Spielberg/Smith Oldboy

by: Dave Davis Nov. 6, 2008

Director Justin Lin (FAST AND THE FURIOUS: TOKYO DRIFT) was long attached to a remake of Korean director Park Chan-Wook's deservedly acclaimed OLDBOY, but either wasn't up to the challenge or simply decided it wasn't a good idea.

Steven Spielberg doesn't feel the same. Nor, it seems, does Will Smith.

The duo has apparently wanted to collaborate on something, and are now in early discussions to make that something a remake of OLDBOY (with Universal and the recently liberated Dreamworks), a dizzying and brutal revenge tale about a man seeking payback when he's released from a mysterious 15-year captivity.

Spielberg obviously knows how to get serious and grim (MUNICH, SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, SCHINDLER'S LIST), and Smith can certainly act, but he can also end up in flash trash (oh how I loathed you, HANCOCK). So he'll definitely need to bring his A-game for the role of the hammer-wielding prisoner portrayed so consummately by Korean star Choi Min-sik.

Source: Variety

Extra Tidbit: Nic Cage once publicly stated interest in the role, though I always thought Gary Oldman would be a fine choice if a remake has to be made. Which, of course, it doesn't. Does it?

fucking don't do that. NO NEED FOR ANOTHER LAME ASS REMAKE (do you relly think they will have the balls to keep the tone as dark as the original?).And if Will Smith can be fuckin' good (Six degrees of separation, The legend of Bagger Vance, you know, when he tries to act in a subtle way), but there's NO WAY he could reach the awesomeness of Choi Min-si(c)k breathtaking performence. Next!

i'd like to see them give it a try. that movie has a pretty brutal twist ending, which i don't think they could change because it pretty much IS the movie. i can't see a hollywood studio making this work, but i'd love to see them try.

I don't really see them remaking Oldboy - not properly anyway. The original's pretty amazing in an insane kind of way, and I just don't see how a Hollywood version could be anything other than watered down and just sharing a few plot points. Could still be a good film, but it won't be Oldboy.

A good story will make a good movie. Oldboy has a whopper of a story. Just give Spielberg and Smith a shot at it. Since when has a remake ruined an original, honestly? Only if you're too stubborn and mad at Hollywood for trying to make money--which is what it does, it's Hollywood, baby! You mean to tell me that you can't go back to the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre because the 2003 remake took a cinematic dump all over it? Get real!

Yes, there are a few seriously questionable pros and cons for this. But damn, if I can't wait to see how Janusz Kaminski can rival the beautiful photography of the original.

There is simply nothing Spielberg could do to make this worth it. We'll just be left we a side-by-side comparison between a has-been Hollywood money grabber and a humble Korean master of style. Surely he's only going to embarrass American cinema? Please, we really don’t deserve this.

And if Will Smith doesn’t eat a live octopus he can just leave right now.

What made the original special was the greek tragedy aspect of it, the acting and the visual impact of the film. I have faith that Speilberg could pull it off if he embraces the core of what made the original special.

I think Will Smith can act his butt off if he wants to and this might be the vehicle for him to do it in. He is older than his recent roles have him playing. I think they would have to dump the incest angle to make this work for a wide audience. What matters is the mind-shattering act of self-betrayal the character is lured into. What this needs is a really good script.

I have no interest in seeing a remake of Oldboy no matter who is behind it. The problem with remakes is that they try to up the ante or lessen it due to the subject matter.

Oldboy is a great movie and does not need to be remade.

I can already see the ending in my head
Will Smith opens a box to find a picture album inside.

He ruffles, through the baby pictures of his daughter.

As he reaches the end, he see the picture of the girl he had sex with.

then he realizes what just happened, and screams:

"Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwww HELL NAWWWWW!!!!"

I'm excited for this. This news is getting a similar response to the Internal Affairs remake news, and look at how The Departed turned out. You can trust Spielberg will do a good job, just like you could have trusted Scorsese to do a good job. I don't care how great the original was. I saw both Internal Affairs and Oldboy, and they both got way overhyped. This for sure will be good.

