everytime we play it, we're playing it wrong. As far as Risk becoming a movie, it seems pretty average. There's not much of a story that comes with the board game. They didn't have to secure the rights to Risk to make a movie about world domination, but I suppose having a well known name on it helps. Maybe they'll get something out of it, but it won't be as good as CLUE.

Extra Tidbit: Risk was invented in 1957 by French filmmaker Albert Lamorisse as La Conquête du Monde (The Conquest of the World).

I'd like to see them make one based on Risk 2210 A.D. Of all the risk versions, that is the best =)

Yeah, Risk is the shit. And since the game doesn't have much of a story, it will be interesting to see where they go with this. I could actually see it turning out really f*cking good.

Risk is one of the greatest board game ever. This can only translate to being the greatest film ever as well.

Not a horrible idea actually. Out of all the board games to adapt, Risk actually makes the most sense. A movie about global domination and World War? I'd watch that, if handled correctly (I may be biased because Risk ...

I think if they made it like an epic type movie where they showed the different generals essentially playing the game in their HQ and the Troops doing it, i think that could be fun... Don't focus on a love story, no personal character stories a la GI Joe (Which I thought was fun anyways BTW...), just some good hardcore early 1800's war... I'm Down...
