UPDATE: Sony told Coming Soon that "there is no truth to the rumor that the studio is looking to replace Tobey Maguire in the role of Peter Parker/Spider-Man in future "Spider-Man" movies." That's the official statement... but that doesn't mean they aren't discussing it behind the scenes, especially since nobody is under contract to return.

This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who noted the general lack of commitment -- or enthusiasm -- from the SPIDER-MAN principals when asked about returning for a fourth movie (even less surprising given the response to SPIDER-MAN 3), but rumors are circulating that Sony is actively seeking a different young actor to wear the webs in the planned (and possibly back-to-back) sequels.

Latino Review claims that the producers are tossing around names for potential consideration as a new Peter Parker, and that Patrick Fugit (ALMOST FAMOUS) and Michael Anganaro (SKY HIGH, THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM) are on their "maybe" list.

Then again, CHUD found out from the producers of Fugit's current project CIRQUE DU FREAK that the actor didn't know anything about it, and wisely point out that the people behind SPIDER-MAN 4 (& 5) are probably just simply putting together a giant list of (cost-effective) young actors who sorta-kinda resemble Peter Parker and who could be candidates, should the production go in a recasting direction.

The cynic in me would take that a step further and posit that someone involved in the SPIDEY camp floated those names to Latino Review to gauge the fan response online (it wouldn't be the first time). Either way, signs seem to point to Sony forging ahead with webhead but without the team behind the initial trilogy (the studio, who still retains control of the character, currently has writer Jamie Vanderbilt working on the new script(s)). I certainly don't have an issue with some fresh blood (actors AND director), particularly after suffering through the third movie...

Extra Tidbit: Since we're throwing names around for a new Peter, I'll suggest Charlie Cox, who showed in STARDUST that he can do both awkward and heroic.

Jake Gyllenhaal should do this. He'd be perfect! He's got it in him. And heck bring Fincher in to direct. He's already got his Zodiac scribe penning a screenplay. That film would be slick!!

To throw another idea out I think Ryan Reynolds could play a good older Spidey, if they went with that angle. Spidey as the older 30 something superhero who's married to MJ already and he's been web swinging for a while now. He could totally play the sarcasm up and the action. Not to mention he is the most chiseled guy in Hollywood. But I say this out of pure fun due to the fact that is is dest...

Fugit & Angarano are both horrible choices. Fugit is too dry and the audience will not be able to take him serious in the role. He's great in films like Almost Famous or Saved but he's no Spidey. I'd be more for keeping Tobey in there than Fugit (and I don't like Tobey for Spider-Man) The role calls for someone who can play up the sarcasm, the awkward dorkyness and the bad ass hero aspects all ...

Sturgess for Spidey! Watch 21...he does a great job transforming from the dork to the confident guy and yet he still shows a vulnerability. Plus, he just has the Parker look. Check out his imdb photos. I think he would have great chemistry with Amy Adams as MJ as well (who wouldn't though?) Lets just hope they don't do some typical Hollywood casting and go with like Josh Hartnett or Orlando Bloom.

I don't know if anybody's pointed this out yet, but ironically, Angarano and Fugit both played the same character in Almost Famous (Angarano was the 11-year-old William Miller). I will say that Angarano does have the baby-faced optimism/fighting skills necessary for Peter Parker, but he's a LOT younger than Tobey Maguire.

I hear rumors of Jim Sturgess playing Spidey in the broadway musical (directed by Julie Taymor, who directed Sturgess in Across the Universe) I think he's perfect for both Parker & Spidey for the film as well. Add Amy Adams to that mix for MJ, keep JK Simmons for Jonah Jameson and that is one bad ass reboot (in my opinion). Maybe Vin Diesel for Venom as well...he's got the bulk and the voice, a...

After the SpiderMan 3 debacle, they should wait a good 10 years and reboot the franchise in the same way Warner Bros. rebooted Batman. Another Spiderman will just further prove how Marvel and Sony are out to just make a quick buck with another crap set of sequels.

I think they should leave it for a while, they tried to do too much in the last one and Venom was crap. I personally could do without a Spiderman movie for at least another 5 years

I'm in the minority who thinks they shouldn't 'REBOOT' the series and should carry on as before , just improve after the blipp that was part 3.
But if they DO intend to recast; well I think Jake G is too Buff nowadays to carry off 'nerdy' so my vote is...SHIA LEBEOUF!! he could do the nerd-ness AND carry off the wisecracks

I've been a big fan of the j. michael straczynski series for sometime. I own the OMD (One More Day)arc and the first arc of BND (Brand New Day), and after reading all of them I actually want to see Topher Grace as Spider-Man. I want more films. But I want them done right. And the most important thing in doing it right is having a decent story to tell. If its strong enough then perhaps the former cast and crew will return. If it's shit, go ahead and give it to someone else. Would it matter at that point?

I'm worried.

Spidey 3 was, IMHO, derailed by all of the producers who micromanaged Raimi to death (and who forced Raimi to shoehorn in Venom's ENTIRE storyline AFTER production had already started).

And now Raimi's gone...and those same producers are continuing the franchise?

Hey, good pick with Charlie Cox. I liked Stardust a lot, and he's only 25 which is about the age Tobey was when he first donned those tights. I know he's supposed to be a college kid, but I still have trouble seeing these Hollywood actors playing a superhero a few months after playing a 15 year old, so I tend to prefer they cast a little older.

I'm definitely supportive of changing things up a bit (though I admittedly would enjoy seeing Maguire suit up once more), but neither selection really jives with my image of Spidey.

Still think Gyllenhaal is probably the best choice out there--though I do like the idea of Levitt taking over. Don't know if that will happen, but it would be great it materialized.

The hardest part will be finding a good spidy and directer. I hope they keep Raimi on as a producer. Love the idea of Gordon-Levitt as Spidy, but with his role in GIJoe i dont think it will happen. But bring on the spidy! the more the better!

I am ready for more Spiderman. If it means replacing a few actors, I am fine with it as long as the movie is good. The third one was far from good, and maybe it is time for some fresh, new blood.
