Souza on StreetFighter Oct. 7, 2008

Steven E. de Souza, the director of the original STREET FIGHTER movie/travesty has been talking to MTV about the upcoming reboot-ish movie, STREET FIGHTER: THE LEGEND OF CHUN LI. Surprise: he thinks it will probably be better than the one he made:

“I heard that it’s the story of just Chun-Li... That has to make for a better picture.”

"When we were making the original one, they insisted that all of the characters be in the movie... And if you do the math, that gives you about 7 minutes per character if you split it up equally.”

Let's be honest. You could film Van Damme and Ming-Na spiking the skulls of orphans over a beach volleyball net like freaking Maverick and Goose and still make a better STREET FIGHTER movie. Nice to hear him being so candid though.

Extra Tidbit: My interview with Justin Marks, the dude who wrote the upcoming STREET FIGHTER flick, HERE.

it shouldnt actually be too hard to do a good street fighter movie. there are 2 ways to go about it. one would be to just have a like a fighting tournament kind like how it is in the game and just show off the cool characters, we dont need to know there damn history. the other way would be to use the basic premise of the story that does exist behind the game, Bison is a bad guy, blah blah blah, group of collected fighters, blah blah, they fight and defeat him and his minions. or they could focus on one character and use their story line, which they are doing to the new one, ( only in the new movie, they pick a character that had the simplest story::he killed my father, must get revenge by entering tournament:: and changed it to whatever the hell they wanted to). i am sure that most people would have wanted the story to focus on Ken and Ryu, if only because it is through them that most of the story gets fleshed out anyway. personally, it dont really matter, the animated films kick ass, and the whole story behind Ryu is better served as an animation anyway.

De Souza's "Street Fighter" was an amusing, goofy, utterly non-serious, cartoony movie with ridiculous characters - i.e. it was exactly the way that the game was. It's still the only game-based movie that manages to be funny for a period longer than 2 seconds. The cretins who hate it are most likely closet fans of Paul WS Anderson.

I just hope like fuck that they don't try to release another "Street Fighter: The Movie: The Game" with this flick.

I mean really, does anybody remember how excruciating the original was?

what in the hell is so hard about focusing on the main charactors ryu and ken? and that stuff about insisting all the character being in the movie is garbage look at the animated movie it was fantastic and it might of had even more charactoer than the live action did.

i hope this is better than jvds street fighter movie.

OH DEAR...
News flash: Video games are NOT good source material for movies. The first STREET FIGHTER sucked, and I have no doubt this one will be equally terrible.

With a movie based on a game like this, the problem lies in tacking on a story that obviously doesn't need to be there. It'd be like making a Sonic the Hedgehog movie and having the lead character as a freedom fighter that crosses over into our world to stop a gang of jewel thieves that have stolen his rings... or something. The concept of Streetfighter is simple, people join a martial arts competition and kick the holy hell out of each other. Why is that so hard to do? It's been done in countless movies and with the colourful cast of characters you have for SF you can't go wrong. Think of it like a cross between Enter the Dragon and Bloodsport. Winner.

WOW
Even the original director thinks it's better than the one he made. That doesn't really say anything. Considering the original is only good to watch when you're drunk or high if only to comment how Van Damme was the shit.