P.S. Will Smith is a good actor. Just watch Ali and Pursuit of Hapyness. The fact that he does popcorn movies doesn't make a him a bad actor. You all geeked out on Downey Jr. and this site has called one of our greatest actors numerous times, but his performance in Ironman was no differente than how Will Smith performs in his blockbuster movies. Those are not the best way to gauge someone's acting skills.

But if you have to remake it, I agree with others in that it better keep the original, shocking ending (or something even more shocking).

Don't really know what to say on this one. Will Smith and Spielberg have to be the oddest choices for this. Specially Smith. Nothing against the guy, but this is just not really his kind of role. It'd be like Vin Diesel doing a musical.

But I'm not upset, because I'm one of the few who didn't like Oldboy...at all. So for me it can only improve.

Hmmm..Spielberg and Will Smith? How could that end being anything but a pointless, watered-down piece of crap? Are they going to add friendly aliens to the story? Is Smith going to take on hoards of bad-CGI robots or vampires?

I usually trust Spielberg, and think while he may not be the first man I'd think to take this on, he'll know what to do. Basically, I hope this thing is more in the vein of "Munich" and "Minority Report." As for Smith, well, sure there are actors one might more readily think of to portray the hero(?), but Smith is a fine actor.

I'm almost ready to point out how a director no less than Martin Scorsese remade an Asian modern classic into a Best Picture winner. But then the difference between "Infernal Affairs" and "Oldboy" is pretty vast.

So, yeah. While I trust Spielberg, I don't think it's a good idea.

Now, if anyone wanted to remake either 'Sympathy...' films, I... well, if I say, it could be used against me in a court of law.

I wasn't as absolutely blown away by the original as many people were, but it was a solid little film and I could tell just by the headline that this was going to make a lot of people very angry. Spielberg is still getting a lot of hate from people over Indy IV, and rightfully so, but I think that's clouding a lot of people's opinion of him. The fact is he's on of the best directors working today. Sure, you probably hated Indy and you might not have liked War of the Worlds either but just a few years ago he gave us Munch, and to me the director of Munich is the kind of person I'd want to do this if a remake is inevitable.*

As for Smith, he's definitely not my first choice for the role. Or my second. Or even my third. In fact he's probably around #31 on my list right in between Jim Carey and Vin Diesel. It certainly seems, though, that Smith's making a conscious effort to take on more mature roles and shake his former image, which is commendable. However, perhaps he should try taking things a little more slowly.

*I agree whole-heartedly with writer19 on this one, Cronenberg would be absolutely perfect for this project. However Spielberg is a more than adequate second choice and I have no problem with his involvement.

Do not fucking butcher its plot and tarnish it's name with a mediocre, money grabbing remake. Please no....

If they like the movie, they can spend their fucking millions and get it a theatrical distribution deal across the USA so it can get the acclaim it deserves. Do not fucking butcher its plot and tarnish it's name with a mediocre, money grabbing remake. Please no....

Now this is the story all about how
My life got flip turned upside down
So I'd like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I'll tell you how I became
Imprisoned in a hotel room, escaped, sought revenge on my captors, fought off bad guys with a hammer, and unraveled a complex grudge dating back to my days as a schoolboy.

?

No. No. NO!! I like Smith, I like Spielberg, not so much the idea of remaking Oldboy. Nobody's gonna be able to top the original, regardless of who it is.

really?
the first was a good date but it didnt put out for me, except for the hallway fight scene. but i respect that it has a loyal following. wishin spielberg would be totally original and make his own revenge flick. plus the whole incest thing i dont think will transfer well to the american audience as a whole.
nice pic

Stupid
I love "Oldboy" more than can be put into words. It's much grittier than Smith and Spielberg can do justice. Sure he's gotten grim, but never that gritty. I say just give "Oldboy" a theatrical run (did it get one originally?). Awful, awful idea.

Oldboy is a top 10 film for me, Spielberg is my favorite director...I worship Will Smith being born in Philly.

But still...I don't know, I would be more excited for a David Fincher...or for...ya know, NOT re-making it at all is always a good option.

Ah, Hell nah!
Why doesn't Spielberg make "Lincoln" or "Chicago 7" (which I guess is now being done by Greengrass) or something we actually haven't already seen. I love Spielberg, but nothing can top Chan-Wook's original and anybody that thinks so is crazy.
